Beneath the walls of Yanxun Pass, soldiers of the Ghost Army, clad in black armor, roared and charged toward the walls, followed by soldiers of the Southern Chu Army.
The Jin soldiers on the city wall ignored the demon army charging ahead and instead fired arrows at the Southern Chu soldiers further away. The Southern Chu soldiers raised their shields to defend themselves while slowly pushing dozens of siege ladders forward.
These siege ladders were all made of iron and were extremely heavy. Although they were equipped with wheels, it was still very difficult for dozens of Southern Chu soldiers to push them.
Xie Maoliang, who was watching the battle from the rear, said to Qiu Jie, "They know that arrows are useless. When the Fifth Prince's army scales the city walls, will they use rolling logs to pelt them down?"
Standing on the dragon carriage, Qiu Jie said in a relaxed tone, "They don't know the power of the black armor yet. Mr. Jiang can talk to General Xie about it."
Jiang Wenpei said, "These armors were made by the previous generations of family heads. The ruler of the Southern Chu Kingdom at that time wanted to attack the Great Jin Kingdom, so he sought help from our family of divine physicians. The family head of that generation ordered craftsmen to make these armors. However, the family head later regretted it, and they have never been able to use them. Ordinary logs and stones cannot harm the people inside at all."
Xie Maoliang said, "This black armor is so powerful, could you get me a set too?"
Jiang Wenpei said, "The full suit of armor weighs two hundred jin, and only those who have been given the secret medicine have the strength to wear it. Although General Xie is tall and strong, he probably won't be able to walk in it."
Xie Maoliang was displeased and glanced at Qiu Jie.
The black armor, though sturdy, seemed unable to withstand the defensive gun in Qiu Jie's hand. If only I could get my hands on that gun. Whoever it was, one shot would be fatal.
Qiu Jie said, "Look, everyone, the Fifth Prince's soldiers have already reached the city wall."
This attack employed a simultaneous assault from both sides. Using the Yanxun Pass gate tower as a boundary, the Southern Chu army launched the main attack from one side, while the Ghost Army launched the main attack from the other. The fear was that the Ghost Army might harm their own troops.
Fifth Prince Chu Kai led his ghost army soldiers to the foot of the city wall. Chu Kai turned back and urged the Southern Chu army to quickly push the siege ladders up. Some of the remaining ghost army soldiers tried to climb the city wall directly, while others roared and punched the wall, making loud thuds.
Thousands of ghost soldiers crowded together below the city wall, while the Jin soldiers on the city wall raised stones and logs and threw them down.
Stones rained down on the demon army's helmets and shoulders. Those hit only swayed slightly before returning to normal. Far from harming any of the demons, the stones only drove them into a frenzy.
The ghost army attracted the soldiers of the Great Jin, and the soldiers of the Southern Chu who were responsible for transporting the iron ladder finally pushed the iron ladder to the city wall.
Dozens of iron ladders collided with the city wall one after another. The ghost army began to climb up the iron ladders. From a distance, half of the city wall of Yanxun Pass looked like it was covered with black ants.
Qiu Jie clapped her hands and said, "Good! As long as the Fifth Prince can breach the city walls, the Jin army will surely be defeated. Let's beat the drums to cheer them on!"
The drummers of the Southern Chu army began to beat their war drums, the sound as dense as raindrops. The Southern Chu army also gained momentum and shouted in unison.
Jiang Wenpei pointed to the city wall and said, "Miss Qiu, look, it seems like a new batch of soldiers have been brought to the city wall."
Qiu Jie saw it too. The soldiers on the city wall seemed to have been replaced. The new soldiers were not carrying bows and arrows or stones, but rather a section of green bamboo tube.
"What are they carrying?" she asked Xie Maoliang. "Can any of you see clearly?"
Xie Maoliang squinted at it for a while before saying, "It seems to be a bamboo joint, but I don't know what it's for."
Qiu Jie laughed and said, "Rolling logs and boulders are no match for you, so what use are bamboo? You were lucky to escape at Xiping Pass, but this time... no Western Rong army will come to your rescue."
Before they could finish speaking, the first ghost soldiers to climb the iron ladders had reached the top of the city wall. The ghost soldiers at the forefront gripped the iron ladders with one hand and swung their weapons with the other, hacking at the Jin soldiers on the city wall.
The Jin soldiers didn't parry or defend themselves; instead, they dodged and then raised their bamboo tubes, spraying streams of red water onto the demon soldiers' helmets. The demon soldiers, caught off guard, were sprayed with water from head to toe.
Xie Maoliang asked, "What are they doing?"
Qiu Jie stopped laughing and instructed her attendants, "Drive forward quickly, I want to take a closer look."
Before the vehicle could even move forward, everyone saw the demon soldiers on the city wall falling from the iron ladders. Some of the demon soldiers even hit people below as they fell, causing both of them to fall down together.
The ghost soldiers who fell to the ground let out inhuman screams, got up and wildly waved their weapons, killing indiscriminately without distinguishing friend from foe.
The Southern Chu soldiers below the iron ladder were caught off guard by the ghost army's attack on their own men, and chaos ensued.
Jiang Wenpei said, "Miss Qiu, I saw it clearly. It seems that anyone in the Fifth Prince's army who is sprayed with the red water will fall off the ladder. It's too strange."
As Qiu Jie watched the ghost army soldiers indiscriminately killing people below the city wall, her voice behind the mask filled with anger: "Is this a side effect of the drug? Come closer and take a look."
As the Southern Chu army escorted the imperial carriage forward, the ground below the city walls was littered with corpses. The cries of the wounded echoed through the crowd. The Ghost Army soldiers seemed to have completely lost their minds, killing not only Southern Chu soldiers but also their own comrades.
Qiu Jie angrily said, "Impossible, General Xie, quickly send someone to the front to find out what happened."
Xie Maoliang dared not disobey, but fearing being attacked by the ghost army, he sent several soldiers to the front. A short while later, a soldier ran back, coughing and covering his mouth, saying, "General, it seems like they're spraying pepper spray from the city wall."
Qiu Jie and Jiang Wenpei exclaimed in unison, "Chili water?!"
Su Wan's cheerful shouts rang out from the city gate tower of Yanxun Pass: "My potion is working! Everyone, let's do our best to defeat the monster army!"
