Chapter 203 The Scheme Inside the Car

As dawn broke in the east, the previously dark road ahead began to become clear.

Su Wan replaced the charcoal in the brazier with new charcoal, poured the burnt charcoal out of the car, closed the car door, turned around and squatted down, saying, "Why has it gotten so cold these past few days? Has a cold front arrived?"

I was so nervous when I was planning to rescue Su Yuze that I didn’t notice how cold it was. Now I truly understand what it means to be icy cold.

Holding a hand warmer, Su Yuze asked, "Sister, what is a cold wave? Why didn't the teacher teach us that?"

"A cold front is a very cold air mass that has arrived here, and it's estimated that it will last for a while." Su Wan used the iron rod in her hand to scrape a sweet potato that had been roasting on the edge of the charcoal brazier.

The sweet potato rolled onto the floor, its aroma filling the entire carriage with a warm, comforting fragrance. She quickly pressed the hot skin of the sweet potato with her fingers; it was ready to eat.

"Sister-in-law, that's the handle of my hammer..."

Meng Ruliu sat listlessly in her seat, hugging her knees, a stark contrast to her usual energetic self.

Chu Yi cleaved her hammer in two, leaving only the handle. Reluctant to discard it, she picked up the hammerhead and carried it back to the car. As for the handle, Su Wan used it to roast sweet potatoes.

Su Wan put down the hammer handle, picked up the sweet potato, quickly tossed it between her hands, blew on it twice, and laughed, "Sister Yi, let's make the most of it!"

Meng Ruliu touched the bandage on her neck: "My father was also defeated, and his fate is unknown. The Southern Chu army is about to attack Xiping Pass. Does my sworn sister really want to go back?"

Su Wan didn't answer. She drew back the curtains, held the roasted sweet potato out the window, and said, "Guard Lin, roasted sweet potato."

"Mistress, I don't need to eat."

"Take it quickly, my hands are cold!"

Su Wan gave the roasted sweet potato to Lin Qingfeng, then lowered the cotton curtain to seal the gap, and squatted down to pick at another one.

Su Yuze said, "Sister, Sister Meng is asking you a question. The teacher said that it is impolite not to answer other people's questions."

Su Wan picked out a small sweet potato, quickly peeled it, put it in a small bowl, and handed it to Su Yuze, feigning annoyance, "You're almost becoming a bookworm at the academy. Eat something, you've just recovered from your illness, you need to replenish your strength."

Su Yuze stuck out his tongue, took the small bowl, and went to eat.

Children are children after all; they can't understand how difficult the current situation is.

Seeing her busy, Meng Ruliu simply bent down and picked up a roasted sweet potato herself, turning it back and forth in her hand: "Sister-in-law, that Chu Yi..."

"Sister Yi, this isn't cooked yet." Su Wan snatched it away and put it back by the charcoal brazier, pressing it with her finger; the outer skin wasn't soft yet.

Meng Ruliu blushed slightly. She had never baked anything herself; the servants always baked it and brought it to her to eat.

Su Wan pressed each one in turn, then looked up and said, "Brother Chu isn't a bad person, so don't hate him."

Meng Ruliu nodded: "I don't hate him. He could have killed me when he took the scimitar. It's just that he's too strong. I'm worried about Your Highness."

“I’m worried too,” Su Wan said. “This trip to Xiping Pass was to persuade A Jin to escape. Given Brother Chu’s personality, he won’t kill them all. General Meng should be fine, so you don’t need to worry, sworn sister.”

Having dealt with Chu Yi extensively, and considering the recent incident with Su Yuze, she now knew that Chu Yi wasn't the ruthless type. Although Meng Kuan had been defeated, she judged that Chu Yi would never kill him. She planned to check on Meng Kuan's return to Xiping Pass to see if he had escaped.

"He didn't kill them all, but what about Bai Zhiyi?" Meng Ruliu asked. "She used to be the most beautiful woman in the capital, surrounded by noble ladies and adored by countless men wherever she went. Now that her face is ruined... she seems to hate you a lot?"

"Who knows what illness she has? What does it have to do with me?" Su Wan didn't want to mention Bai Zhiyi. "That seventh brother said Bai Zhiyi is in Shangjing. Let's hurry to Xiping Pass, take A Jin with us, and you should bring your family too."

"Then where to go?" Meng Ruliu asked. "If Your Highness fails, we'll have nowhere to go."

Su Wan was peeling sweet potatoes when she heard this and stopped.

Meng Ruliu is right. Wei Jingzhuo's army at Xiping Pass is his last trump card. If he escapes, Wei Shao will not give up the pursuit in order to eliminate him completely.

"Sister Yi, I don't know much about... military stuff."

As she spoke, she glanced at Su Yuze and saw that he had already eaten the sweet potato and was licking the skin. She picked up a large sweet potato and gave it to Su Yuze, and handed the other to Meng Ruliu.

“Sister, to tell you the truth,” Meng Ruliu took the sweet potato, “the Southern Chu army doesn’t even need to attack Xiping Pass. They only need to cut off the supply route from Youzhou to Xiping Pass, and Xiping Pass will fall.”

Su Wan paused for a moment, then said, "Sister, is my understanding correct? If Xiping Pass is the brain of a person, then Youzhou is the heart. The heart constantly pumps blood and nutrients to the brain so that the brain can survive. But the Southern Chu army wants to cut off the blood vessels, so that the brain will not get nutrients and will die?"

Meng Ruliu said, seemingly understanding but not quite, "That's roughly the idea. If the brain doesn't get nutrients, it will die."

Su Wan looked worried.

Hearing Meng Ruliu's words, it seemed that Xiping Pass was doomed to fall. Chu Yi had said the same thing to her before. What could they do?

If they try to escape, it means they will lose everything. Wei Shao will send people to hunt them down to the ends of the earth, and nowhere will be safe for them.

Although Wei Shao was not as talented as Wei Jingzhuo, he was, after all, a prince recognized by Emperor Kangping. With Emperor Kangping's death, the ministers would certainly support Wei Shao as the next emperor, and no one would defy the trend and support Wei Jingzhuo.
