Chapter 23

Chapter 23

Summer vacation is over.

Before they knew it, it was time for the start of the new school year. Mo Yun and Yang Hui took a car back to school together.

After getting off the bus at the school gate, the two waved goodbye, one heading east and the other west. They were majoring in different fields, and their dormitories were quite far apart.

Speaking of which, Yang Hui was luckier. Her dormitory building was newly built a few years ago and had an elevator, a balcony, and a bathroom. Mo Yun, on the other hand, was unfortunately assigned to a small, dilapidated building. She lived on the sixth floor and there was no elevator or private bathroom.

"call."

Mo Yun carried her suitcase and struggled up to the sixth floor, almost dying of exhaustion. She stood at the bottom of the stairs to catch her breath before pushing her suitcase back to the dormitory.

As soon as she approached the dormitory door, she could clearly hear her roommates chatting inside.

This soundproofing is terrible.

But they're actually talking about "The Female Painter of the Tang Dynasty"?!

"Great!" Mo Yun perked up and immediately pushed open the door to excitedly join in: "Were you just talking about February Sky's novel?"

The roommates' discussion abruptly stopped.

They exchanged glances, all feeling a little embarrassed.

Clearly, they all remembered what happened back then. Mo Yun had excitedly shared with them that she had read a great book, which was Er Yue Tian's "Returning to High School Days." However, when they heard that it was written by a relatively unknown author and that the book had only been updated a few times and had few favorites, they casually brushed it off.

Who could have imagined that this book would become such a hit!

The girls weren't particularly fond of reading novels before; they were the kind who could read them or not. It was only after they came across short videos during summer vacation at home that they became interested in "Back to High School" and then they couldn't stop reading.

Now that Er Yue Tian has started a new story, they are reading it immediately.

February Sky's new novel, "The Female Painter of the Tang Dynasty," is completely different from "Back to High School," but they have one thing in common: they are both very good and addictive.

The roommates hadn't seen each other for a long time, and as soon as they met, they started chatting for a while. As luck would have it, Mo Yun overheard them!

Mo Yun didn't think that much about it at all.

She now only experiences the pleasure of having her favorite hidden gem authors and novels discovered and secretly praised.

"Hehehe, that's great! Now we can read novels together. I've been wanting to discuss this with you guys, but none of you know Eryue, so I had nowhere to say it..."

Mo Yun joined the discussion with a laugh.

"Did you all read yesterday's update? The female lead's plan to find herself a live-in son-in-law is hilarious, hahaha!"

"I watched it! I was so excited during the banquet scene. Everyone's eyes were on the female lead, and I felt even more excited than she was! The author wrote it so well!"

"It's good, but there aren't enough chapters. One chapter a day is simply not enough."

"that is."

"......"

The girls in Mo Yun's dormitory are all good-tempered and reasonable people. Putting aside their awkwardness, they usually get along quite well.

The group chatted as they packed their things, and time passed quickly.

Just as everyone had finished talking and were sitting quietly in their seats playing on their phones, one of the roommates suddenly exclaimed, "The Great Tang Female Painter has updated!"

"Really?!"

Mo Yun was fiddling with her makeup bag when she heard this. She immediately put down the brush in her hand, picked up her phone, and opened the Feihong Novel app.

The novel that appears first on her Feihong Novel app reading page is none other than "The Female Painter of the Tang Dynasty".

This means that Mo Yun's final reading session ended here.

"Cunning! They actually updated early today," Mo Yun grinned as she clicked on the link.

[Regarding his daughter's outrageous suggestion, Yan Liben said he would consider it, but in reality, he did not entirely agree with it.]

But this is clearly not the time to disagree.

His wife and daughter were both in high spirits, so he planned to wait until they calmed down before explaining things to them in detail.

He thought he had thought things through thoroughly, but to his surprise, he was impeached by the emperor the very next day.

The Imperial Censor Wang accused him of failing to manage his household properly, and accused his daughter of being outspoken, dissolute, and lacking any semblance of feminine decorum.

How absurd!

Yan Liben was somewhat annoyed. These were merely children's private remarks, yet he had taken them to court and stirred up trouble. He immediately began to refute them:

"It seems the position of censor is too leisurely, otherwise why would Censor Wang be so focused on the opinions of women!"

"As the official in charge of supervising all officials, it is my duty to impeach you for failing to properly manage your household."

"Hmph, whether my daughter Yan Liben marries or not, I can support her for the rest of her life. But Wang Yushi, I heard that your family is marrying off another daughter recently. I wonder which family's young master it is this time?"

Yan Liben said this deliberately to embarrass him.

Everyone knows that Imperial Censor Wang is ruthless, treating his son like a treasure but his daughter like dirt.

Although other families also value their sons, daughters are still their own children. When they reach marriageable age, parents all want to find a good family for their daughters.

But this Imperial Censor Wang's son was in debt from gambling, so he arranged for his eldest daughter to marry a wealthy merchant. Among the social classes of scholars, farmers, artisans, and merchants, merchants were ranked last. What respectable family would even consider a merchant?

Now that his second daughter has reached marriageable age, he wants to marry her off to a prince who is over forty and whose wife has died, for the sake of his son's future.

I've heard that the prince already has two legitimate sons, and the eldest son is even older than the second daughter of the Imperial Censor's family. It's easy to imagine that his daughter won't get any good treatment after marrying into the family!

What a terrible thing to do.

Yan Liben sighed, feigning concern: "Alas, I am no match for Imperial Censor Wang in raising his daughter!"

"you......"

The Imperial Censor Wang was speechless after being rebuked by him.

He did indeed want to marry his daughter off as a second wife. So what if the man was older and had children? After all, he was a member of the royal family, and his status was undeniable.

Yan Liben dared to ridicule the other party in court, and Imperial Censor Wang immediately complained to the emperor: "Your Majesty, Vice Minister Yan is clearly showing contempt for the imperial family..."

The emperor sat firmly on his high platform.

Today's incident was just a minor skirmish; he didn't take it to heart at all.

Seeing that Imperial Censor Wang was going too far, escalating a trivial matter into a disregard for the dignity of the imperial family, he felt displeased.

"Alright," he said, turning his gaze to Yan Liben. "Minister Yan, in my opinion, you are better at raising your daughter."

A young woman who could utter such words about a son-in-law must not be an ordinary girl.

The emperor's words sealed the matter, and that was the end of it.

Because of the emperor's words, public opinion about Yan Huaijin reversed considerably, changing from being completely negative to being mixed.

Some say she is extraordinary and a woman who is just as capable as any man, while others say she is attention-seeking and nonsensical.

When Yan Huaijin learned that his father had been impeached, he was both amused and exasperated.

A young woman casually uttering some harsh words, unrelated to politics, and yet people are so bored as to bring it up in the imperial court.

However, this incident also served as a reminder to her that this was not modern times, but a society where imperial power was highly centralized, and she would have to be extra careful with her words in the future.

If someone were to accidentally find fault with something, they could really be beheaded.

"That Imperial Censor Wang has really shot himself in the foot. Now look what he's done, he's angered the Emperor," Mo Yun said gleefully after reading the update.

Their Yu Kingdom also had a long period of feudalism in its history, so Mo Yun didn't find the patriarchal society in the book, where men were superior to women, strange at all.

She simply disliked Imperial Censor Wang.

One of my roommates chimed in, "Yeah, what does it matter to him whether the female lead gets married or not? He just went there to get himself killed!"

Another roommate turned around and joined the discussion: "He's such a stubborn old man. He probably doesn't even treat his daughters like human beings. Didn't he see that he sold his eldest daughter to a rich merchant for money, and then gave his second daughter to that prince..."

Mo Yun felt a chill.

"In ancient times, a prince in his forties was considered an old man. This father is really heartless!"

"I'm speechless. He's an official, after all. Is his family so poor that they can't even support their daughter?"

"Who told him to have a burdensome son? He's incompetent and gambles. When things go wrong, he sells his sister to cover for him. Humph, no matter how many sisters a guy has, it won't be enough for him to squander!"

......

The group discussed the matter animatedly, even going so far as to elaborate on the short update of just one chapter of "The Great Tang Female Painter."

Finally, Mo Yun said thankfully, "Luckily, the female lead didn't transmigrate into their family, otherwise it would have been a complete disaster from the start!"

She made a casual remark, but to her surprise, her roommate exclaimed "Hey!" and stared at her intently, her eyes sparkling with interest.

She felt a little uncomfortable being stared at, but the other person exclaimed excitedly, "This idea is quite interesting! What do you think would happen if the female lead really transmigrated into the body of the second daughter of Imperial Censor Wang?"

Mo Yun was stunned.

She didn't know! She was just saying it casually; how could she know what would happen?!

Her roommate didn't wait for her to answer and continued talking.

"I have a good-for-nothing younger brother and a father who doesn't treat me like a human being. If I marry, I'll have an old husband and two sons older than me. I'm caught in a dilemma, with a dragon's den in front and a tiger's lairs behind..."

Oh my god!

Mo Yun didn't think much of it at first, but after hearing her roommate say that, she also felt that if the female lead were to transmigrate into the body of the second daughter, she could imagine how fierce the struggle would be.

It's so exciting just to think about it.

"Holy crap, that's brilliant!"

"Could you please write it down, author?!"

"I really want to see this. If the female lead marries into that family, she will definitely have to fight wits and courage with those two sons. Otherwise, she will definitely not have a good ending after the old prince dies."

"Is that even a question...?"

The roommates, because of this sudden idea, inexplicably started talking again.

They only knew that they were interested in this kind of plot, but they didn't know that in Xu Ying's previous life, this kind of plot had a specific name: domestic intrigue.
