The watchtower will be sung by bards
Upon hearing the dragon's question, Jiang Yunlan subconsciously looked at the winged beastmen who knew of the existence of the Zelan beastmen.
However, the winged beastmen called Aliya and her companions earth beastmen and had no idea they were Zelan. Jiang Yunlan found it amazing that the dragon knew she knew Zelan.
"I've seen it." She didn't deny it. The dragon had already discovered it; there was no point in denying it.
"Are they alright?" Long asked.
Jiang Yunlan thought of the Zelan cubs who were reluctant to be born, and of Aliya and the others who had suffered as members of their own kind. She didn't know how to respond.
And so, the dragon understood. Zelan, who had lost contact with his ancestors after the Age of Calamity, was not doing well.
He adopted a proper sitting posture, obediently sitting on the stool, and looked at Lan hopefully, "I want to see them."
“I will ask for you. If Zelan agrees, I will take you to see Zelan.” Jiang Yunlan’s words were somewhat vague, without revealing that there was only one Zelan beastman who had already been born in Xia’s habitat.
Long fell even more silent. Her hesitation and indecision seemed to tell him that the situation of the Zelans was worse than he had guessed.
The images from the inherited memories flashed through his mind. The dragon thought of his mother and his kinsmen whose whereabouts were unknown. He slowly opened his mouth and said, "My name is Greysien, the chieftain of Xia. Please tell them that I am in the mountains, and they can come to find me whenever they wish."
"I will convey your message to Zelan."
He listened to Lan's answer, nodded steadily, and quickly stretched out his two paws, staring at Lan with his bright eyes, "I want to eat more! I want different food than before!"
A bowl of rice with toppings was served.
Grasien gripped the spoon and ate the rice vigorously, his tail swaying happily from side to side behind him.
After the winged beastmen finished eating, they lifted the dragon, whose stomach was like a bottomless pit, from the table and carried it outside to put it down. Azurewood Crow held the dragon's paw and said gently but firmly to the disgruntled dragon, "You've already tried the flatbread, rice, and noodle soup. You can't eat any more today. Greysien, the energy stones are your food; be careful of indigestion."
After being gently reprimanded, Greysia turned her head away in a huff, but her paws remained obediently in his hand, and she followed him closely, dragging her tail behind her.
Jiang Yunlan saw this scene and felt inexplicably familiar with it. It was similar to the scene when Hui Mi urged her to rest.
She blinked, dismissing the unfounded thought, and led the winged beastmen to see the new items made by the Xia clan. Before returning from the mountains, she had told the winged beastmen that she would treat them to items invented by Xia.
Leading the dragon and the winged beastman up the watchtower, she reached out and touched the large telescope fixed inside the tower, smiling as she asked the winged beastman Cangmu Yuya, who was the first to climb the tower, "Want to give it a try?"
"What is this for?" he asked curiously, releasing his grip on Greysia's hand and touching the tall object with interest.
Xia indeed created new items.
He suddenly remembered that Green Habitat and Green Branch had told him that Xia's habitat had more than doubled since the last fruit season. It was incredible; Xia had only been on the grasslands for two snow seasons, yet she had already grown from a small clan into a very powerful one.
Listening to his confusion, Jiang Yunlan demonstrated how to use the telescope and said, "This is called a telescope. It's something you use while standing on this building. It can be used to observe very far places and defend against suddenly appearing enemies and wild animals."
Of all the watchtowers in the tribe, only the one at the main gate is completed; the others are still under construction. Once all the watchtowers in all directions are finished, she will be able to ease some of her worries.
The grasslands are flat and vast, allowing the telescope to be used to its fullest potential. When the beast tide arrives someday, Xia can quickly prepare for battle using signal flares fired from the watchtower, preventing them from being caught off guard.
As Cangmu Yuya listened to Lan's explanation, he looked up and gazed into the distance. Standing here, he could indeed see much farther. He wondered what kind of sights he could see with a "telescope."
He looked away and operated the telescope as Lan had instructed.
"This...this can actually see farther than the eyes of us winged beastmen!" he exclaimed in astonishment, tilting his head back and looking into the distance with both his own eyes and a telescope.
This was repeated several times. He finally accepted that when other orcs used the item, they could see farther than their own kind.
He really liked the binoculars that Lan had taken out. Aoki Yuya reluctantly raised his head, his hands still on the binoculars, his legs rooted to the spot.
He could no longer walk.
"Lan, our clan wants to exchange this with Xia!" he said, both reserved and excited.
“Xia hasn’t produced many telescopes yet, so we can’t accept exchanges for the time being,” Jiang Yunlan said with a smile, seeing his momentary disappointment. “But our two races are friends. So Xia is willing to give you a telescope.”
The set of painted pottery she took out during the hot season was given to the Unicorn Clan. Of course, she would also be willing to give away a telescope to the Feathered Beastmen, who were also friends of the Xia Clan.
Upon hearing this, Cangmu Yuya, who had been looking downcast, suddenly opened his eyes wide and repeatedly asked, "Did they really give us the telescope?"
"Really," Jiang Yunlan replied with a smile.
Having received Lan's affirmation, he happily looked through the telescope for a while longer before retreating to the foot of the tower to let the other winged beastmen try. Dragon, seeing their reactions, felt a surge of curiosity and tried it himself, but quickly grew bored and left the telescope after only a few seconds.
He still preferred to observe his surroundings with his own eyes. A telescope that can't be moved around easily is just so-so.
The gasps of surprise gradually subsided, and the winged beastmen had all descended from the watchtower, standing beside their kin and whispering their thoughts.
Hearing their fondness for Xia clan items, Jiang Yunlan led them to a newly opened jewelry store on the commercial street.
It seems that the beautiful clothes in the clothing store aroused the orcs' interest in dressing themselves up. The decorations on the orcs in summer gradually increased, and were no longer limited to some flowers, plants and pretty stones.
Thus, jewelry stores were born.
“This is a mirror.” Jiang Yunlan picked up a wooden mirror and handed it to the winged beastman.
Cangmu Yuya took the wooden mirror, staring wide-eyed at the mirror that reflected his image more clearly than the Milky Way, turning his head left and right in amazement, "It's so clear. Amazing, Xia is amazing."
"Chief! I want to see too." Qingzhi Yuya moved closer to him and exclaimed "Wow!" in front of the mirror that showed his eyebrows.
The Xia clan orcs, who were browsing the jewelry, heard a noise and looked in the direction of the sound. They saw the winged beasts gathered in front of the pile of wooden mirrors and laughed in a friendly manner.
A fox-beastman covered his mouth and pulled along his companions, including a sheep-beastman, a rock squirrel-beastman, and a wolf-beastman, to help Lan introduce the clan's items to the winged beastmen.
"This is called a comb, it's used to groom your fur." The fox-beastman skillfully picked up a round comb, handed it to the smaller winged beastman, and demonstrated how to use it.
The items the winged beastmen used to groom their hair didn't look like combs, but they still picked up a round comb and tried it on their heads.
His eyes suddenly lit up. This thing called a comb is really useful! It's much easier to comb through hair than the tools his clan used for grooming.
One of the wolf-beastmen picked up a hairband and hair tie and asked the long-haired winged beastman if he wanted to try them, "Use these, and your vision won't be blocked."
Hearing that his vision wouldn't be obstructed, the winged beastman didn't hesitate for a second and immediately took it. He had never used it before and didn't know how to use it. After trying for a while without success, his expression became frustrated.
Helpless, the wolf-beastman took back the hair tie with tassels from his hand, told him to stand still, and then bent down to tie his hair into a low braid with a round comb.
"Alright." The wolf-beastman said, standing up to grab a mirror for the winged beastman to look in, only to find that all the mirrors in the shop were gone. He paused, then shook his head with a smile, squatting down to show the winged beastman the little braids he had tied for himself.
He shook his head slightly, and the fluffy ball hanging in his hair swayed a few times as well.
Seeing his actions, the winged beastman could almost imagine the tassels swaying on his head, and he immediately liked the hair tie that could hold his hair in place even more.
The interaction between the beastmen was so cute that Jiang Yunlan couldn't help but smile.
She sat next to the cashier, watching the conversation between her people and the winged beastmen with 022 perched on her head.
The dragon's food consists of glittering, gem-like energy stones, and it can't resist anything that sparkles. It lingered on the table, examining the glittering ornaments for a while before finally reaching out its claw to touch them.
Finally, the winged beastmen, who had been warmly received by the Xia clan beastmen, all tied their hair into small braids and left the jewelry shop satisfied, carrying several round combs, several wooden mirrors, and stained glass ornaments for buying dragons.
They were dazzled by the Xia clan's possessions and wanted to buy everything. However, they hadn't brought much from the clan, so they had to painfully give up most of their favorite items and choose only the resources that the clan needed and was most in short supply.
At this moment, they couldn't help but feel fortunate that they had been willing to help the other orc clans in the mountains exchange goods for Xia's, and had obtained some supplies from those orcs. If they had only brought their own supplies, it really wouldn't have been enough to exchange for what they wanted to buy.
After purchasing the necessary items for their clan, Cangmu Yuya led Lan to the wooden cart they had placed at Xia's habitat.
Before the Xia's orcs left the mountains, they made wagons for them to transport the ore to Xia. They filled those wagons with ore and, using Xia's wooden wagons as inspiration, made a makeshift version, filling it with goods belonging to the orc clans of the mountains.
Jiang Yunlan examined the items the Qunshan clan had brought to trade with Xia, and was drawn to two of the most eye-catching items: a honey-colored liquid and a milky-colored liquid.
They were contained within large plant leaves that resembled open bags, and were housed in hollow wood.
Cangmu Yuya followed Lan's gaze and introduced the items from two different orc clans to Lan, "This golden water is sweet water extracted from flowers by the Honey Butterfly Orcs, it's their food. The white liquid on the other side is a food that the Mountain Deer Orcs found in a certain plant, it's white juice."
"The mountain deer beastmen say that the white juice is very suitable for feeding cubs. There must be many cubs born in Xiaxin. I think you will need it."
Jiang Yunlan suddenly realized what was going on, asked one of her clansmen to go to the dining hall and get two spoons, and then continued to look through the other items.
The clans of the mountains knew that Xia accepted everything, so they sent her many strange and unusual items, which she accepted as they knew.
The clansmen who went to the canteen quickly ran back. Jiang Yunlan took the spoon and first tasted the white sauce.
The white sauce tastes more like milk or goat milk, but its overall consistency is closer to that of liquid yogurt.
She nodded, picked up a clean new spoon, scooped up a little sweet water, and put it in her mouth. The rich flavor of wild honey hit her taste buds.
She understood. Sweet water is honey, so the orcs who can extract sweet water must be bee orcs.
-----------------------
Author's Note: Lan didn't know what "Honey Butterfly" referred to in the orc language, so she guessed wrong. It's not a bee orc, it's a honey butterfly orc.
