Su Wan watched from the rooftop as Bai Zhiyi suffered such cruel torture, and her heart ached. She dared not make a move and could only watch as the soldiers dragged Bai Zhiyi to the bed, and Xie Maoliang and the soldiers left the room.
Xie Maoliang went to drink with the county magistrate again, leaving two soldiers to guard him.
One soldier said to the other, "Let's lock the door and go get a drink."
Another said, "The general has ordered that we must not leave. What if this female prisoner escapes?"
The one who said earlier said, "You're stupid. She doesn't have either hand. How can she run? Just lock the door. We've been on guard duty for most of the night. It'll be good for us to have a drink to warm ourselves up."
"But what if the general..."
"The general and Magistrate Sun are drinking. We'll go have a few drinks and eat something before we come back. It's not like we're never coming back... Are you really not leaving? I'll go by myself."
"Don't walk so fast, wait for me!"
Two soldiers ran out of the courtyard gate and headed towards the campfire, joining the crowd eating and drinking.
Su Wan lifted the tile, revealing a hole large enough for her to pass through. She stretched her feet down, first stepping on the beam, then grabbed the beam with both hands, suspending her body in the air before landing on the table.
There were bloodstains on the table, a slash mark, and two pale hands with slightly bent fingers. She couldn't bear to look any longer, so she got down to the floor and went to the bedside.
Bai Zhiyi lay on the bed with her hair disheveled, looking like a corpse, her eyes tightly closed behind the mask. Her severed wrists were charred, but the bleeding had stopped.
She called softly, "Miss Bai."
Bai Zhiyi's body trembled slightly. She opened her eyes and then closed them tightly again, her body shaking uncontrollably. Su Wan knew she was enduring excruciating pain. She sighed inwardly, took a painkiller from the pharmacy, and gave it to Bai Zhiyi with water.
After a long while, Bai Zhiyi opened her eyes again and stared at her intently: "It's you... Am I already dead?"
Su Wan shook her head and said, "I am alive."
Bai Zhiyi propped herself up on her elbows, raised her arms as if to grab her, and said urgently, "What about His Highness? How is he? Tell me quickly, tell me quickly."
The broken wrist slammed into Su Wan's shoulder, causing her to groan in pain again.
Su Wan gently grasped her arm: "Ah Jin is receiving treatment at a family of renowned doctors, so you don't need to worry."
Bai Zhiyi fell back onto the bed, sobbing, "So Your Highness is still alive, I'm so happy. But I'm in so much pain, I can't smile."
