Chapter 31, Is this the Governor?
Hodgson really didn't know that one of their Alliance Council members, Vaughan, was a cult member.
He had no idea of this information beforehand.
Now that Gu Hang had revealed the truth, he was completely stunned.
When he came to his senses a little, his first reaction was to doubt: Was the Governor making up the story about Wohan being a cultist as an excuse to cause trouble for Renaissance City?
"This matter is of great importance. Governor, do you have any evidence to prove this?"
"The evidence is irrefutable. The people who attacked the transport team were instructed by Wohan. I eliminated the gangsters in his manor and arrested him. I saw with my own eyes that this guy used the storm magic..."
"You seem to know nothing now, Speaker Hodgson. I am very disappointed. A member of the Alliance has been corrupted, and you, as the Speaker, have no information at all. Is this a dereliction of duty, or has the Alliance Parliament itself been condoning the spread of cults in Renaissance City?"
Hodgson immediately denied it: "Absolutely not! We have been strengthening our crackdown on cults. How could we condone the spread of cults? I will investigate this matter..."
Before Hodgson could finish his words, he was interrupted by Gu Hang: "Investigation? If you guys continue to investigate, what will happen to Fuxing City? Even members of parliament can be corrupted, how can I believe that you can find out anything?"
Hodgson was driven into a state of panic by Gu Hang's pressure.
This completely unexpected news caught him off guard. He had no plan for the situation, so he could only bite the bullet and say, "We will definitely take effective measures to deal with this problem. We will conduct background checks on all council members and step up efforts to investigate cults throughout the city."
Gu Hang said: "I'll give you this chance. But I also want to remind you that our city is facing a serious threat. I want you to solve this problem as quickly and thoroughly as possible! If I don't see a more positive attitude from you, then I will take action myself and hold you accountable for it."
Hodgson could only try to assure: "We will do our best and take all necessary measures to ensure the safety of the city. I promise you that we will give you an explanation."
"You'd better keep your word."
…
After hanging up the phone, Hodgson frowned tightly.
He didn't want to be the weaker party every time he communicated with the Governor.
However, what else could he do?
The first time they came to ask for supplies, they used the Governor's authority to request allocation. The amount was not small, but it was not unaffordable. They stuck to the limit of Fuxing City's ability to pay, so they had to accept it. No one wanted to completely offend the Governor and fall out with him for such a small amount of supplies.
The second time was when Wohan attacked the transport team without authorization. This was his own act, and Hodgson sold him without any psychological pressure.
On both occasions, the Governor had hinted that he was using his authority and orbital bombardment to exert extreme pressure and threaten someone in order to get something. At this point, if Hodgson didn't want to fall out, he had no choice but to compromise.
And this third time, although the Governor did not make too many threats and did not ask for anything, his tone was the harshest this time, directly accusing the Alliance Parliament of either dereliction of duty or being a traitor.
The topic was firmly in his hands.
But Hodgson couldn't refute it.
This time the Governor was in a commanding position.
The Primordial Owl Beast Cult is the public enemy of many forces in the wasteland. They do not believe in the God-Emperor, but instead believe in the so-called "Primordial Owl Beast"; they master the evil magic of storms, and have actually created many tragedies that destroyed gathering places.
How do you explain that a coalition member of parliament is actually a member of this cult?
It doesn't make sense at all!
The Governor-General's anger was justified.
He thought he had just sold out a greedy grain merchant. If that guy wanted to go against the governor, he should be the target. He deserved to die. But this guy turned out to be a member of a cult, which was completely unexpected for Hodgson.
He also realized the seriousness of the matter.
After hesitating for a moment, old Hodgson turned to his grandson Lambert and asked, "The Governor said that Vaughan is a cult member. Do you think it is possible?"
"Maybe it's true, maybe it's false." Lambert Hodgson listened to the entire conversation between his grandfather and the governor. He carefully gave his own answer. "But this matter is not critical now. Since the governor used this as a handle to provoke him, it means he must have some evidence. Even if the evidence is not true, the governor must have forged it well enough. We are really passive now."
In response to Lambert's speculation, Old Hodgson sighed and continued to ask: "So what do you think the Governor will do next?"
Lambert considered, "He might use this as an excuse to further intervene in the political situation of Renaissance City. In the name of combating the cult, he will deprive us of our power and then take control of the entire Renaissance City."
"From what you said, it seems that you are very dissatisfied with this?"
Lambert was stunned.
"Grandfather?" He didn't understand why his grandfather asked that.
"The Governor is the planetary ruler appointed by the Empire and the head of the Union Government. Isn't it legitimate and reasonable for the Governor to take complete control of Renaissance City?"
Lambert frowned tightly and said with difficulty: "You...you are saying...but..."
Old Hodgson talked about another thing: "I remember you said your ideal is to save the world?"
"...Yes, it was the nonsense I spoke when I was young and frivolous..."
"Then let me ask you now, is this ideal still buried in your heart?"
Lambert didn't want to answer: "Grandpa, why are you talking about this?"
"I told you that only a governor can save the world. I didn't know if it was this Governor Gu, so I was hesitant, just like the previous governors, who all failed. But I recently figured out a question: How many more governors can we wait for?"
"I don't understand... Could it be that you want to?"
"No, it hasn't come to that. I just think this governor is a little different from the previous ones." Old Hodgson said, "As for now, I think you have missed the point."
"Please teach me."
"The focus now is not what the Governor will do next, but what we should do. What we should do is also very simple. We should find out how serious the spread of the original Owlbeast Sect is in Renaissance City and what their purpose is. This is the most important thing. It is a matter of life and death. What is the point of intrigue? It would be ridiculous to defeat the Governor and then let the cult destroy the city."
"I see!"
