Chapter Eight: My Uncle's Report

When I left the fifth construction site, it was already 4 p.m. The last bus back was at 5 p.m. If I didn't go back to the bus station soon, I would miss the bus back.

The two walked back to the bus stop they had come from, based on their memory. When they saw the bus stop in the distance, Xu Heping suddenly exclaimed "Huh!" and tugged at Xu An.

“The man in the striped shirt looks familiar to me; he seems to be your uncle.”

Xu An looked in the direction Xu Heping was pointing and indeed saw a man wearing a brown striped shirt. He was tall and thin, like a bamboo pole, and his normal clothes looked loose and baggy on him, like a sack. Coupled with his pointed mouth and monkey-like face, it was easy to tell at a glance that this man was his uncle.

In my memory, my uncle-in-law always worked at the garment factory. Today is a weekday, so why is he here? It's more than half an hour away from the garment factory.

My uncle stood at the bus stop, looking at the two pieces of paper in his hand with a complicated expression. After some hesitation, he tore off a corner of one of them, crumpled the rest, threw it in the trash can, boarded the bus, and disappeared from Xu An's sight.

Xu An quickly took two steps forward, picked up the wad of paper that his uncle had thrown into the trash can, and unfolded it.

"They already threw it in the trash can, why did you pick it up? What does it say on it? Shanghai Second People's Hospital. Is your uncle feeling unwell?"

Xu Heping was disgusted by Xu An's behavior, but unable to suppress his curiosity, he leaned closer to see the contents of the paper.

Sperm test report: ..., sperm count 0, diagnosed as azoospermia.

Xu An crumpled the paper into a ball and stuffed it into his pocket. Xu Heping was too fast to react and didn't see anything other than the hospital's name.

At this moment, Xu An was internally devastated. Only when the sperm count in semen is zero can one be diagnosed with azoospermia. Azoospermia meant that his uncle would never be able to have a child of his own blood.

In her past life, whose child was the one her aunt was pregnant with? Her uncle had undergone examinations and knew about his condition, so he must have known that the child her aunt gave birth to wasn't his.

The sheer volume of information overwhelmed Xu An's brain, making it difficult for him to process it all.

After calming himself down, Xu An began to consider other possibilities.

The name on the form has been torn off, so it cannot be confirmed that this medical report is definitely from my uncle.

Perhaps this is a medical report from my uncle's friend or colleague, and he was simply asked to pick it up.

Perhaps this was a report that someone else had abandoned, and it just so happened that my uncle-in-law found it.

perhaps......

Xu An had come up with countless reasons in his mind for his uncle's behavior, but he himself couldn't believe these reasons.

When my younger cousin was three years old, my uncle mentioned while he was drunk at dinner that my cousin was not his biological son, but he didn't care.

Among those eating there were people from the village who had left, and the rumor spread throughout the village, which Xu An had also heard about.

But my aunt and uncle usually got along normally, and there was nothing wrong with them. In addition, Xu Kang and Xu Le were still at their house, so everyone thought that my aunt's husband was confused and called Xu Kang his cousin, so they didn't take it to heart.

But now that he has seen this report and recalled the rumor, Xu An finds it hard not to believe that the rumor is true.

This was the first time in his two lifetimes that he had encountered such a fresh and hot piece of gossip. Xu An was in a daze the whole way. This was even more unacceptable than his rebirth back to fifteen years ago.

Shortly after Xu An and his companion left by car, the uncle-in-law reappeared at the bus stop.

Holding his nose, he rummaged through the trash can, muttering to himself, "I've only been gone a few minutes, how come I can't find it? Could it have been picked up by a scavenger? They'd take such a small piece of paper, they must be desperate for money."

It was already past 5 p.m. when I got home.

Unlike usual, Xu Andu went into the yard today, but Xu Kang and Xu Le only turned their heads to look at him before continuing to play in the sand, their aggrieved expressions impossible to ignore.

Xu An squatted down next to the two of them, and they both turned their bodies around, turning the backs of their heads towards him.

"What's wrong with Kang Kang and Le Le? Don't you want to see your brother?"

Xu An was met with two synchronized 'humphs'.

"Let me guess why you don't want to see your brother. Is it because he went out without you and you're unhappy?"

The two didn't exchange a word, so it seems that wasn't the reason.

"Is it because your brother came back too late and you're hungry that you don't want to talk to him?"

There was still no reply.

Xu An recalled that although Xu Kang and Xu Le were children, they rarely threw tantrums for no reason. The two must have encountered something and needed their older brother's help or comfort, but he wasn't there, so they were sulking.

Then I remembered the scene yesterday afternoon when the two of them woke up from a nightmare, crying their eyes out and wanting me to hug them.

Did I have another nightmare?

Xu An reached out and pulled the two small children in front of him into his arms, asking in a low voice, "Did you have another nightmare?"

Upon hearing this, the two, who looked aggrieved, had tears welling up in their eyes. They clung tightly to Xu An's arm and nodded pitifully.

"Did you dream of that old witch again?"

The two nodded in unison again, correcting Xu An's words.

"Not only the old witch, but I also dreamt of the old demon king. The old demon king was so tall, like a bamboo pole. He was holding a bamboo pole in his hand, standing next to the old witch, and he would hit us with the bamboo pole whenever we were hungry and wanted to eat."
