Chapter Twenty-One: There's a Traitor Inside!

As the saying goes, good fortune never comes in pairs, but misfortunes never come singly.

Today, not only is the competition fiercer, but there are also fewer workers out consuming, resulting in only slightly more than half the usual foot traffic.

With the additional traffic from the numerous shops across the street and the stalls next door, Xu An had only sold 32 boxed meals by 1 p.m., leaving 8 unsold.

Xu Heping looked anxious at the large number of boxed lunches left and pulled Xu Kang and Xu Le to try and attract customers. These usually infallible methods were surprisingly ineffective today.

It took half an hour to attract three people, and with the four customers who came on their own, there was still one serving left.

It's already 2 o'clock. Most of those who wanted to come out to spend money have already done so. The rest have already eaten at the factory canteen and won't be coming out. It's about time to close up shop.

Fortunately, we decided to reduce the number of orders by ten yesterday, otherwise we would be in real trouble with eleven orders left, and we would have lost a whole day's income.

What comforted Xu An was that despite so many competitors, his own stall still had the highest foot traffic, and many regular customers still chose his stall.

It's only been a little over a week since it was set up, and the number of regular customers is quite limited. Relying solely on regular customers is barely enough to survive; we need to find new sales channels.

After all, he and his grandmother had a 20,000 yuan agreement, which couldn't be fulfilled by relying solely on regular customers.

Perhaps because of the increased competition, on the way back, Xu Heping no longer chatted with Xu An as he usually did. Instead, he was very silent, his eyes filled with worry as he looked at Xu An, as if he was afraid that Xu An might do something rash.

"Peace, do I look that fragile?" Xu An asked leisurely after Xu Heping turned around again.

"Huh?" Xu Heping was a little confused.

"You've looked back at me eight hundred times along the way. Even the dog lying by the roadside knows you're worried about me."

"With such intense competition all of a sudden, how can I not be worried?"

"You thought it was incredible that we sold thirty servings on our first day at the stall, but now you're not satisfied with selling thirty-nine servings a day. Your ambitions have grown," Xu An joked.

"How about we make thirty servings tomorrow?" Xu Heping suggested instead of replying to the previous question.

“No, I plan to make sixty servings tomorrow,” Xu An shook his head.

'Squeak!'

With a long screech of brakes, Xu Heping's bicycle came to a stop sideways in front of Xu An's tricycle. He stared at Xu An with disbelief: "Are you crazy?"

Fortunately, Xu An had been paying attention to the road conditions ahead and applied the brakes in time, preventing Xu Heping from being blown off course by a single wheel.

"I think you're the one who's crazy. Parking sideways in the middle of the road, what if there's a motorcycle behind you? We'd all be done for," Xu An said irritably.

"I'm just too surprised," Xu Heping said with a smile, then his expression turned serious as he asked earnestly, "Were you joking or serious when you said you'd make sixty servings tomorrow?"

“Seriously. Tomorrow I’m going to make sixty boxed meals, but not all of them will be sold at the Zijing Garden construction site.”

? ?

Two big question marks appeared in Xu Heping's eyes. Why did he feel like he couldn't understand what Xu An was saying?

"I plan to split up tomorrow. You'll take thirty boxed meals to sell at the Zijing Garden construction site, and I'll take the remaining thirty to sell at other construction sites."

"Which of the other construction sites are you planning to go to?"

"The first construction site we inspected was the Haishi Library construction site. There were two smaller construction sites next to it, and there were also residential areas nearby. Although the competition was fierce, the customer traffic was much greater, so it was a promising opportunity."

"What if our lunchboxes aren't popular over there?"

“Then I’ll go to another construction site.” Xu An kicked Xu Heping’s bicycle: “Are you going or not? Don’t block the way.”

“I think the Zijing Garden construction site is pretty good; selling thirty servings a day is not bad.” Xu Heping still didn’t quite understand Xu An’s choice, muttering to himself as he rode.

If it weren't for the agreement with his grandmother, Xu An wouldn't mind continuing to laze around on this construction site.

But this agreement concerns whether his younger siblings can stay by his side, so he naturally can't just sit idly by.

It's not good to tell Xu Heping about this agreement, otherwise, if Xu Heping gets anxious, he might even steal fish from his own fishpond to raise 20,000 yuan for him.

Today, every worker who steps into the canteen wants to beat drums and gongs to express their joy.

Rice reappeared in the cafeteria after a two-week hiatus. The dishes were surprisingly twice-cooked pork and minced pork with pickled green beans, both very appetizing.

Even more surprisingly, there was a daily soup! Seaweed and egg drop soup!

As usual, Qiao Guoxing first bought a boxed lunch from Xu An's stall at the entrance of the construction site before heading towards the construction site canteen.

Before even reaching the cafeteria entrance, the aroma of food wafting from inside filled the air.

Looking out the window, I was surprised to find that today's meal consisted of twice-cooked pork and minced pork with pickled green beans.

After looking at the food in the cafeteria and then at the boxed lunch in his hand, Qiao Guoxing suddenly felt a little annoyed. If he had known the cafeteria food would be so plentiful today, why would he have spent eight yuan on a boxed lunch?

"I'll come to the cafeteria after work tomorrow to see what's on the menu before deciding whether to go out and buy a boxed lunch!"

When they got their food and were waiting for their wives to come over so they could eat together, the two of them first took a bite of the cafeteria food.

It's not bad, but it just feels like the flavor is a little off.

After taking a bite of the food prepared by Xu Anjia, yes, that's the taste!

The two men reached for their lunchboxes more and more frequently with their chopsticks, until they finally stopped at the last piece of braised pork, neither of them willing to let go.
