Chapter 1 Fox Life
The moonlight was hazy, and the thin clouds spread out like light ink, revealing a few soft lights.
Lights suddenly lit up in the deserted courtyard covered with sedge and mugwort, and the faint flames danced up and down like fireflies.
Suddenly, birds chirped in the silent night.
First came the owl, then the white crane, then the bluebird, magpie, crow, and wild goose. It was like hundreds of birds singing together, each with its own rhythm, forming a musical score.
Fireflies flickered dimly, and two shadows shifted in the deserted courtyard.
One was a red fox with shiny fur and a pair of green eyes like will-o'-the-wisp.
One is a divine messenger in green clothes, with a high bun, a pretty face, a green jade belt on his waist, and a jade pen and a file in his hands.
The bird calls suddenly stopped.
The fox glanced toward the west wall with its green eyes, shook its head, and uttered a clear voice: "Don't be surprised, angel of the gods! The children of the owner of this yard have come. Let me drive them away."
The green-robed divine messenger relaxed his posture and let him do what he wanted.
Outside the west wall, two little boys with pigtails were lying on the wall and eavesdropping.
One of the children in green clothes said, "Cousin, did you hear that?"
Another child in yellow clothes gestured with his fingers: "Just a little bit, like a bird's chirping."
The little boy in yellow rolled his dark eyes and urged, "Brother Qiao, let's sneak in and take a look!"
The little boy in green quickly waved his hands: "No, no, Daddy said you are not allowed to enter the East Garden, inside... inside..." He hesitated and his face turned red.
"What's inside?" the little boy in yellow asked anxiously.
The green-clothed child's eyes flickered slightly, and he lowered his voice and said, "There's a fox."
The red fox listened with its ears tilted and opened its mouth to blow out a breath.
The little boy in yellow immediately felt a cold wind blowing out from the locked door of the East Garden, which made his back chill. The fire in his heart that was eager to try was extinguished in an instant, and fear arose in his heart.
fox.
Of course, it is not an ordinary fox, but a fox fairy, fox demon, or ghost fox.
It is often used by adults to scare children and has also been a strange character in folk legends.
The green-dressed child timidly asked, "Cousin, are you still going?"
The yellow-clothed boy laughed dryly and replied seriously, "Since uncle said we can't go, then let's not go. Let's go back quickly. Auntie will be worried if she can't find us later."
"Oh," the green-clothed kid responded, with a hint of disappointment in his tone.
After the two children left, the red-skinned fox with thin eyebrows and eyes in the deserted garden stopped blowing towards the door.
He shook his head and cursed, "You little bastard." Then he stood up, bowed behind him and said, "I'm sorry to have embarrassed the Divine Envoy."
The green-robed divine messenger stood among the sedge and said with a smile, "Your magic of turning your breath into wind is quite advanced. It stirs up a chilling wind and terrifies the soul, yet it doesn't hurt anyone at all. Do you recognize these two boys?"
The red fox walked on the sedge as if on clouds. The tips of the sedge leaves sank slightly, but remained intact. "Thank you, angel of the gods, for your kind words. The one in green is Shen Qiao, the son of the owner of this place. The one in yellow is Chen Yan, the owner's nephew. I have a connection with the owner of this place, so I'm staying here for a while. That little devil Shen Qiao has tried to sneak in many times to see my true face, but I've always stopped him."
"Don't underestimate him because he's very young. He's quite cunning. He took advantage of his uncle's visit to trick his cousin into coming in to find out what's going on."
The green-robed divine messenger nodded and wrote down the four words "intelligent and quick-witted" with a pen.
The red-skinned fox led the green-clothed divine messenger into the building. All the furnishings were complete. Although a bit old, they were well organized and very clean.
"God's messenger, the assessment was disrupted by these two little devils. Please allow me to try again." The red-skinned fox requested.
The green-robed divine envoy nodded and said, "Please."
The red-skinned fox opened its long and slender mouth, and a clear bird song came out from its mouth. One kind of bird song never stopped, and another one came out again.
The various bird calls did not fade away, but complemented each other among the pavilions and echoed with each other, as if they were beautiful sounds from nature.
Even though it was the second time he saw it, the green-robed divine envoy could not help but be stunned, and then he wrote down on the paper: "Excellent talent".
After the concert of hundreds of birds ended, the red-skinned fox looked at the green-clothed divine messenger with anticipation.
The divine messenger smiled and announced, "Student Gong Mengbi is intelligent and quick-witted, has profound academic knowledge, knows the bird sounds of all lands and continents, and has mastered the art of breathing and controlling the wind. He can be rated as top-notch!"
Gong Mengbi was pleasantly surprised for a moment, rubbing his hands excitedly and saying, "Thank you, Divine Messenger."
The green-robed divine envoy said, "You don't need to thank me. It's because you've observed the precepts and cultivated yourself diligently, and you've made some small achievements. But don't let your guard down. I'm only responsible for the assessment. It won't be final until the Empress gives you her final say."
Seeing the little fox's face showing some trepidation, the green-robed divine envoy didn't mind flattering him and said soothingly, "You are the first among the students this year. According to past conventions, you are qualified to be promoted to an immortal official."
Gong Mengbi quickly thanked him: "Thank you, Divine Messenger."
He then took out the mugwort incense he had made and presented it to the emperor, saying, "This incense made from the mugwort in the courtyard, I hope it can relieve the fatigue of the divine messenger's boat and carriage. It is just a small thing, not worth much."
It was indeed just a small thing, just a token of appreciation, and it did not violate the priest's orders, so the green-robed divine envoy accepted it with a smile.
She put away the paper and pen and said, "See you next time. I hope there will be good news."
The messenger of God stepped onto the clouds and rose up, then turned into a majestic blue bird and soared up, then disappeared into the clouds in an instant.
Gong Mengbi watched the messenger leave before happily pacing around the building.
"Ten years have already passed in this world in the blink of an eye." Gong Mengbi sighed, "Being a fox is much harder than being a human."
In his previous life, he was just a stray fox. Luckily, he gained intelligence and knew some tricks of making evil spirits. Before he could go down the mountain to fool a few foolish men and women and find himself a henchman, he was frightened to death by a black dog.
He thus came back to life in the body of a fox and hid in an abandoned courtyard to avoid the dog attack.
If it weren't for the soul that traveled through time and space and brought a wishing tree with it, I'm afraid that he, a lone wild fox demon, might not have survived to this day.
The red fox with thin eyebrows and eyes exhaled a puff of smoke, which swirled around its body, and the fox transformed into a young man in red, with a handsome face and a slender figure. He had a bit of fairy-like aura, but also a bit of demonic nature.
