Chapter 206 The Wine Is Really Spicy

Once you have something to worry about, everything else seems dull and uninteresting.

Su Wan lay on the bed, watching the fantasy drama she had been watching earlier on her tablet. She usually enjoyed the show immensely, but this time she couldn't concentrate at all.

The screen in front of me showed figures swaying back and forth, each saying incomprehensible lines, their mouths shaped like they were reading one, two, three, four, five, six, seven.

When the scene changes, either the male lead is striking a pose, or the female lead is showing off her face, or the two of them are moving in slow motion, striking a pose and showing off their faces.

In another switch, the male lead fought a bloody battle without a single hair out of place.

Then, when the female lead turns evil, she will always wear black eyeshadow, as if afraid the audience won't know she has become bad.

I can't concentrate on it at all.

Actually... my mind is just too chaotic.

Wei Jingzhuo made a risky move, gathering two thousand healthy soldiers to launch a night raid on Wei Shao's army camp. Meng Kuan and his daughter accompanied him. They had already been on their way for half an hour.

She couldn't help, so she could only stay at home and wait.

Forget about watching dramas, it's a miracle my heart didn't jump out of my throat.

Wei Shao still has 50,000 troops. What if they surround Wei Jingzhuo and his men? What if Wei Jingzhuo is hit by an arrow? What if my sworn sister's warhorse gets its hoof cut by a knife...?

The more she thought about it, the more frightened she became, and a chill ran down her spine.

She tossed the tablet back into the apartment, got out of bed, poured herself a glass of hot water and gulped it down, only then did she feel the chill subside slightly.

She paced back and forth in the house several times, but she couldn't wait any longer. She put on her cotton-padded coat and hat, turned on the hand warmer, added two pieces of burning charcoal, and then went out the door.

It was frighteningly cold outside. The moonlight was like flowing snow, freezing the air dry and cold. You could probably freeze a basin of water instantly if you poured it on it.

Lin Qingfeng, who was guarding the door, saw her come out and said, "Mistress, it's too cold outside. Would you like to go out?"

“It’s alright, I just want to go up to the city wall and take a look,” Su Wan took a deep breath, feeling the coldness from her mouth all the way to her stomach, and involuntarily shivered. “I really can’t wait like this.”

Lin Qingfeng said, "Mistress, I will escort you there."

Su Wan nodded and walked ahead. Lin Qingfeng summoned several guards to follow behind her.

She walked on the rough stones on the street to the top of the city wall, where the blazing bonfires brought her some warmth.

Contrary to their usual behavior, the soldiers didn't huddle around the campfire for warmth. Instead, they stood on the ramparts, gazing eastward, forming an impenetrable human wall, three layers deep. Everyone held their breath, no one spoke, as if watching a suspense film.

She wasn't tall enough, and even on tiptoe she could only see the shoulder of the soldier in front of her. A little anxious, she said to a tall soldier blocking her way, "Excuse me, I want to see too."

The soldier turned around impatiently, but upon seeing her, his expression immediately changed to respect. He stepped aside and patted the soldier in front of him on the shoulder. The other soldier turned around, saw her, and also quickly moved aside.

The soldiers on the city wall had all been wounded, and many of them had been treated by her. When they saw her coming, they all made way for her.

Just as Su Wan was about to move forward, a general in the crowd shouted, "Look, it's our lord! Our lord is back!"

Then another general shouted, "They're beating the victory drums! A great victory! A great victory!"

The city walls erupted in cheers.

Su Wan also heard the rousing drumbeats coming from below the city, but didn't understand their meaning. Lin Qingfeng parted the cheering soldiers and came to her, excitedly saying, "Mistress, the lord has returned victorious. The drumbeats signify a great victory."

"Really!" Su Wan peered down from the edge of the eaves.

A cavalry force was galloping towards the city gate, like a winding fire dragon. Leading them were Wei Jingzhuo and his daughter Meng Kuan, followed by more than a dozen lieutenants. All of them had their armor stained with blood, but their spirits were high, and there was no sign of injury. The cavalrymen in the column shouted "Victory!" in unison and beat their war drums.

Her anxiety and fear vanished in an instant, and she cheered and jumped up like the soldiers around her, taking off her cotton hat and throwing it into the air.

In the distance, many tents in Wei Shaojun's camp were ablaze, half of the camp was engulfed in flames, and thick smoke billowed into the sky, even obscuring the moon. Even without getting close, one could tell that the losses must have been devastating.

Su Wan ran down the city wall, where soldiers had already opened the city gates, and Wei Jingzhuo led his cavalry in single file.

The soldiers who remained in the city poured out of their houses, lining the streets to welcome the returning troops. Torches were so numerous that they illuminated the streets as bright as day. Cheers rose and fell like waves, and everyone's face beamed with pride.

When Meng Ruliu saw her, she excitedly reached out from her horse and called out, "Sister-in-law, sister-in-law! We fought our way in and out three times without hurting a single person."

Su Wan exclaimed happily, "No one was hurt?"

“Of course,” Meng Ruliu shouted, “all two thousand soldiers have returned. If Wei Shao hadn’t run away so fast, we would have captured him alive. What a pity.”

Su Wan was overjoyed and went to greet Wei Jingzhuo, raising her hands and jumping up and down, shouting, "Ah Jin, Ah Jin, you're the best!"

Wei Jingzhuo smiled, waved to her in the crowd, and spurred his horse forward.

Su Wan was overjoyed and ran back to the General's Mansion with the group.

The general's mansion was brightly lit, filled with the sounds of drums and music, and a victory celebration banquet was being held. Everyone changed their clothes, washed away the dust of the journey, and gathered together in high spirits.

Even Meng Kuan, no longer dejected from his previous defeat, said to the generals who remained in the city: "The enemy was completely unprepared. We charged in from the south, fought our way out from the north, and then fought our way back, killing thousands of enemy soldiers. This battle was so exhilarating."

Su Wan raised her wine cup and said, "My husband has won a great victory this time. I would like to toast my husband with a cup."

Wei Jingzhuo picked up his wine cup and asked with a smile, "A-Wan, can you drink?"

Su Wan said, "Of course, my husband is fearless in battle, so how could I, as your wife, be afraid of a small cup of wine?"

At this point, even if you don't know how to drink, you have to. Everyone is in high spirits, and we can't spoil their fun.

She raised her wine cup and downed it without hesitation, feeling a burning sensation in her throat, which instantly warmed her chest. She quickly put down the cup, coughed a few times, and felt her face burning.

Wei Jingzhuo slammed his hand on the table and said, "Very well, gentlemen, let's raise our cups and drink together."

All the generals in the hall picked up their wine bowls and drank them down in one gulp.

As everyone was laughing and talking, a guard came in and said, "Your Majesty, the spies we planted in the capital have found out the details of His Majesty's assassination attempt and are waiting outside the door."

Wei Jingzhuo ordered a scout to enter. The scout saw not only the generals in the hall, but also women such as Su Wan and Meng Ruliu. He said to Wei Jingzhuo, "My lord, shouldn't we report this matter privately later?"

Wei Jingzhuo smiled and waved his hand, saying, "We are all family here, so please feel free to speak."

The scout replied, "Good. I have ascertained the details of His Majesty's assassination attempt. It was carried out by Yang Yaozu, His Majesty's closest and most trusted eunuch."
