Su Wan looked towards the wall and saw a dark-skinned, tall and strong man whose features resembled Lu Zhao's.
This person must be the older brother that Lu Zhao mentioned earlier.
Upon seeing his elder brother, Lu Zhao was so frightened that he quickly hid behind Su Wan.
She first clarified for herself, "Big brother, I didn't cause any trouble this time, you're not allowed to hit me, you can ask Sister A-Wan if you don't believe me."
The man glared at her, then bowed apologetically to Su Wan, saying, "My name is Lu Lin. My sister has been very rude. Please forgive her, Madam. I will take her back now."
Su Wan waved her hand, "Brother Lu, you misunderstand. Xiao Zhao is perfectly fine."
Seeing that Su Wan spoke up for her, Lin Zhao became bolder. She stuck her head out and said confidently, "My brother told me not to go out and rob, and I have already agreed. I'm just here to learn some skills from Sister Wan."
Lu Lin asked, "What do you want to learn?"
She answered confidently, "Cooking!"
Lu Lin glanced at his younger sister and couldn't help but roll his eyes. Someone like her trying to cook? It would be a miracle if she didn't burn the house down.
He really regrets it now. He let his younger sister follow him since she was little, and now she doesn't act like a woman at all.
She's fifteen now and hasn't even had a suitor. She spends all her time brandishing knives and guns and has even learned to beat men.
He shook his head, sighed, and said helplessly to her, "I'd be grateful if you could just stay home. I don't expect you to cook any decent meals. Our few dilapidated thatched huts aren't even enough to fuel your fire."
Lin Zhao was unconvinced. She pulled Su Wan and said, "Sister Wan's cooking is so delicious, I want to learn from her!"
"Big brother, don't worry, I definitely won't let you down this time," she tugged at Su Wan's sleeve and winked at her, "Sister Wan, don't you think so?"
Su Wan glanced down at her, her lips twitching slightly: "But I'm not good at cooking!"
Although she's a decent cook, she's not quite a master yet.
Lu Zhao looked at her with admiration: "Sister A-Wan is not good at cooking, but she still makes it so delicious. What would it be like if she were good at it? I just ate Sister A-Wan's cooking, and it was even better than the food in the restaurants in the city!"
She made up her mind; from now on, she would follow Sister A-Wan.
Having been siblings for over a decade, Lu Lin could easily see through her little scheme. Staring at her, he rushed over and grabbed her.
"Big brother, what are you doing?"
"Go home."
"No, I don't want to stay at home like a useless piece of trash."
"Go back and learn needlework from your mother."
Lin Zhao retorted, "Would you dare wear the clothes I showed off?"
Lu Lin: "..."
He really didn't dare.
Su Wan chuckled; the brother and sister were really quite amusing.
The commotion outside startled Wei Jingzhuo, who was reading inside.
He put down the book in his hand, got up and slowly walked to the courtyard.
The sunlight shone on him, and what should have been a gentle and refined demeanor was instead made to appear exceptionally sharp and cold by the scars on his face.
Lu Lin was exceptionally sensitive to dangerous people and things. The moment he saw Wei Jingzhuo, he knew that he was no ordinary person.
He looked at Wei Jingzhuo warily.
Wei Jingzhuo glanced at him, then his gaze fell on the feet of the man.
He has a steady footwork; he's a trained fighter.
He withdrew his gaze and looked at Su Wan gently.
Su Wan went over and helped him up: "Ah Jin, why did you come out?"
He said in a calm voice, "I came out to take a look when I had nothing to do."
Lu Lin knew that he and his sister had disturbed Wei Jingzhuo, so he clasped his hands in a salute to him and said, "I am Lu Lin. Please forgive me for disturbing you."
Wei Jingzhuo nodded slightly and said nothing.
Su Wan said to Lin Zhao, "Xiao Zhao, you should go back quickly, the food will get cold and won't taste good. Come and find me if you have time."
Lin Zhao smiled and said, "Okay, if there's anything you need help with in the future, Sister A-Wan, just let me know."
After the brother and sister left, Su Wan prepared to help him sit in the yard to bask in the sun while she changed the dressing on his foot.
When Lin Zhao returned home, she put the food she had taken from Su Wan on the table.
With her head full of white hair, Lu's mother looked at the two of them and sighed, "Xiao Zhao, did you go outside again to beg for food from others?"
Xiao Zhao's dark face flushed red.
“Mother,” she sat down next to Lu’s mother, “I was wrong. I will never beg for food again. If it weren’t for the fact that Sister A-Wan’s cooking smelled so good today that I couldn’t resist climbing over the wall to go to Sister A-Wan’s house…”
Lu's mother rolled her eyes at her unhappily.
“Sister A-Wan is really amazing. I saw that she planted something in the yard and I wanted to ask her. If it’s something to eat, we can plant it with Sister A-Wan so that at least we won’t go hungry this winter.”
She knew nothing about farming, but she also knew that without food, her family would starve to death.
Since their eldest brother left the mountain stronghold, they have had no income. The winters in the Northwest are exceptionally cold, and many people freeze to death or starve to death every year.
These days, the only way to get food is to join the army.
But her mother wouldn't allow her to join the army.
Lu Lin squatted at the doorway, listening to Xiao Zhao and her mother's conversation.
He was also worried. He had a lot of strength and was quite skilled in martial arts, but he had nowhere to use it.
Upon hearing Xiao Zhao's suggestion, he suddenly understood.
He suddenly stood up, walked up to the two women, and said, “Mother, why don’t I join the army? Our Northwest Army is nearby, and I can come back to see you every ten days or half a month.”
