Chapter 256 Never Give Up

Su Wan never imagined that she would one day face such a desperate situation.

She considered what she would do if she encountered robbers while out alone and learned how to use pepper spray. She also thought about escaping a fire, which would require her to crawl on the ground, covering her mouth and nose with a soaked towel. She even learned how to cope with earthquakes.

They simply haven't learned what to do in the event of a sudden flood.

While her mind was still reeling, Snowflake let out a hiss and carried her toward a nearby hill.

She was startled and pulled hard on the reins, saying, "Stop snowflakes."

Wei Jingzhuo, Chu Mingyao, the Duke and Duchess Bai, and the others were still on the flat ground; she couldn't just think about escaping for her own life.

Snowflakes seemed not to understand her thoughts, but they still stopped, turned their heads and called out to the surging flood in the distance, as if to say, "Master, can't you see the flood coming?"

Su Wan turned around and called out to Wei Jingzhuo and the others, "Ah Jin, Sister Chu, come with me quickly."

The crowd was in complete chaos, with shouts and neighing of horses. Half of the accompanying Jin army cavalry and the Southern Chu troops turned their horses around and rode back the way they came, intending to escape when the floodwaters reached them. The other half rode their horses towards the capital of Southern Chu.

Wei Jingzhuo called out to Su Wan, "Awan, you go up the mountain first, I'll be right there."

After giving instructions to Su Wan, Wei Jingzhuo rode up to the stunned Duke Bai and his wife and said, "Excuse me, sirs." He then picked one of them up in each hand, lifted them into the air, and spurred his horse to chase after Su Wan.

Chu Mingyao also rode up to the Fourth Prince and said, "Fourth Brother, what are you standing there for? Run!"

The fourth prince seemed not to hear her words, but stood there blankly, staring at the approaching flood, and said: "Our dikes are very strong and will not be washed away by the river. Someone has breached the mouth of the Gui River... It was done by the Great Jin army."

Chu Mingyao grabbed his collar and said, "Don't be silly. Do you think the Jin army would flood their general? Come up the mountain with me now."

The fourth prince remained unmoved and said, "Father has passed away, my eldest and second brothers are also dead, my seventh brother's fate is unknown, and my fifth brother is also gone... A flood has come and destroyed our Southern Chu Kingdom."

After saying that, he raised his arms in front of the flood.

"Are you crazy? Sixth Brother and Eighth Sister are still here! Run!"

Chu Mingyao shouted anxiously, grabbing his arm and pulling desperately, but she wasn't strong enough to pull the Fourth Prince away.

Just as the stalemate was reaching its peak, Su Wan's piercing scream rang out.

"Sister Chu, run!"

Chu Mingyao shivered and turned to look at the floodwaters, which were now less than two miles away from her. She couldn't care less about pulling the Fourth Prince back; she spurred her horse towards the small hill where Su Wan and the others were.

I had only run halfway up the mountain when a rumbling sound came from behind me, and the ground began to shake.

Wei Jingzhuo stood on high ground, stretched out his hand, and shouted to her, "Hurry!"

Knowing the floodwaters were behind her, she quickly pulled her legs up onto the saddle, leaped upwards with all her might, and called out, "Your Highness!"

Wei Jingzhuo was prepared; he reached out and grabbed her wrist, pulling her up. Even so, the water soaked her legs. Her mount didn't have time to climb the mountain; it only let out one cry before being swept away by the flood, its head briefly appearing in the water before sinking.

Su Wan stood atop the hill, watching the floodwaters approach from afar, her heart pounding wildly.

This was the first time she had ever witnessed a flood up close. Just moments before, it seemed so far away, but in the blink of an eye, the floodwaters had surged right in front of her. Those who tried to escape to either side, both people and horses, were all swallowed by the flood. Even the carriage carrying the Fourth Prince and the Duke and Duchess of Bai's carriage was not spared.

The flood she saw was not the clear river water, but a mudslide carrying rolling silt and rocks. In the yellowish-brown water, even boulders the size of horse-drawn carriages were constantly being tossed about, and tree trunks as thick as a person's embrace were bobbing up and down. Several people surfaced in the water and shouted, but it was impossible to see who they were. In the blink of an eye, they were swept dozens of meters away and then disappeared without a trace in the water.

The land, which was once full of spring, was instantly turned into a vast ocean.

She stared blankly at the disaster before her, and asked, "What happened? Why did this happen?"

Chu Mingyao came to her breathlessly, wiped away her tears, and said, "Sister, someone has breached the mouth of the Gui River. My fourth brother is finished."

“It was Bai Zhiyi,” Su Wan turned to Chu Mingyao and said, “It could only have been her.”

She couldn't think of anyone else with such a crazy idea.

"Impossible, it couldn't have been Zhiyi who did it," said Mother Bai. "Perhaps the heavy rain loosened the riverbank..."

She was so frightened that she was only just recovering. When she heard Bai Zhiyi mentioned, she immediately spoke up to defend her.

Duke Bai pulled his mother aside and said, "Madam, Zhiyi is no longer the daughter you know. Perhaps she really did it."

White Mother screamed, "I don't believe it!"

The elderly couple were arguing, and Chu Mingyao said to Su Wan, "Sister, let's not think about this now. The most important thing is to think about how to escape."

Su Wan looked around. The small hill where they were now like an isolated island in a vast ocean, surrounded by muddy yellow floodwaters. In the distance, the walls of the Southern Chu capital were also being washed away by the flood.

Beside the capital of Southern Chu, Jinhua Mountain stands downstream, towering majestically amidst the floodwaters.

“We are closest to that mountain,” Wei Jingzhuo said, pointing to Jinhua Mountain. “If we can swim to that mountain, we will be safe.”

Chu Mingyao said, "You absolutely must not swim. The water is full of mud, rocks, and trees... and the current is very strong. If you jump into the water, you will die immediately."

Just as he finished speaking, the roof of a house was swept over by water, crashing into the hillside with a loud bang before shattering into pieces and sinking to the bottom. Everyone was shaken and sat down on the ground, except for Wei Jingzhuo, who remained standing.
