"Master, I want to make a movie, can you help me?"
"For this?" The master frowned and continued, "I brought up all of you brothers. In my eyes, you are all the same."
Wu Jiawan nodded. What the master meant was that he would not favor one over the other. Since he had given everyone a way out, he would not leave out his own share.
"Master, why don't you ask your fellow disciples for their opinions?"
"You haven't even stepped out of this martial arts world, what ideas can you come up with?" the master said unhappily.
Although his fellow apprentices were about the same age as Wu Changyun, Hong Kong was in turmoil at the time, and those who had practiced martial arts were seen by outsiders as mere warriors, skilled in some boxing and kicking techniques. Even at his advanced age, his master was merely a clean-handed individual with a good reputation, a fundamental difference from those who had worked their way up the social ladder.
The master turned his back and took out three incense sticks from the drawer under the coffee table. He lit them with a lighter and handed them to Wu Jiawan, saying, "Go ahead."
Wu Jiawan took it and knelt in the middle of the hall, bowed to Guan Erye, and placed the incense in the censer. Only then did the master slowly speak, "Prepare fifty yuan for Master Ma tomorrow and have him take you to try it."
Hearing this, Wu Jiawan's heart skipped a beat. In 1973, pork in Hong Kong was 8 yuan per pound. Where was he supposed to get the 50 yuan?
Although this money is used for bribery, is it necessary to use so much of it?
"Ah, Master is really stubborn. I hope he won't be ripped off. Fifty yuan, how much can you earn as an extra?"
Although Wu Jiawan was grateful to his master for his help, he still couldn't help complaining. He had earned 200 yuan in the morning before the time travel. Excluding the impact of currency depreciation, if it were now, he would definitely not earn 50 yuan in the morning.
Wu Jiawan thought about this all day long. At night, after the big pot meal, most of his fellow apprentices would sneak out for a stroll, some staying out late. Those with a little extra cash would even go to the cinema. Wu Jiawan was just walking back into the house with a gloomy face when Fu Shun rushed out from the crack in the door, grabbed Wu Changyun's body, and shouted, "Changyun, has the master agreed to your request?"
"That's right, from now on I am Wu Changyun." Wu Changyun made this decision in his heart and nodded towards Fushun. Then he changed his mind and realized that he couldn't figure out a solution for this problem on his own no matter how hard he tried. Maybe Fushun really had a rich family?
"The master asked me to prepare fifty yuan."
"when?"
"Tomorrow morning."
Wu Changyun looked at Fu Shun who was silent, knowing that there was nothing he could do.
"Wait outside the door." Fushun pushed Wu Jiawan and slammed the door shut. Then the sound of rummaging through drawers came from the room. After a while, Fushun came out with a handful of change.
"Liuzi, although I don't know what happened to you these two days, I know that making movies is a good career path. I know several buddies who made money by making movies." Fushun muttered incessantly and was about to stuff the money into Wu Jiawan's hand.
Wu Changyun looked at the handful of banknotes and coins in Fushun's hand. Fifty yuan was not a small amount for either of them.
"Your money."
"I saved this money by doing odd jobs at night when I have nothing to do. I'll keep it in my pocket for now." Fushun urged Wu Changyun impatiently and stuffed the money into Wu Changyun's arms.
"Don't even think about it. When you make a killing, I'll ask you for five hundred." Fushun smiled innocently. He did work odd jobs every night. He initially had his eye on the shop's daughter, and after meeting her, he decided to save money. This money was also Fushun's wish. He knew that even if he saved for another year or two, it wouldn't mean much, so he gave up the idea to help his brother.
Wu Changyun did not refuse anymore, and his gratitude was evident in his words. Even though he had just arrived in this era, he had already recognized Fushun as his brother.
The next morning, Wu Changyun came to find his master with the money, and happened to meet the previously mentioned Master Ma in the lobby.
Master Ma is a small-time police sergeant who is in charge of more than a dozen uniformed officers. He was also a former martial artist who joined the police force to make a living. Because of his good fighting skills, he was noticed by his superiors and promoted to police sergeant.
Sergeant? Wu Changyun thought for a moment. The Hong Kong Independent Commission Against Corruption would be established in a year, so the current period would be the last year for corrupt police officers. Thinking of this, Wu Changyun felt that Master Ma was increasingly suspicious. Could he be trying to clear his name?
Following Master Ma to the door, he learned through a brief conversation that his full name was Ma Jiuxing. He looked serious and upright, but as soon as they met, Ma Jiuxing spread his hands towards Wu Changyun.
Wu Changyun handed a handful of change to Ma Jiuxing, who, without even looking at him, tilted his head and instructed Wu Changyun to get in. This Volkswagen was the predecessor of the Volkswagen. The interior had a metallic feel, and compared to modern cars, the details seemed a bit thin.
"Boy, have you ever acted in a movie before?"
“Yes.”
Wu Changyun did not hide anything. Pretending to know something when you don't will only bring trouble to yourself, and pretending not to know something when you know it is also unwise.
Ma Jiuxing glanced at Wu Changyun through the rearview mirror. This young man didn't seem to be very interested in this topic. He probably had some understanding of the job.
The car stopped on the side of the street, Ma Jiuxing took Wu Changyun out of the car, and not far away on the street, a man wearing a yellow sun hat was shouting with a big loudspeaker, directing the order of the filming scene. This scene made Wu Changyun feel a little excited. Hong Kong movies in the 1970s meant more opportunities. Even without relying on background and money, he could still fight for a chance to stand out in today's environment.
"Hey, this isn't Officer Ma."
The person who came was A Liang, who was responsible for recruiting extras and stand-ins. Ma Jiuxing's serious and stiff face finally showed a smile. Without much introduction, he took Wu Changyun into the museum.
