Chapter 779 Rouge Bone
The crows returning home at dusk were heard in the forest, the evening breeze blew the mist, and the setting sun flowed like blood.
Gong Mengbi raised his head from the fox house and looked towards the dusk. Birdsong came from the wind and shouted:
"Sigh! Sigh!"
"Sigh! Sigh!"
Gong Mengbi's eyelids twitched and his expression gradually turned cold.
"Since ancient times, love has always been in vain, while betrayal brings glory."
The birds cried and whimpered, as if jackals, tigers and leopards were roaring in the mountains.
The evening breeze grew stronger and stronger, whistling in with the smell of blood.
"A knife in a smile cuts the skin and flesh, a needle in a cotton ball plucks the marrow and pulls out the tendons."
"Cut off the fox's head, chop off its toes, peel off my skin, and take the pearl from my mouth."
"Sigh! Sigh!"
"Bare rouge bones, tightly sewn soft golden fur coat."
"Why was I born? Why am I chasing after the mundane world?"
"Sad cry!"
The mist in the forest turned into a cloud covering the sky, and the setting sun was as red as blood, casting a dark red glow.
The foxes in the Fox Courtyard all noticed something was wrong and stuck their heads out to look. They saw the setting sun shrouded in fog, which did not look like the human world but more like the underworld.
Gong Mengbi walked out of the Fox Courtyard, wearing a white gauze inner garment and a red shirt. He saw yellow smoke pouring out from the middle of the Fox Hill. Fox-shaped phantoms rose and fell in the yellow smoke, all covered in blood, and their heads and claws could not be seen clearly.
"Sad cry!"
I could only hear the birds chirping as they returned to their nests, but I couldn't hear the foxes chirping.
A fox dressed in white emerged from the yellow smoke, threw itself before Gong Mengbi, and begged, "Mr. Gong, please avenge this blood feud for our Haozhou Fox Courtyard!"
Gong Mengbi felt a pang of pain in his heart and said, "Rest in peace. I will go to Haozhou personally to deal with this matter."
In the yellow smoke, the fox ghost kowtowed, and with a bow, the yellow dust dissipated and the smoke curled up.
Only a crow flapped its wings and flew over. Gong Mengbi caught it with his hand and it landed on his arm.
The crow looked at Gong Mengbi and said, "Mr. Gong, Fairy Qingyao ordered me to pass on a message: poison the fox fairy and slaughter the fox cubs. Report immediately!"
At first, the crow spoke in a hoarse and old voice, but when it delivered the words of Fairy Qingyao, its voice became as crisp as Qingyi, exactly the same as Fairy Qingyao.
Gong Mengbi met the crow's sidelong gaze and said, "If there is no retribution, why offer sacrifices to the fox ghost in heaven?"
The crow cawed loudly, stepped on Gong Mengbi's arm, flapped its wings and flew up, shouting "How sad!" and then disappeared into the dense forest.
The fog had cleared and the sun had already set.
The melted red flowed in the clouds and solidified into a blood-red river.
The five ghosts hurried over and, sensing Gong Mengbi's deep depression, they prostrated themselves on the ground and said, "My lord, I am late. I wonder what has happened?"
Gong Mengbi was silent for a moment and said, "It's just a matter of life and death. I've seen a lot of it." As he spoke, he turned around and walked towards the fox yard.
The five ghosts looked at each other and hurried after him, but they could never catch up.
When they arrived at the fox house, they saw that the doors and windows were closed and there were crackling sounds coming from inside.
The lantern messenger squeezed out from the crack in the door. Mr. Qing picked up the flattened meat pie and asked in a low voice, "Fat ghost, what's going on in there?"
The Fat Ghost shook his head and said, "My Lord's expression frightened me to death. I really don't dare to stay any longer."
Several retainers were outside in a state of panic, but things quickly calmed down inside the fox house.
Not long after, Gong Mengbi pushed open the door and said, "Mr. Qing, go to Xima Mountain and call Fuxin and the Skull God."
"Lightkeeper, prepare the incense."
Mr. Qing released his hand, and the Fat Ghost fell to the ground. The two men clasped their fists and bowed, each accepting their orders.
Gong Mengbi returned to the fox house, and the four Chigui followed him in. After cleaning up the messy main room, they stood by in front of the quiet room.
The lamplighter had already brought the incense and placed it neatly on the table. The red pearl in the small golden censer flickered, and the red light shone through the carved fox patterns and reflected on Gong Mengbi's closed eyes.
When he opened his eyes again, he could no longer see the waves. "Go out."
The fat ghost bowed and left the quiet room.
Gong Mengbi selected the finest incense to offer to the Goddess of Mount Tai and the Jade Fairy Goddess, saying, "Your Highness and Goddess, I will be going to Haozhou for revenge. If I have done anything inappropriate, please forgive me."
The incense quickly burned out on the Sun Pearl, and the smoke rose along the statue and then disappeared into the void.
Gong Mengbi bowed, then moved the small golden furnace aside and threw another soul-summoning incense into the furnace.
Smoke billowed, and Wei Dapan slowly emerged from the smoke. Seeing Gong Mengbi, he offered his condolences. "Mercy," he said. "Life and death, while not entirely predetermined by fate, are inseparable from cause and effect."
Gong Mengbi sighed and said, "The Grand Judge is really not very good at comforting people. You are the Director of Yin and Yang, and you deal with matters of life and death. In your eyes, life and death are different from theirs."
Wei Dapan was speechless for a moment, but he had to admit that what Gong Mengbi said made sense.
He had seen too much of the cycle of life and death. So many atrocities, so many things that were abhorrent to both humans and gods, would eventually turn to dust. In Wei Dapan's eyes, there was no absolute distinction between life and death.
But for those little foxes, life is life, and death is death. Perhaps the boundary between life and death is not unbreakable, but it must exist and is crucial.
This is true for all living things.
Wei Dapan said, "I made a mistake."
Gong Mengbi shook his head and said, "The judge is thoughtful. I asked the judge to come here because of this matter, so I asked for your help."
"Please go ahead."
"I want to go to Haozhou. I wonder what the background of the Haozhou City God is?"
Wei Dapan said, "The City God of Haozhou, this one is no ordinary person."
"I'd like to hear more about it."
"You know that the Dagan City God is different from all previous dynasties."
"I've heard the Lord mention before that the City Gods of the world are in charge of matters of yin and yang, and are overseen by the Capital City God of the World, who is appointed by the Queen Mother of Earth. The Capital City God of the World is currently appointed by the Emperor, and all other City Gods in the world are appointed by imperial decree."
"Indeed, all the city gods in the world today are appointed by imperial decree. Among them are wise ministers from the past, meritorious officials from the present, and people of great virtue. The city god of Haozhou is not a commoner under the rule of the Great Gan, but an ancient prince, Tong Kang, also known as King Zhongli."
"Haozhou is under the jurisdiction of the City God of the prefecture, but the City God of Haozhou is an ancient king. He is relatively rare among all the City Gods in the world. But to you, it makes no difference." Wei Dapan said meaningfully.
Gong Mengbi bowed and said, "Thank you very much, Great Judge. I hope my trip goes well."
Wei Dapan laughed and said, "How could it go wrong if you personally take action?"
Wei Dapan's figure gradually faded in the smoke, and his voice also slowly faded away.
"The affairs of Haozhou are not difficult for you. It's just that some of the personnel involved require careful decision-making."
Gong Mengbi did not ask, and Wei Dapan only reminded him, so his words were vague.
But he specifically pointed out that Gong Mengbi was naturally alert.
