"Miss, why are you suddenly asking about these things?"
In the inn room, Zhao Fu looked at Su Wan sitting opposite him with some puzzlement.
“I was still young when my mother passed away,” Su Wan said, resting her chin on her hands. “Uncle Zhao, you must know about what happened back then, so please tell me about it?”
Zhao Fu said, "Since Miss asked, I will tell you. When Madam married Master, I had not yet entered the Su family, so I am not very clear about what happened before that. But one thing I remember clearly is that none of us knew which family Madam was from."
Su Wan nodded: "It was probably when my father and mother met on the way and fell in love at first sight."
Chu Yi had told her that the current emperor of Southern Chu did not have a family of renowned physicians as his empress; instead, he married another woman. The woman who escaped with the jade pendant was clearly her mother.
She wanted to know why her mother, a descendant of a family of renowned healers, refused to marry into the Southern Chu state and instead fled to this place.
It seems Zhao Fu is unaware of these things.
“When I entered the Su family, you were already three years old, and the Madam had already fallen ill at that time.” Zhao Fu gazed at the candlelight before him, lost in memories. “Actually, the entire Su family was originally managed by the Madam herself. It was only after she fell ill that she had to hire a steward. I was fortunate enough to be chosen by the Madam.”
Su Wan asked, "Uncle Zhao, what illness does my mother have?"
In her memory, she had asked her father about it. But he couldn't give her a clear answer, only saying that fate was playing tricks on them.
Zhao Fu said, "Miss, I don't know what illness Madam has. She's getting weaker every day. Master has spent a lot of money on Madam and invited many doctors, but none of them can figure out the cause of her illness."
"Is she getting weaker every day?" Su Wan asked.
Without specific testing, she couldn't possibly know what illness her mother had. But since her mother was a descendant of a family of renowned healers, how could she not even be able to cure her own illness?
“Yes, after Madam passed away, Master also fell ill a few years later. You were all grown up by then, Miss, you should remember.” Zhao Fu sighed, “Master was honest and upright throughout his life, and Madam was a woman of excellent character. Heaven was blind.”
Su Wan stood up and said, "Uncle Zhao, I understand everything. It's so late, you should rest now."
Zhao Fu got up to see Su Wan out. Su Wan returned to her room, closed the door and windows tightly. After checking that no one was under the bed, she got into bed and drew the bed curtains.
Even though Chu Yi said he wouldn't eavesdrop on her, she still had to be careful. If Chu Yi found out she had the jade pendant, he might just drag her back to Southern Chu.
She took the jade pendant out of the apartment and examined it carefully in her hand.
The jade pendant seemed unremarkable, but Chu Yi told her it possessed the power to bring the dead back to life. Was it really that miraculous?
After looking at it for a while and not being able to see anything, she tossed the jade pendant back into the apartment, grabbed a bottle of drink, took a couple of sips, pulled back the bed curtains, and jumped out of bed.
She still had to wait for the captain of the guards to report back, so she couldn't go to sleep so early.
After finishing a bottle of beverage, I threw the empty bottle into the apartment's trash can. A soft knock sounded at the door.
"Who is it?" she asked as she reached the door. "It's me, Madam," the captain of the guard said. "I'm back."
Su Wan opened the door and said to the captain of the guards, "Come in and talk."
The captain of the guards entered the room and asked Su Wan, "That prince of Southern Chu... wasn't he eavesdropping nearby, was he?"
Su Wan shook her head and said, "There shouldn't be. You can write down the information you have on paper."
The captain of the guards said in a low voice, "Madam, I am illiterate."
“I forgot,” Su Wan said. “You can just whisper. The window is closed, so he won’t hear you even if he’s outside.”
"That's right, we went to scout outside Suiyang City," the captain of the guards said. "The entire city of Suiyang is surrounded by that general's soldiers. He doesn't seem to intend to let anyone leave, lest someone report to the general's mansion."
"Who exactly is this general? He's thought of everything quite thoroughly," Su Wan said. "Does that mean we can't leave for the time being?"
“That should be the case,” the captain of the guards said. “They have already searched the lady once, but those women who were taken to the county office will definitely be recognized as not being the lady. I guess there will be another search by dawn at the latest.”
“They’re determined to capture me.” Su Wan put her hand on her forehead.
“The two men we sent out earlier are now being held in the county jail,” the captain of the guards said. “They didn’t reveal the lady’s identity. But the clerk recognized one of them as the one who was eavesdropping outside the hall last night, so he suspects the lady.”
Su Wan frowned and said, "In that case, I won't be safe even during the day."
The captain of the guards said, "Madam, please rest for a while. I will think of another way and make sure you are safely escorted out of Suiyang."
After seeing off the captain of the guards, Su Wan sat down at the table, a look of melancholy creeping over her.
The general, with a large number of soldiers, surrounded the small county of Suiyang. Even with guards escorting her, it was impossible for her to break through the soldiers' encirclement. Moreover, Ge Fanghai might search for her again during the day. Both Ge Fanghai and the general knew that she was in Suiyang County.
She had evaded capture once before, but she wasn't lucky enough to escape every time.
After thinking for a long time, she still couldn't come up with a good idea, so she got up, went to the window, opened it, took a whistle out of her pocket, and blew it.
Chu Yi gave her this whistle; it makes a sound like a bird chirping. She blows it whenever she needs Chu Yi.
She blew the whistle twice, and a window five rooms away opened. She peeked out and saw Chu Yi waving at her.
