Chapter 20 Saved a Woman

Wei Jingzhuo wasn't far from Su Wan, and ever since she left, he had been keeping a close eye on what was happening there.

Seeing the man blocking her way, he called Lin Qingfeng over: "Go and bring Madam back."

Lin Qingfeng bowed and walked toward the man with his sword in hand.

Su Wan looked at the couple in front of her and took a step back.

“If you want to sell me,” she looked behind her, “you should at least ask my man’s opinion first, right?”

Wei Jingzhuo leaned against the carriage, watching her. Guard Lin Qingfeng was walking towards them.

She felt safe, smiled, and waved to him.

Wei Jingzhuo coughed lightly with his fist to his lips, nodded to her, and then got into the carriage.

Being married is really great; I'm no longer all alone.

"Trying to scare me? You really think I'm easily frightened? I've seen this kind of trick a million times. Let's go!" The man thought Su Wan had just pointed to some random passerby and reached out to grab Su Wan's arm.

"Insolence!" Lin Qingfeng arrived in front of him, raised his long sword and pointed it at the man's chest. "If you dare to touch a single hair on my lady's head, I'll cut off your finger."

The man saw the gleaming sword right in front of him and was so frightened that he quickly withdrew his hand.

Lin Qingfeng put down his sword, and Su Wan bowed respectfully, saying, "Madam, the master has ordered me to take you back."

The man was surprised that Su Wan's words were true, and the sword-wielding guard even had a respectful expression, suggesting he came from a family of high status. Ordinary families couldn't afford to hire guards.

He immediately changed his expression and said with a fawning smile, "I've blocked your way, madam. I'll be leaving now."

After saying that, he grabbed the woman and tried to leave.

The woman refused to leave, clinging to Su Wan like a drowning man grasping at a straw, crying out, "Madam, please save me! I'll do anything for you..."

Enraged, the man slapped the woman hard across the face, knocking her to the ground.

Su Wan was about to leave when she stopped and looked back.

The woman lay on the ground, silent for a long time. She seemed to have given up struggling, like a lifeless rag doll, letting the man drag her away, leaving a long drag mark on the ground.

As the man walked away, he said in a rough voice, "If I had known that a beating would make you obedient, I should have used a whip to teach you a lesson!"

Su Wan's gaze turned cold. She strode back and blocked the man's path. "When did I say you could leave?"

She wasn't usually one to meddle in other people's business. But she couldn't stand seeing a man hit a woman.

The man glanced at Lin Qingfeng standing beside her and said with a fawning smile, "Madam, this is my wife. She always likes to throw tantrums and won't behave unless I discipline her. Is it alright for me to hit my own wife?"

Su Wan ignored him completely and instead knelt down in front of the woman: "Who is he to you?"

The woman first looked at her, then at the man, and didn't say anything, just kept shaking her head, seemingly very scared.

Su Wan could tell that the woman was probably terrified of the man and didn't dare to tell the truth. She gently comforted her, "Tell me the truth, and I'll stand up for you."

The woman's gaze had been blank, but after hearing Su Wan's words, her eyes suddenly lit up, and she looked up at Su Wan.

Su Wan gave her a reassuring look.

The woman gritted her teeth and scrambled to her feet. She ran quickly behind Su Wan and said, "My mother sold me for three taels of silver to be his wife... I didn't want to, so I ran away... The indenture is still with him."

This woman's experience was similar to Su Wan's, which made Su Wan feel a sense of kinship.

She said to the man, "Take out the contract of indenture."

The man pulled a contract from his pocket and waved it in his hand, saying, "That's right, I did buy Dalan for three taels of silver. Madam, you'd better mind your own business. Even if you take this to the county magistrate, he can't interfere in my family's affairs."

Su Wan glanced at him and said, "Since I was forced to marry you, this marriage doesn't count."

“I gave all the money to her mother, how can it not count? Do you think three taels of silver grows on trees?” The man pointed at the woman behind Su Wan, “Da Lan, you come back right now, or I’ll break your legs.”

"I'm not going back!" Da Lan hid behind Su Wan. "I'd rather die than live with you."

Su Wan said to the man, "You heard it too, she doesn't want to be with you. I'll give you three taels of silver, you tear up the contract of servitude, and you can part ways amicably."

She could forcibly take Da Lan away, but this man has Da Lan's indenture, and if she goes to the authorities, Da Lan will eventually be arrested and taken back.

She had already swindled more than two taels of silver from the assassin disguised as a doctor. With a little more money, she could save a poor woman from her predicament. She felt it was worth it.

The man said, "I don't want money. She's my wife, and she has to carry on my family line. Dalan, come back with me!"

Relying on his indenture, he rushed forward and tried to grab Da Lan.

How could Su Wan let him succeed? She grabbed Da Lan and ran back.

Seeing that the man intended to force himself on him, Lin Qingfeng drew his longsword. Unexpectedly, someone was faster than him; an arrow flew in and pierced the man's arm.

The man screamed in agony, clutching his arm, and the contract of indenture fell to the ground.

Wei Jingzhuo rode up to them on his donkey, glanced coldly at the man rolling around on the ground, and said in an icy voice, "Qingfeng, take care of this man."

Su Wan turned around and saw Wei Jingzhuo, somewhat surprised, "Why are you here?"

He still has injuries and can't move around easily.
