Chapter 4 He Has His Father's Style

Moonlight spilled into the Su family's courtyard, and the bluestone-paved path within reflected a faint glow.

Su Wan left the small courtyard where the woodshed was located and sneaked into Su Yuze's courtyard under the cover of darkness.

The courtyard was pitch black, and there wasn't even a servant on night watch.

Realizing something was wrong, she quickly walked to Su Yuze's room and tried pushing the door; it was ajar. She glanced around the room; it was empty. The blankets on the bed were neatly arranged, untouched.

As expected, the man was taken away by the Yang family.

She left the house with a dark expression and headed towards the courtyard of Su Heng and his wife.

When the maid on night watch saw that it was Su Wan, she quickly called out to her.

"Miss! What are you doing? Why did you come out of the woodshed?"

"Get out of my way!" Su Wan pushed aside the maid who was blocking her way. "Summon Yang Shi out immediately and hand over my brother!"

Yang, who was fast asleep inside, was awakened by the noise outside. She was already annoyed that Su Heng had gone out to have an affair with that slut again today, and now she was inexplicably woken up. She put on her coat and went out with an angry look on her face.

"Who's making noise outside?" Madam Yang was somewhat surprised to see that it was Su Wan who had come out. "Why are you out here?"

Su Wan ignored her and instead asked her directly for the person.

"I'm not here to waste my breath on you. Hand over my brother, or I'll go to the county government right now and accuse you of greed and murder, and of changing my niece's marriage!" Su Wan said coldly.

The magistrate of Suiyang County was a student of Su's father, and out of respect for Su's father, he could not pretend not to know.

Therefore, Madam Yang was still somewhat afraid that she would report the matter to the authorities.

This is why Yang dared not humiliate the original owner too much.

The Zhao family has come to marry her, and the wedding procession has arrived in Suiyang County and is staying at an inn, waiting for the wedding ceremony tomorrow. She was afraid that this matter would become a big deal and be found out by the Zhao family.

This marriage absolutely cannot be ruined by Su Wan!

She said reluctantly, "If you want someone, then you'd better get married obediently, and you'll see them when the time comes!"

Su Wan stared intently at her with her dark eyes and asked, word by word, "When can I see my brother?"

Madam Yang was somewhat frightened by her gaze; how come she had never noticed this brat's imposing manner before?

Judging from Su Wan's attitude, if she isn't allowed to see that brat Su Yuze today, she definitely won't hand over the jade pendant.

“Tomorrow,” Madam Yang said, suppressing her anger, “when you get married tomorrow, just give me the jade pendant your mother left you, and you will naturally see that boy then.”

Madam Yang was so angry at the thought of the jade pendant that her teeth ached. She personally searched Su Wan's room for two days, but couldn't find a trace of it. She had no idea where that brat had hidden it.

Now, she can only get Su Wan to hand over the jade pendant if she holds Su Yuze in her hands.

Su Wan said, "You'd better let me see my brother first thing tomorrow morning, or your daughter can forget about marrying into the Zhao family."

Madam Yang cared most about her daughter's marriage and hoped it would go smoothly tomorrow. She never expected Su Wan to dare threaten her!

"You!" Madam Yang stamped her foot in anger. "You go back to the woodshed right now!"

After saying that, Su Wan turned and left.

"Stop right there!" Yang shouted, stopping her. "Where's your cousin?"

Su Wan stopped and turned around with an amused look. "How would I, a young woman about to get married, know where your nephew is so late at night?"

Madam Yang looked incredulous. Previously, Yang Yaozu had been preoccupied with finding Su Wan, and she had turned a blind eye. Now, Su Wan was swaggering out demanding her return, but Yang Yaozu was nowhere to be seen. Had he finished his fun and gone out?

“Mrs. Yang, remember this: I need to see Su Yuze first thing tomorrow morning, or I’ll tear the Su family apart.”

After leaving her message, Su Wan departed. Only Madam Yang remained, watching her departing figure with a fierce glare.

...

The men in black who left the Su family quickly arrived at Shigang Village and stopped outside a high wall.

After observing his surroundings and finding no one around, he leaped onto the wall and jumped into the courtyard.

A tall, middle-aged woman was waiting in the courtyard. When she saw the man in black jump down, she rushed over and asked, "Qingfeng, how was it? What do you think of the Su family's daughter?"

The man in black thought about what he had seen and heard that night, especially that snip of the scissors, and his lips twitched involuntarily. He didn't know how to speak.

Seeing that he remained silent, the woman urged anxiously, "Hurry up and tell us. If that Yang family's daughter is of bad character, we still have a chance to salvage the situation."

At worst, we can go to the Su family right now and call off the marriage.

Even though my master is suffering now, he is not a match for a woman of low character.

If it weren't for his master being falsely accused and demoted to this place, wouldn't every noble lady in the capital be waiting for his master to choose from?

They had no choice but to find a bride for their master to bring them good luck this time.

It has been a month since their master was exiled from the capital to the remote northwest frontier, but he has been in a semi-conscious state for a long time, and lately he has been awake even less. They are afraid that if this continues, something bad will surely happen to their master.

Later they remembered the fortune telling Master Huiming of Tongchan Temple had given their master:

Life and death are on this shore.

Nirvana is the other shore.

Waiting for the destined one to appear,

Only by enduring death can this calamity be resolved.

At the time, none of them understood what Master Huiming meant by those words.

Later, Master Huiming explained: To resolve this calamity, one must marry a woman whose birth date and time are compatible with one's own; then the death calamity can be resolved.

They also said that the woman would only appear when her master was in danger.
