Chapter 22: Repaying a Favor
Granny Shi happily came to greet them, saying, "I was watching the battle at Ruyun Peak last night. I saw red light rising into the sky and white frost covering the ground. But you were still the most capable, silently and unnoticed, eliminating a disaster without a trace."
Gong Mengbi couldn't stand the praise and said modestly, "It's just an illusion. How could I have such a skill?"
"It's an illusion. The more silent it is, the more thrilling it is, and the more brilliant it is." Granny Shi became more and more satisfied as she watched. "Young friend Mengbi, are you married?"
Gong Mengbi shuddered and became extremely alert: "It's true that I've never been married, but I'm devoted to cultivation, so I'm not a good match."
Seeing him politely decline with a smile, Granny Shi said, "Indeed, a talent like you would be wasting your talent if you were to indulge in romantic relationships."
"Since I settled in Ruyun Peak, I've trained some promising young people, but they're definitely not worthy of you. What a pity."
Gong Mengbi said, "No, Granny Shi, please don't embarrass me."
But I felt relieved.
I never expected that being a fox would also be urged to get married, and was even almost arranged to go on a blind date.
Granny Shi had no idea where his thoughts had wandered, so she congratulated him on getting what he wanted: "You saved the golden toad, so finding a cave on Wuhuan Peak shouldn't be a problem, right?"
Speaking of this, Gong Mengbi wanted to smile bitterly: "It's my fault for not listening to Granny Shi's plan and ruining this."
Granny Shi asked curiously, "What do you mean?"
Gong Mengbi told Jin Chan that he had warned him in advance and proposed a deal but was rejected.
"Even though he rejected me, I couldn't just stand by and watch him die. But he's a very suspicious person. He thought I was trying to repay a favor and control him, and he was pretending to abandon Wuhuan Peak and run away."
Granny Shi sighed, "You're unwilling to repay a favor, but he's being mean-spirited. What's the point of this?"
Gong Mengbi said, "So forget it. He's naturally suspicious. If we were to live on the same peak, I'm afraid there would be a lot of conflict."
Granny Shi asked, "So you're going to find another place to practice cultivation?"
"There's no other way." Gong Mengbi was not discouraged. "I'll find a mountain with abundant vitality and manage it carefully. It won't be worse than Wuhuan Peak."
Granny Shi hesitated a bit, but still invited him, "You are my relative. Ruyun Peak is vast. If you don't mind, you can open a cave here."
Gong Mengbi declined, "Ruyun Peak is a treasured place, but I can't stand loneliness. I'm afraid it will ruin Granny Shi's meditation."
Granny Shi didn't try to persuade her any further.
Gong Mengbi changed the subject and talked about the Red Feathered Snake: "I helped the Red Feathered Snake survive the fire disaster, but his Dao heart was damaged, and he was anxious to return to consolidate his foundation. He asked me to greet you and said he would come to visit you after he came out of seclusion."
Granny Shi gave a look of astonishment. "It's not the little snake's fault. The tiger is obsessed with him, and it's hard to stop him even if we guard against him day and night. Although I'm good at divination, I don't have the ability to predict what will happen to the tiger. I can only warn him in advance, but when his Yin Fire consumes him, I'm afraid he won't remember anything I said."
"But now the Red Feathered Snake is nothing to worry about. I believe the tiger will be quiet for a while." Although Granny Shi said this, her expression did not reduce her worry.
Gong Mengbi asked, "Then the mountain king gathered his people and declared himself king, and no one is doing anything to stop him?"
Granny Shi said, "Care? Who will? There's no mountain god in Longpan Mountain, and even if there was, it wouldn't necessarily care. He's declared himself king in the mountains, and the City God won't care. As long as he's not stupid enough to attack the City God Temple, who would care if he came down the mountain and grabbed a few people to eat?"
"In this world today, we can't even wipe out the bandits among humans, let alone the bandits among demons."
Gong Mengbi was silent for a moment and didn't know what to say.
Granny Shi was also emotional for a moment, and after she finished speaking, she realized that she had overreacted: "At my age, I still can't change my bad habits."
Gong Mengbi said, "You are kind-hearted, so you would sigh like this."
Granny Shi shook her head and changed the subject, "If you find a place you like, you must tell me. I will go to celebrate the day you open your mansion."
Gong Mengbi also smiled: "I will definitely inform the senior."
Grandma Shi was not in a good mood, so Gong Mengbi did not bother her any more and went back to Zhuling.
The Sparrow Fairy had already been waiting for him at Zhuling: "Gong Mengbi, I told Jin Chan that you don't want Wuhuan Peak."
Gong Mengbi breathed a sigh of relief: "So he went back?"
"No, he followed."
Not far away, Jin Chan came over with a bundle under his arm and said angrily, "Why don't you want Wu Huan Peak?"
Gong Mengbi said, "That's where you practice. Since you don't like living with others, why should I take away what others love?"
"No!" Jin Chan said, "I've already planned to move out of Wuhuan Peak. Wuhuan Peak is yours."
Gong Mengbi said, "Why are you so angry? I saved you out of my own conscience. It has nothing to do with you."
Jin Chan angrily said, "How could you be so difficult! If you don't want Wuhuan Peak, you must be after something more important. Are you attracted to my body? Do you want me to repay you with my life?"
Gong Mengbi was shocked and asked, "Why do you think so?"
Jin Chan asked, "Then why don't you want Wuhuan Peak?"
Gong Mengbi said: "That is your place of cultivation, which is in harmony with your practice. I will not take away what you love."
Jin Chan widened his amber eyes and looked at Gong Mengbi fiercely: "Alright! I won't let you succeed! I will move back to Jingtan, but you have to go to Wuhuan Peak too. I must repay you for saving my life!"
Gong Mengbi was obscured by the huge figure approaching him. He opened his mouth but didn't know how to answer.
Jin Chan is so afraid of being entangled in gratitude, but he doesn't know that his choice will only deepen his fate with Gong Mengbi.
The precious certificate on the wishing tree is proof of this.
Gong Mengbi still wanted to struggle: "You are so suspicious and vigilant. Living on the same peak, we hate each other. How torturous it is."
Jin Chan turned his head and stared at Gong Mengbi with his big eyes: "I live in Jingtan, you live in the mountains, I won't see you!"
The Sparrow Fairy chuckled loudly: "Gong Mengbi, he is determined to repay your kindness, what will you do?"
Gong Mengbi didn't know what to do.
He had imagined living together in the immortal mountains and practicing cultivation, making friends, discussing Taoism and appreciating flowers, rather than the current situation.
But if he refused again, Jin Chan would probably fight him to the death.
It's really unreasonable.
In the end, Gong Mengbi went to Wuhuan Peak.
Jin Chan followed Gong Mengbi without moving, as if he was guarding a prisoner, afraid that he would escape.
The sparrow fairy was overjoyed at the back.
And so I returned to Wuhuan Peak.
After the commotion at Wuhuan Peak last night, other places were fine except for the area around Jingtan, where the ground was scorched and all the vegetation had been destroyed by the Red Feathered Snake.
A lot of fish and shrimps in Jingtan were dead, floating on the water with their stomachs turned upside down. Among them were many of the silver star fish that Grandma Shi mentioned.
Jin Chan was both angry and heartbroken: "Jingtan belongs to me. You should find another place to practice, preferably as far away from me as possible."
Gong Mengbi said, "Let me help you clean up the Mirror Pond first."
Jin Chan said, "No need. Don't try to get close to me. I won't fall for it."
"Come on, I'll do it myself."
