The storm can send fish to their deaths in the mixed-race clans of the forest.
Jiang Yunlan woke up from her sleep and just then saw 022 returning from outside.
She hadn't slept in today; the sky outside was just beginning to lighten, and two moons could be vaguely seen hidden in the blue sky. The two lemming orc cubs and Cotton in the cave were still asleep, so she greeted 022 very softly.
Good morning, 022.
A gentle, clean sound reached 022's ears.
The transparent slime was clearly stunned again, its round eyes turning into vertical ovals. It didn't reply immediately, remaining silent for a few seconds, just as it had yesterday when she asked it if it wanted fish, as if judging whether it should reply before drawing a conclusion and speaking.
"Good morning, Jiang Yunlan. 022 sends its greetings," it said.
It began to wonder why Jiang Yunlan, who initially wouldn't even look it in the eye, was now willing to talk to it. It was curious, but it didn't ask.
The recorder is not a participant, and should not have much connection with life within a civilization. Jiang Yunlan's ability to see it stemmed from an accidental miracle, and should not affect its ability to record this civilization.
022 shifted its gaze and, as usual, floated to each orc's side, recording their condition.
Seeing its movements, Jiang Yunlan took the firewood from the bonfire, got up, and went to the semi-circular platform outside, where she set up a new bonfire in the open space.
Without exception, all the awake beastmen stared at Lan with bright, curious eyes, their heads swaying from side to side as Lan moved.
Jiang Yunlan finished building a new fire, and when she looked up, she saw several orcs sitting together with their upper bodies propped up, looking confused. They seemed to want to help her but couldn't understand what she was trying to do by starting a fire outside.
She didn't let the beastmen sit there for too long; she smiled and called them to bring food outside to make breakfast.
Before cooking, she didn't forget to take some charcoal from the fire to brush her teeth. While brushing, she taught the beastmen how to clean their teeth with charcoal. Good teeth meant they could eat more food.
The clan's remaining five fish had already been processed yesterday and only needed a simple rinse before cooking. Jiang Yunlan took the five fish and gave three to Maple Sugar to cook. While teaching Maple Sugar how to make boiled fish, she also grilled the remaining two fish.
After a while, the three orcs, still half asleep, smelled the fragrant scent and groggily sat up, their eyes not yet open.
Hearing them get up, Jiang Yunlan immediately turned around and called them over for breakfast. The beastmen recognized the word "breakfast" and cheered excitedly.
Arashi made food that was just as delicious as last night!
The orcs received less fish this morning than last night, so they ate with extra care, thinking that this would be the last time they had any. Without Lan leading them to catch fish, how could they possibly have speared any fish?
No orc thought Lan would go out today, after all, Lan had already brought back fire.
After finishing breakfast, the orcs in Maple Red's gathering teams packed their stone knives, bamboo tubes, and wooden buckets, preparing to go out to gather food and water. They had used too much water last night, so they had to go fetch water again today.
The orcs in the gathering team were about to leave when Lan stopped them.
Orcs: OvO?
Jiang Yunlan pointed at herself, blinked her eyes, and said with an innocent face, "You forgot to bring me along."
...
Having successfully left, Jiang Yunlan was once again carried in front of Ah Bai, feeling the speed of flying as they arrived at the riverbank.
There were still no wild animals by the river this morning, perhaps frightened by yesterday's fire, and they took a detour to another section of the river to drink. When the beastmen saw the fish swimming in the river, they instantly gripped their spearfishing tools, looking as if they were ready to fight the fish for three hundred rounds.
Jiang Yunlan remembered their battle results from yesterday. They only let Heitu go into the river to catch fish, and had Feng Hong fill water on the riverbank and take care of the cub Heitu. Then, she took the other three beastmen to place the fish baskets.
Two fish baskets were placed in the river, weighed down with stones to secure their position, and two berries with ripped skins were thrown in as bait.
The fishing trap was successfully set. Jiang Yunlan then led three orcs into the jungle and set up a small trap nearby—a lasso trap.
The thin vines she found weren't very resilient, and she wasn't sure if they would be enough to catch animals. She treated it as practice to get back into the swing of things.
Not far from the lasso trap, a pit trap slowly appeared. Jiang Yunlan led the beastmen to dig the trap, make cover, leave a mark, and then led them back to meet up with Feng Hong and Hei Tu.
Seeing Lan's figure, Heitu, holding the fish in her fork, tried to approach, but her feet remained rooted to the spot. She stared intently at the fish in her hand for several seconds before awkwardly walking up to Lan and suddenly handing her the fish.
She looked away from Lan, pursed her lips and didn't say a word, her face expressionless, making it seem as if she didn't like Lan.
Jiang Yunlan took the four fish with delight, handed them to Feng Hong to prepare, and smiled as brightly as yesterday at Heitu, "Heitu is amazing, you caught four fish today!"
Even if Kurotsuchi couldn't understand, the emotional value she conveyed was still immense. Kurotsuchi, who was observing her out of the corner of her eye, could tell at a glance that she was extremely happy when she got the fish.
Kurotsuchi's pursed lips couldn't help but curve into a smile, but she quickly straightened her face and returned to her unapproachable expression, as if she didn't care about Lan's reaction.
Jiang Yunlan noticed that Feng Hong seemed a bit awkward, but didn't say much. With a slight smile, she walked over to Feng Hong and wrapped the fish that Feng Hong had dissected in leaves before putting it into the wooden bucket. She also put the inedible gills and other waste in leaves, intending to put them into the fish baskets in the upper section of the river as bait.
It was almost noon, and the fish baskets had been there for some time. Jiang Yunlan prepared to lead the beastmen away, and while they were at it, they would go and check on the fish baskets in the river.
She wasn't sure if she could catch any fish, and felt a little uneasy. The clueless beastmen, oblivious to her worries, ran off in the direction she pointed, their minds filled with the thought that they'd caught fish today and could eat fish again!
So, the beastmen, who were completely unaware of anything, arrived at their destination and, upon seeing the fish in the basket, collectively went into a daze.
Huh? Why are there fish in the vines? Don't they run away? Can I catch them in the branches? Wait... it seems like I can catch them with my hands! Realizing this, the beastmen's eyes widened and they rushed into the river, only to be called by Jiang Yunlan.
Upon hearing their names called, the orcs turned around and looked at Lan with bewildered expressions.
Jiang Yunlan patted Ah Bai, who was holding her, put her feet back on the ground, walked into the river, grabbed the fish basket, and said to the beastmen, "Pull."
The orcs initially: ?
After understanding...
!!
The orcs roared and charged forward, grabbing the fish basket containing four or five fish and pulling it ashore.
Two fish baskets, placed some distance apart, were placed in the same spot.
"Fish! So many fish that the two black-soiled fishermen caught!" Feng Hong pulled out the fish from the two fish baskets, looking at the nine fish that had been stunned, she even doubted her own hands. They really pulled these fish up? It felt so unreal.
She blinked several times, grinned foolishly at the fish that hadn't disappeared, and exclaimed, "Lan is so amazing! Lan sent the fish to its death!"
We caught so many fish today!
Feng Hong was very happy and happily dragged the other orcs to process the fish.
No orc doubted whether Lan's ability to make the fish willingly come to him for capture was some kind of sorcery. In their eyes, Lan was a wise man, and it was only natural that he could do things that ordinary orcs could not.
Even if Lan could rain down food from the sky, they would only shout how amazing Lan is, and then blindly believe Lan. The long-starved and overly naive beastmen would never suspect that Lan, who brings them food, is a bad beastman.
The orcs, having prepared the fish, followed Lan's example by wrapping the fish in leaves, placing them in a wooden bucket, and then handing the fish basket back to Lan.
What Lan brought, of course should be given to Lan.
Jiang Yunlan took the fish basket, checked it, and after confirming that it was still usable, threw it back into the river, fixed it to the bottom with a stone, and put in bait.
"It's time to gather them." She walked up to Feng Hong and gestured that she was going to find some fruit.
She noticed that the beastmen needed more food than the humans on Earth. The food that would have filled her body before was only enough to satisfy her current hunger to about 60-70%. If she needed so much food, the other beastmen would only need to eat even more.
Feng Hong understood her meaning, and with a "Yo-ah" sound, she walked in front, leading the beastmen to follow her.
There are too many hidden dangers in the forest, so they rarely transform into beast form when exploring. At most, they only transform into half-beast form to avoid being hunted down by wild beasts who see them as weak prey.
But if you encounter a behemoth, whether or not you transform into a beast is irrelevant; the most important thing is how to escape as quickly as possible. Those are beings that even powerful wild beasts and carnivorous orcs cannot contend with.
Six orcs of different races moved swiftly through the forest, only slowing down when they entered the area where the Yuanlu orc clan was gathering food.
The delicious fruits in the forest had long been eaten by the animals, and most of the remaining fruits were now sour and astringent, but they still bore the marks of being gnawed on. It was these marks that taught the beastmen which fruits were non-toxic and edible.
Most of the plants in the Beast World were different from those on Earth. Jiang Yunlan struggled to identify them for a long time before finally giving up on picking wild vegetables. She worried that what she was bringing back wasn't wild vegetables, but some kind of poisonous plant.
She sighed softly, her eyes fixed on the cluster of mushrooms, her mouth watering, wanting to pick some to take home.
Unfortunately, she didn't have any wild animals to test for poison, so she had to give up her idea with regret, her two furry ears drooping unhappily to the side.
The orcs were still searching for the berry bushes familiar to their clan, picking the remaining fruit.
Jiang Yunlan followed behind them, picking fruits of varying sizes. She inadvertently caught sight of a familiar pod-bearing plant. The birds had ravaged the plant, leaving it with almost no fruit; the entire plant lay limply on the ground. Her pupils dilated in shock, and she rushed forward to search for any survivors beneath the bird's beak.
If she wasn't mistaken, this green pod should be the beast-world version of a wild pea.
After a frantic rescue, Jiang Yunlan counted the intact wild peas in her hand: thirteen. She gratefully tore off a leaf and carefully wrapped the remaining thirteen wild peas.
Thankfully, it wasn't a complete wipeout. The plants to be sown in the spring are now secured.
She stood up with satisfaction, patted Ah Bai's arm (who had helped her find peas), and said with a smile, "Ah Bai is great."
The white-haired, red-eyed rabbit-beastman smiled shyly, pointed in the direction of the other beastmen, and gestured as if asking her if it was time to go back. With him following her, Maple Red and the other beastmen stayed behind to continue picking fruit, not following her, but their gazes would occasionally drift towards her location.
"Lan, yo-a-yo-a!" Feng Hong called out to Jiang Yunlan, carrying a wooden bucket filled with berries and fish on her shoulder.
Lan, let's go to the next place.
There was only one spot left, and they picked all the fruit from the bushes they had found.
