What did you say, a beast tide? The Xia clan from the forest…
The wolf-beastmen, who had been out hunting for many days, suddenly dragged a pile of unprocessed prey into the Xia clan.
Jiang Yunlan rushed over upon hearing the news and saw Hati drop his prey, abandoning several wolf-beastmen and a group of horse-beastmen, charging menacingly towards her with a bloodthirsty aura.
Seeing her frown and take a step back, the wounded alpha wolf suddenly stopped and fell to the ground.
"Chief!" his people shouted, dropping their prey and running over, leaving Feng Er and a group of horse-beastmen standing there blankly.
Hati casually got up, glanced at his ruptured wound, and looked speechlessly at the astonished tribesmen: "Go back and bring Lan's reward."
"Feng Er! Come here." He shouted, looking up, then quickly lowered his head to lick his injured forelimb.
When he fights in his beast form, he likes to use his forelimbs to take the bruises; he's long been used to such injuries. But the pain never lessens just because he's used to it.
Jiang Yunlan looked at the beastmen dragging their prey over, then at Hati, who was in beast form. Most of the wolf-beastmen in their beast forms bore wounds; some were almost healed, while others had fresh scars. The wounds didn't seem serious, but since Hati and others were injured, their condition was clearly quite bad.
"Hati, tell them to stop moving. I'll go get some medical supplies," she said gravely.
Upon hearing this, Hati raised a paw and waved it at her, telling her to hurry up, and then she threw back a sentence.
"Don't move either."
The alpha wolf tilted its head, its raised paw motion halting in place, a hint of doubt showing in its emerald eyes.
"You can put your hand down. What I mean is, stay here and don't wander around, so you don't hurt yourself again..."
Before Jiang Yunlan could finish speaking, a hurried voice drew all her attention.
"Lan! We've discovered wild animals outside."
The wounded wolves' eyes sharpened. They hadn't expected the wild beasts they'd driven away to follow them to the Xia clan.
"The patrol of orcs went to find Feng Hong and the others..."
The pack of wolves lying on the ground stood up, rubbing their hands together in anticipation.
"Aww—"
At Hati's command, the pack of wolves, covered in blood, charged out of the Xia clan to tear apart the beasts that had challenged them.
The ram-beastman who came to report the situation looked puzzled and turned to Lan uneasily.
Jiang Yunlan subconsciously rubbed her temples; the familiar headache was back. She gave the ram-beastman a reassuring look and calmly quickened her pace, saying, "Don't worry about them over there. Trust our people. The horse-beastmen need you and the others to look after them. We'll be back soon."
After briefly explaining the situation, she led 022 and two clansmen to fetch medical supplies and headed to where Feng Hong and the other orcs were. Yan Duoyu had taken a group of orcs to the forest to cut down trees and was not with the clan.
There aren't many orcs in the clan, and the semi-adult orcs have long since taken on the same heavy responsibilities as the adult orcs, protecting the clan.
When Jiang Yunlan arrived, she saw the half-grown Yan Ganguo and two other half-grown orcs holding weapons, laughing happily without caring about the blood splattered on them.
Hearing the noise behind him, Feng Hong immediately dragged the stone hammer over to look.
"Lan! Want an extra meal tonight?" She blinked, not looking at the dead beast whose head she had smashed, her eyes only filled with the desire for food.
Compared to a bone knife, a weapon like a giant stone hammer, which allows her to use brute force, is definitely more suitable for her.
Jiang Yunlan sighed inwardly, counted the number of wild beasts, and agreed without hesitation: "Add more!"
The four animal carcasses were dragged away by the tribesmen. She handed several medicine jars and a bandage to Hati, and gave ointment to her own tribesmen who had suffered minor injuries.
The bandages in the tribe were made by dismantling and re-knitting the fleece quilts, as was the bag of fine thread she kept in her handbag.
Yan Ganguo's injury was quite obvious, located on her face. Jiang Yunlan had no choice but to ask her to squat down so she could apply the ointment.
“Lan, my jerky, have your people give it to Feng Er and the others, and have them take it back to my habitat,” Hati said, slinging the bandages on his back over his shoulder. He walked over to Lan and gestured for her to look at the wolf-beastman lying to the side. “Hurry up and come with me to my clan.”
Upon hearing this, Jiang Yunlan shoved the ointment into Yan Ganguo's hand and turned to look at the uninjured Feng Hong and the other orcs, "I need you to come with me to the Hati clan's habitat."
The orcs, including Feng Hong, didn't understand what was going on, but obediently agreed. They carried Lan and a bunch of items for healing, and followed the wolf-beastmen.
They didn't understand the situation, but Jiang Yunlan knew very well that Hati insisted on taking her back to the clan immediately, even without treating himself, because his people were seriously injured. He wasn't the kind of orc who would suffer pain at his own expense.
Those "rewards" were for paying her to treat her injuries.
We have arrived at the habitat of the Hatti clan.
Jiang Yunlan was placed back on the ground by Feng Hong, her feet touching the ground. She steadied herself and looked around. Just as she had expected, all the wolf-beastmen of the Hati clan, except for the cubs, were wounded. Wounded beastmen could be seen everywhere, lying on the ground or leaning against houses.
"...Where did you go hunting? It looks like you've run into a beast horde." She frowned, calmly instructing her tribesmen to treat the wolf-orc's wounds and fetch a pot to boil water. Worried about seriously injured orcs, she even brought bone needles.
Hati was like a skeleton as soon as he returned to the clan's habitat, putting his injured paw aside and lying on the ground to avoid the wound.
Hearing Lan's question, he looked up in surprise and said, puzzled, "What are you thinking? How could it be a beast tide? We just cleared out a few groups of wild beasts."
His expression was normal, and Jiang Yunlan, seeing his reaction, roughly understood what was going on. In the beast world, herds of wild beasts were a common and normal phenomenon.
Why aren't there as many wild animals in the forest? Is it because wind beasts have appeared in the forest?
A question flashed through Jiang Yunlan's mind, but she didn't have time to delve into it. She asked, "Where is the seriously injured orc?"
When it comes to life, everything else can take a backseat.
The alpha wolf on the ground seemed to have been paused, its head held high in the air for several seconds before slowly lowering itself.
"Lup!" He drew his breath from his dantian and uttered a penetrating voice.
The humanoid Lupu emerged from a distance, looking exhausted. Blood trickled down her hands, but she ignored the drops and spoke as usual, "What is it, Chieftain?"
"Take Lan to see the seriously injured members of our clan."
Lupu understood, randomly grabbed a tribesman whose wounds were not serious, and ordered the tribesman to bury the dead body of his fellow tribesman. Then he turned to look at the squirrel-beastman cub who had suddenly fallen silent for some reason.
"Come with me." She stood in front of Jiang Yunlan, still with that same self-willed attitude.
Jiang Yunlan looked at Lupu, whose body was mostly soaked in blood, her expression grave. But soon, Jiang Yunlan realized that this wasn't her blood; her injuries weren't serious. If she were seriously injured, her movements and posture as she approached wouldn't have been the same as usual.
As Jiang Yunlan followed the wolf-beastman in front of her, she heard the emotionless voice of the alpha wolf coming from behind her.
"If it can't be cured, then there's no need to treat it. Just cure what can be cured."
“Okay,” she said.
She wouldn't act impulsively; if she were the only doctor available, she would abandon the orcs who couldn't be saved if necessary.
Hati quieted down, watching Lan's retreating figure before closing his eyes and falling asleep. If he hadn't been deprived of sleep for so long, he wouldn't have been injured by a wild beast due to a momentary lapse in concentration.
Few orcs survive severe injuries. Jiang Yunlan, following behind Lupu, only encountered two severely wounded wolf-orcs. One was Tara, who was inside the house. She had bumped into the other severely wounded orc on the way there.
The wolf-orc with its head down was being carried by its kin to the wolf-orcs' resting place when she happened to pass by and saw it.
Inside the house, next to Tara, an old werewolf was silently pounding herbs.
Jiang Yunlan remembered the unconscious wolf-orc before her. She was the orc who had bitten the redstone wood and was being lectured by her own kind, an orc who had only just come of age this year.
"Zefu, Chief Xia is now in your hands." Lupu said, lifting the animal skin curtain at the door and walking out of the house.
Jiang Yunlan glanced at Ze Fu, matching her name with her face, then strode over to Tara to check on her injuries. There was no bed; Tara was lying on a piece of animal hide. The wounds were secured with thick branches and bandaged, clearly having received emergency treatment.
Looking at Tara's arm wound, Jiang Yunlan felt relieved. The wolf-beastmen who came to her class remembered the methods she had taught for treating wounds.
She sterilized the needle with fire, washed her hands, threaded the needle... cleaned Tara's wound, completed all the preoperative preparations she could, and then picked up the bone needle with focused concentration.
There was no anesthetic in the beast world, and when she was stitching up Tara, the unconscious Tara was awakened by the pain.
"Lan, can my hands still build houses?" Tara asked upon waking up.
Jiang Yunlan continued her work without stopping, her needlework extremely steady, and replied, "I will do my best to ensure your hand is not affected."
This wasn't the first time she had stitched up an orc, but she couldn't guarantee that she could heal the orcs' wounds to the point of being unaffected every time.
Tara was in pain and wanted to move. But she remembered Lan saying that she absolutely couldn't move while her wound was being stitched up, so she tried her best to restrain herself: "Lan, once my hand is healed, I want to build a house like Xia's from scratch."
“I have other house plans and construction methods here. I’ll tell you about them once your wound has healed,” Jiang Yunlan quickly started a conversation to distract her.
The pain in her wound seemed to subside for a moment, and Tara was extremely excited, her eyes shining: "Will Lan teach me? Can I ask Lan any questions I have?"
Her eyes weren't the emerald green of Hati's, but red, like two bright rubies.
"certainly."
During the question-and-answer session, Jiang Yunlan stitched up the wound on her arm and then stitched up another wound that needed stitching before washing her hands and rushing to the next injured orc.
Wounds that could be treated with herbs and bandages were handled by other orcs. What she needed to deal with were injuries that the other orcs couldn't handle.
By the time they had finished treating all the wounded and regained their senses, it was already dark.
Jiang Yunlan belatedly realized that she felt dizzy and her hands were trembling. Her stomach was growling in protest; she was hungry.
"Lan, take a rest. You've already exhausted yourself today," said 022, who had been helping her rescue the orcs. Her voice was steady and calm, showing no signs of fatigue.
She nodded, sat down on the spot, and leaned against the enlarged version of 022.
"Lan, dinner is ready. Eat before you go to sleep."
Hearing Feng Hong's voice, Jiang Yunlan slowly opened her eyes. After a while, her disconnected mind finally recalled that she was currently in the Hati clan's habitat, not in the Xia clan's. She hadn't been sleeping in late, so it couldn't have been daytime when she woke up.
"Okay, I'll get up now," she said, standing up. She had recovered somewhat and had the strength to walk.
Feng Hong had been busy for a long time and was tired. But when she saw Lan's slow movements, she realized that Lan was out of energy, so she immediately squatted down and turned her back to Lan.
“Lan, I’ll carry you across,” she said. She might not be able to hold Lan steady in her arms right now, but she was sure she could carry Lan steadily on her back.
Jiang Yunlan did not refuse, climbed onto her back, and was carried to the place where food was cooked.
The Hati clan's dinner tonight was cooked by the Xia clan's orcs. Most of the wolf orcs were too tired to move, so the horse orcs brought the food to them. Feng Er and his group rushed back as soon as they received the meat prepared by the Xia clan for the Hati clan. They were still busy running around, not saying a word.
"Do you do this every fruit season?" Jiang Yunlan asked Hati, who was wolfing down his food, while eating.
The horse-beastmen took such good care of the wolf-beastmen that it seemed like they did it all the time.
Hati, stuffing food into his mouth, replied in a moment, "Yes. We don't want a beast tide to appear, so we must eliminate the surrounding wild beasts."
A real beast tide is far more terrifying than a herd of wild animals.
