Granny Cui was unaware that Su Wan had already brought Wei Jingzhuo's injuries under control. After a brief greeting to Su Wan, she hurriedly led the doctor into the house.
Knowing that Granny Cui was anxious, Su Wan made way for her and casually asked, "Aunt Cui, is this doctor from town?"
As they walked, Granny Cui whispered, "Madam, you may not know this, but it turns out that the master's medicine is prescribed by Doctor Zheng from Baohe Hall. I went to town to fetch Doctor Zheng, but it's already very late, and Doctor Zheng has long since gone to sleep. This is Doctor Jia on duty."
Su Wan understood what had happened, nodded to Doctor Jia who was passing by, and greeted him, "Hello, Doctor Jia."
The middle-aged man turned around and smiled slightly at her: "I greet you, Madam."
Their eyes met, and Su Wan's heart trembled slightly.
Even though it was her first time meeting this Dr. Jia, she felt as if she had seen him somewhere before, a sense of déjà vu.
While she was still in a daze, Doctor Jia had already walked past her and strode into the house.
Su Wan's gaze followed Doctor Jia's retreating figure. This doctor was tall and thin, with his hair tied up in a bun, wearing a long blue robe, and carrying a medicine chest. He looked no different from doctors in ancient times.
She shook her head, thinking perhaps she was seeing things. This Doctor Jia probably looked somewhat like someone from her past life, causing the illusion.
The three entered the room, where Wei Jingzhuo lay on the bed with his eyes closed, seemingly either asleep or resting, and did not respond to them.
Doctor Jia took off his medicine box, placed it on the table, and turned to Su Wan and Granny Cui, saying, "I need to treat the young master now, so please excuse me for a moment."
Granny Cui was taken aback and said, "Dr. Zheng didn't let us leave during the treatment. This..."
As Doctor Jia opened his medicine box, he said, "Doctor Zheng is Doctor Zheng, and I am me. I don't want anyone around when I'm treating patients. If you want the young master to wake up quickly, then wait outside the door."
Granny Cui was still worried and wanted to argue, but Su Wan tugged at her sleeve and said, "Granny Cui, since the doctor has spoken, let's wait outside."
“Alright, this servant will wait outside with Madam.” Granny Cui followed Su Wan out, not forgetting to turn back and remind her, “Doctor, please be careful, the consultation fee will be substantial.”
Doctor Jia turned around and smiled, "Don't worry, I will definitely treat you with all my might."
After the two left the room, Doctor Jia opened his medicine box and slowly said as he rummaged through it, "Young master, please take your hand out from under the covers so I can take your pulse."
Wei Jingzhuo kept his eyes closed, his chest rising and falling slowly under the blanket, without any response.
Doctor Jia turned to look at Wei Jingzhuo and urged, "Young master, you're clearly awake, so don't pretend to be asleep. I can see your eyelashes moving."
Wei Jingzhuo still did not respond.
A strange smile appeared on Doctor Jia's face. He took out a long, thin package from his medicine box, spread it out on the table, and inside was a steel dagger about two fingers wide and five inches long. Its blade gleamed with a faint blue light under the candlelight.
“You’ve been wise all your life but made a foolish mistake this time,” Doctor Jia picked up a dagger and concealed it in his sleeve, turning around with a sinister smile. “The assassins you sent earlier were just to force you to use force, thus triggering the poison in your body. And once the poison takes effect, your servants will inevitably have to go to Doctor Zheng, hehe.”
He walked smugly to the bedside: "Now that you are unconscious, no matter how skilled you are in martial arts, how can you withstand my assassination attempt?"
Once he stood by the bedside, Doctor Jia revealed the dagger and whispered, "What a pity, you'll never know who wanted to kill you... Oh, by the way, don't come looking for me in the underworld, I'm just following orders."
...
Su Wan pulled Granny Cui outside the door and whispered to her, "Aunt Cui, have you seen this doctor before?"
Granny Cui shook her head and said, "This servant will drive to Baohe Hall in town to find Doctor Zheng. Doctor Zheng has always prescribed medicine for the young master."
"And what about Doctor Zheng?"
"Perhaps he's asleep. I've never gone to see him in the middle of the night before. I saw Doctor Jia sitting in his office, so I quickly invited him over."
Su Wan frowned.
In other words, this Doctor Jia was meeting even Granny Cui for the first time.
Just as dusk was falling, a group of assassins attacked Wei Jingzhuo, and now a strange doctor has arrived. A stranger approached Wei Jingzhuo and then sent the two women away; something felt off.
She tried to recall Dr. Jia's face in her mind, trying to figure out why he gave her a sense of familiarity.
Suddenly she remembered.
What felt familiar to her was the gaze of this Doctor Jia; it was the gaze of the assassin she had encountered at the foot of the mountain.
A doctor is a compassionate person; how could a doctor who heals and saves lives have murderous intent?
No wonder those five assassins seemed so unprofessional. They were just bait; these were the real assassins!
She didn't even bother to explain to Granny Cui, and turned to rush into the house.
Wei Jingzhuo is dying, and as the widow of the deposed crown prince, she certainly can't escape either; the two of them are in the same boat. We must protect Wei Jingzhuo.
When she rushed into the house, the scene before her made her shudder.
Doctor Jia stood with his legs apart by the bed, bent over, his left hand tightly gripping Wei Jingzhuo's right hand. Wei Jingzhuo's eyes were wide open, his left hand gripping Doctor Jia's right wrist. The two, one standing and one lying down, were locked in a stalemate like wrestlers, their four arms trembling violently.
Su Wan screamed and ran forward a step, only then seeing that the assassin was holding a dagger in his right hand. The blade of the dagger gleamed with a cold, bluish light under the candlelight, and it was slowly stabbing towards Wei Jingzhuo's chest.
