Chapter 272: Two Volumes of Buddhist Scriptures, Clash with the Gods
He is a small businessman who makes a living by doing some small business. Because he is hardworking and keeps his promises, he is trusted by his customers.
His business was booming, so he saved some money and married a virtuous and beautiful wife. He also wanted to earn more money and buy some land so that he could become a rich man.
The old lady of the Cui family in the county town was a devout believer in Buddhism. When she invited an eminent monk to her house to preach a few days ago, she heard that a man named Zhang in the neighboring county had two volumes of Buddhist scriptures from the Western Regions in his home. Unfortunately, Mr. Zhang's family fell into poverty due to an accident in his early years, and the two volumes of the true scriptures from the Western Regions were lost.
Mrs. Cui lamented and expressed regret, and announced that she was willing to pay a large sum of money to search for the two volumes of Buddhist scriptures.
Liu Wu had some friendship with the Cui family's purchasing manager. After hearing him talk about this, Liu Wu became interested.
Liu Wu was originally from a neighboring county, but later came to the county town to make a living.
Not only did he recognize Mr. Zhang, he even knew that after the Zhang family fell into poverty, all the manuscripts in the family were sold to a bookseller.
After several inquiries, Liu Wu finally found out the whereabouts of the bookseller and learned that the two volumes of Buddhist scriptures written in Western languages had been sold.
After many attempts and spending a large sum of money to find the person, he finally asked someone to buy back the two volumes of Buddhist scriptures.
Now that it is almost dawn, I will take the silver and money to the dock for delivery.
After the payment was made, Liu Wu carefully put the Buddhist scriptures into his arms and returned to the city.
Having arrived early, it was still dawn as he returned. As he walked along, thinking about the bountiful reward he would receive if he presented the Buddhist scripture to the Cui family, Liu Wu nearly laughed out loud.
Before the smile on his face faded, he was suddenly hit hard on the back of his head.
Liu Wu stumbled and fell to the ground, seeing stars and having a splitting headache. He opened his mouth to call for help, but the people behind him were merciless and hit him on the head with several clubs.
With a snap, the stick broke.
Liu Wu was already dead, blood gushing out from his head and spreading out in the mud.
The broken stick was thrown on the ground, and the hand holding the stick was shaking violently. The man could be heard gasping for breath. He quickly turned Liu Wu over, dug into his chest, took out the two volumes of Buddhist scriptures, and ran towards the city without looking back.
Liu Wu's face was covered in mud and his eyes were covered in blood as he stared at the gray sky.
The blood-spattered hand grabbed the Buddhist scripture with a blood-stained cover and entered the city. He washed the blood off his hands and wiped off the blood stains on the cover.
The blood on the hands was easy to wash off, but the blood on the cover just dried, leaving a dark red corner.
The two Buddhist scriptures were sent to the Cui family and placed in front of the old lady of the Cui family.
The old lady stroked the two volumes of Buddhist scriptures, delighted, a smile on her face unstoppable. Even though the scriptures were old, even though the covers seemed to have been stained with blood, even though the densely packed Western characters on them were neither legible nor decipherable to her, the Buddha images depicted in the scriptures were real, and the symbols of Buddhism were also real.
The old lady smiled and said, "I heard that this Buddhist scripture contains Buddhist teachings from the Western Regions, which are quite effective. I have long wanted to learn about its mysteries, but the scripture was lost and I couldn't find it for a long time. Fortunately, the Buddha opened my eyes, and after a twist of fate, we are finally destined to meet again."
The old lady looked at the young man who was bowing in front of the hall and asked, "You are destined to receive this scripture. Tell me, what reward do you want?"
The young man fell to his knees and kowtowed, saying, "Please help me, old lady."
The old lady frowned slightly, and her heart sank.
The young man said, "My father owned a tavern in the city, and originally had a small fortune. But yesterday, I was tricked into entering a gambling den, where they set me up and I lost everything, including my wife. The old lady is so kind-hearted, and I beg you to help me. I will repay your kindness, even if it means sacrificing a favor."
The old lady looked at the butler who was waiting beside her. The butler frowned slightly and asked, "Which gambling house did you lose in?"
The young man said, "Fugui Gambling House."
The housekeeper's brows relaxed, and he looked at the old lady and nodded slightly.
The old lady smiled and said, "It was this Buddhist scripture that saved you. Since this is fate, housekeeper, you should go and speak on his behalf."
The housekeeper bowed and said, "Yes, old lady."
The housekeeper asked him to go back first, and within half a day, the people from the gambling house had left his house.
Before leaving, the gambling house manager looked at the young man and said with a smile, "So the young master is actually friends with the Cui family. How disrespectful!"
The steward slapped himself lightly on the face twice and said, "Apologize to the young master."
The young master's eyes were red as he looked at the steward without saying a word.
The manager chuckled and led his men away.
The young master suddenly laughed wildly.
The old shopkeeper asked, "How did you get involved with the Cui family?"
The young master said proudly: "Dad, I'm lucky, I'm very lucky!"
The old shopkeeper looked at him and felt that he was becoming more and more unfamiliar. He advised: "What kind of luck is this?"
The young master closed the door tightly and said, "I have divine help. It is God who is helping me."
The old shopkeeper became more and more worried: "What god?"
The young master said, "Five-way God!"
It was as if a chilling wind had blown up from nowhere, sending a chill through the old shopkeeper, trembling in his heart: "Are you crazy? How dare you worship Wutong!"
Seeing him like that, the young master felt a surge of anger in his heart and said, "Why wouldn't I dare? If I don't pray to the Five Gods, how can I protect my family property and Huan'er?"
The old shopkeeper said earnestly, "It's easy to invite a deity, but hard to send it away. Although the Five-Directional God is effective, once it comes to haunt you, you'll not only lose your family fortune, but you might even lose your life..."
Before he could finish his words, he suddenly slipped and fell to the ground. He was immediately speechless due to the pain.
The young master was startled and angrily said, "How dare you offend the gods!"
The old shopkeeper could hardly stand up, but the young master slammed the door and left without even looking back.
Huan'er heard them arguing and hurried out, only to see her father-in-law lying on the ground groaning.
She quickly helped the old shopkeeper up, and saw him crying. He looked at Huan'er and said, "I was wrong. I shouldn't have let you marry that evil creature."
Huan'er said, "Dad, what are you talking about? My father died early. If it weren't for you taking care of us, an orphan and a widow, we would have died somewhere long ago."
The old shopkeeper felt increasingly guilty. He glanced around carefully and whispered to Huan'er, "Run, run! I heard there are immortals in Jinhua Mountain. Take the money and go to Jinhua Mountain! It will be too late if you don't run now!"
Huan'er looked at the old shopkeeper, who didn't dare mention the name of Wutongshen again and just told her to leave quickly.
Huan'er couldn't persuade him, so she had to take some silver and go out.
But she had just walked out of the door and hadn't gone far when she started spinning in circles for some reason.
At dusk, the young master came back and saw Huan'er wandering around. He asked, "Huan'er, why are you here?"
