Chapter 114: Offering sacrifices to heaven and praying for good luck
The City God is the sky of Wuning County, and the god above Liu Sheng's head.
Although Liu Sheng had ruined his plan, seeing Liu Sheng's awe-inspiring look, he felt that all the burdens in his heart had disappeared, and he had more confidence in the following conversation.
Although Liu Sheng was just a mortal, a mere county lieutenant, he could control him, but if he refused to cooperate, it would cause some trouble for the City God.
Now it seems that even though this person's actions angered the gods, it was not intentional after all. He still respects and fears God in his heart.
The City God said, "Liu County Magistrate, please take a seat."
"When Liang Ji died of illness, I took pity on her youth and could not bear to see her die so young, so I took her in."
"It's just that humans and ghosts are different, so it's not easy for us to meet."
Liu Sheng said, "It is because of the kindness of the City God that we can meet again as siblings."
The City God smiled and said, "I asked you to come here today because, firstly, Liang Ji missed her family and became ill with worry, and I couldn't bear it. Secondly, I heard about what you did and wanted to give you some advice."
Liu Sheng looked at Liang Ji, and Liang Ji looked at him. Although she didn't say anything, Liu Sheng already understood her feelings.
Then he changed the subject and asked, "What did the City God say?"
The City God said, "Heaven sends disasters; this is destiny, not human will. While your relief efforts are a good deed, they defy Heaven's will and will only bring greater disaster."
Liu Sheng's heart was beating violently, as if a flame was burning.
A trace of panic crossed his thin face. "How can providing relief to the victims and quelling the flood be considered violating Heaven's will? I've heard that Heaven is merciful and compassionate. How could He sit idly by and watch the people become displaced and face imminent danger?"
The City God said, "The county magistrate abused his power for personal gain and perverted the law. This corrupt official has failed to uphold moral principles, angering Heaven and issuing a warning. Fate has destined the death of ten thousand refugees, as clearly recorded in the annals of life. Your order for relief may seem like saving lives, but it simply transfers the fate of the refugees onto other civilians."
"As long as the refugees don't die, the floods will continue. By then, the entire Wuning County will inevitably be plunged into an unprecedented disaster. The casualties will be more than just the refugees."
Liu Sheng's face was full of disbelief.
The City God said, "Don't think I'm trying to scare you. You've defied fate and committed a grave sin. Although you're alone, the wronged souls of your parents and relatives are already suffering in the underworld. If it weren't for my protection, Liang Ji would have been implicated as well."
The City God stretched out his hand and a ray of light fell into Liu Sheng's wine glass. "Look."
I saw the light shaking in the wine glass, and a picture of a mountain of swords and purgatory appeared.
The red flames burned the sharp blades red, and Liu Sheng's parents were pushed to walk on the mountain of knives, suffering from the pain of being cut by the blades and burned by the sea of fire.
Liu Sheng's face turned pale with rage. He said, "My parents have always done good deeds and accumulated virtue. Why have they suffered such a terrible crime?"
The City God sighed and said, "Your father and mother are naturally innocent, but you have defied Heaven's will, and your crime is unforgivable. Your parents are willing to bear the punishment on your behalf and atone for your sins."
"How pitiful are the hearts of parents in the world," the City God remarked. He then raised his eyes slightly to see Liu Sheng's reaction and said, "If you can't turn back from your mistakes, I'm afraid your father and mother's kindness will be in vain."
Liu Sheng's hands and feet were cold. He looked at Liang Ji, who was in tears, and then at the City God. He then bowed deeply and said, "Please teach me, City God."
The City God nodded with satisfaction.
The raindrops pattered down on the carriage.
The carriage swayed and arrived at the county government office.
Judge Wu smiled and invited Liu Sheng out, saying, "County Lieutenant Liu, we're here."
Liu Sheng was in a trance, his mind wandering. Following Judge Wu's instructions, he returned to the county government office.
But suddenly he shuddered and raised his head from the table, only to see that the light was still on and he was clearly sleeping at his desk.
He hurried out of the door, opened it and looked out, only to see a sleek big rat pulling a wooden basin running away into the distance, and it disappeared into the darkness in an instant.
Thinking of the horse and carriage in my dream, I suddenly felt it was ridiculous.
He closed the door, leaned against it without saying a word, his eyes staring straight into the void. There was a burning fire in his heart, burning him unhappy and making him want to go crazy.
What a great city god! What a great destiny!
The fire in his heart could not be relieved until it was vented, and the resentment in his chest could not be expressed until it was revealed.
Chi Xia appeared in the room and saw that he was about to burst out with excitement. He asked, "Brother Liu, has anything happened?"
Liu Sheng sneered, "Nothing has happened. It's just that the evil spirit is in power, insulting my parents and betraying the destiny, which makes my blood boil and my hands itch."
"Mr. Chi, why do ghosts and gods in this world have so many selfish desires just like humans?"
Chi Xia was silent for a moment, then said, "Ghosts and gods are also made by humans."
Liu Sheng's eyes flickered, "So that's how it is."
Seeing that he was very depressed, Chi Xia asked him the reason.
When he heard that the City God was secretly forcing Liu Sheng's parents, he sneered and said, "If he had such ability, he would not be the City God of a mere county."
"Corrupt officials are subject to the laws of the court, and so are ghosts and gods subject to the laws of heaven. If these things were to reach the underworld, the first person to be sent to the mountains of swords and the sea of fire would be the City God himself."
Liu Sheng said, "How should I deal with someone who insults my parents?"
Chi Xia laughed: "You already know the answer, so why ask me?"
Liu Sheng laughed, and the candlelight flickered in his eyes.
After dawn, Zeng Fan brought the refugees to look for Liu Sheng.
The refugees had two demands: one was to release food as relief, and the other was to offer sacrifices to the heavens to ward off bad weather.
Liu Sheng was already doing the former, and wealthy merchants were willing to help. The latter was the reason why Zeng Fan and the refugees came to find him.
The most important affairs of a country are sacrifices and wars, and sacrifices are the top priority.
But sacrifices also have status and ranks. The gods of heaven and earth were only offered by the emperor, while in Wuning County, offering sacrifices to the city god and the E-nü was already the highest level.
Liu Sheng's eyes moved slightly, and he said, "Since that's the case, let's offer sacrifices to the City God first."
Zeng Fan had no objection, as that was exactly why he came.
This grand ceremony soon began.
Prepare three sacrificial animals and recite sacrificial prayers.
