Chapter 90 Farewell

As night deepened on the mountain, the lights in the village shone even brighter.

Su Wan saw that Wei Jingzhuo was being surrounded by soldiers drinking, so she stopped to watch.

She didn't want to interfere with the man's drinking and wanted to tell Lu Zhao to go back together. She had only taken two steps when a rough male voice came from not far away.

"Hey, young doctor, come and have a drink with us."

Su Wan looked toward the source of the sound and saw a man who looked like an officer among a group of soldiers raising a wine bowl to her.

She dressed in men's clothing for ease of movement, but she never expected to run into trouble in a place like this.

Before she could refuse, the officer staggered over, carrying a wine jug. As he drew closer, Su Wan saw that his face was flushed and his breath reeked of alcohol; he was clearly drunk.

Just as the officer was about to put his hand on Su Wan's shoulder, Wei Jingzhuo stopped him with a cold remark: "General Zhao, it is not advisable for Doctor Su to drink alcohol."

General Zhao scratched his head. He'd never heard of military doctors being forbidden from drinking before; they'd always been heavy drinkers. Why was his lord suddenly protecting a doctor?

He first looked at Wei Jingzhuo, then turned to Su Wan, his gaze sweeping back and forth between the two of them for a moment before he gave Su Wan an ambiguous smile.

He had an "I understand" look on his face.

Then he staggered toward the crowd.

Su Wan was speechless.

What was General Zhao's expression like? It was as if he had figured something out.

She looked at Wei Jingzhuo again, but Wei Jingzhuo did not explain. He simply took her wrist and led her to a quiet place.

General Zhao walked back into the crowd and stared blankly as the two figures walked away.

He had never seen his lord do anything so outrageous, actually holding that Doctor Su's hand. In the past, his lord had always kept his distance from others.

Not to mention holding hands.

Lu Zhao walked over and waved in front of him: "General Zhao, what are you looking at?"

Although she didn't know why Sister Awan was dressing up as a man, she didn't tell General Zhao the truth.

General Zhao snapped out of his daze and took a big gulp of wine: "Good wine!"

After speaking, he returned to the soldiers, and soon after, bursts of laughter echoed through the camp.

Su Wan returned to the house. Compared to the hustle and bustle of the military camp, this place felt more like an elegant courtyard in a mountain resort.

The furniture in the room was clean and bright, and even the sunflowers she had always kept were brought over.

She hadn't expected that Wei Jingzhuo would remember such a small thing.

Seeing her standing by the window staring blankly at the sunflower, Wei Jingzhuo walked over and stood behind her, saying softly, "How could I forget Awan's things?"

Su Wan's lips curled up slightly.

Considering what this person had done recently, she couldn't pretend she didn't know. That would be too heartless.

She turned to him and asked, "Ah Jin, do you know what this flower is used for?"

By this time, the sunflower had grown to the height of a person, its leaves had long since withered, leaving only its enormous flower head at the very top.

The sunflower seeds inside are all ripe.

Wei Jingzhuo was very knowledgeable; he had seen this thing before, but he didn't know its specific use.

But as for what use it might be, he wasn't sure. He shook his head and looked at Su Wan.

Su Wan broke off the flower plate, then took out a melon seed, peeled it open and showed it to him: "This is called a melon seed. It can be eaten. If you press it to extract oil, you can use it to stir-fry vegetables."

In ancient times, wealthy families used lard for cooking, while most poor families could not afford oil.

If we could grow these melon seeds, extract the oil, and sell it, we would surely make a lot of money.

Wei Jingzhuo had of course thought of these things as well. When Su Wan mentioned the uses of sunflowers, his cold eyes immediately turned into surprise.

He certainly believed what Su Wan said.

“Ah Wan,” he hugged her from behind, resting his chin on the top of her head, and whispered, “Thank you.”

The deep, gentle voice reached her ears, and her heart pounded.

"No...you're welcome." She tried to break free from his embrace, but he held her tightly.

Wei Jingzhuo did not let go; he held her without saying a word.

The room was silent, and moonlight streamed in through the window, falling on the two of them.

He wouldn't give Su Wan a chance to refuse, nor would he accept her rejection.

After a long while, a gentle voice came from above Su Wan's head: "Ah Wan, I'm going back to the Northwest Camp tomorrow. Do you... do you want to come with me?"

He left in a hurry this time, as there were still matters to attend to at the Northwest Camp. Firstly, he needed to settle the two thousand soldiers there, and secondly, he wanted to see how the potato harvest that Su Wan had mentioned was going.

Unexpectedly, a small courtyard could yield a warehouse full of potatoes. If supplied to the soldiers here, they would at least have enough to eat for the entire winter.

However, he also knew that this was for next year's farming, and that he would completely solve the soldiers' food and fodder problem next year.

As for the imperial court, they haven't provided any food supplies for a year. If it weren't for Su Wan planting these potatoes, he probably wouldn't have been able to hold out for long in the war.

All of this changed because of Su Wan.

Su Wan turned to look at him. She saw expectation in his eyes, even a little cautiousness. She suddenly wanted to tease him and deliberately said, "No, you think I'll just go because you tell me to? Who knows what kind of strange woman will come looking for you then?"

A smile appeared on Wei Jingzhuo's face. His chest vibrated slightly, and his deep, clear voice reached her ears: "Awan, I am very happy."
