On Monday, we harvested the trees.
Dahua asked for leave from his boss in advance, as he was still a little worried about harvesting trees for the first time.
In the morning, my mother specially steamed some big buns and served them with white porridge and poached eggs so that Dahua could have a full meal.
I’m afraid I’ll be too busy to have lunch.
The camphor trees that every household has dug up are turned over on the spot, and the roots are tied to the soil with hemp ropes to form a ball.
Dahua was anxious, so he went to the village entrance to wait after breakfast.
After a while, the secretary also came.
"Dahua, are you here so early?" the secretary asked with a smile.
"Well, I didn't sleep well last night." Dahua replied.
The secretary stood beside him, his hands on his hips, gazing into the distance with a heroic look, took a deep breath, and slowly exhaled.
"Why, are you worried that something might happen today?"
Dahua shook his head and said, "It was my first time collecting trees, so I was a little worried. How many trucks would they have? Would we be able to load them all in one day? I thought about these questions over and over again."
"Have you figured out the answer?"
He shook his head.
"That's right. If you can't think of it, don't think about it. Don't worry about it. Sending several trucks and how much to collect in a day are other people's concerns. We just need to move the trees onto the trucks." The secretary is an optimistic person.
Dahua nodded and said, "After today, when this matter is settled, I will feel relieved!"
The secretary patted Dahua and said, "I want to thank you on behalf of the whole village!"
"Why are you being so polite?"
"Haha, okay, I won't tell you!"
The two of them were chatting enthusiastically at the entrance of the village.
After a while, someone came over and asked, "Secretary, why hasn't the tree collector come yet?"
The secretary frowned and looked at the time. Oh, it was already half past nine.
He thought for a moment and said, "It takes time for other people's cars to drive here from the city. Just wait a little longer. There's no rush."
He said so, but unlike the leisurely chat just now, he was chatting while waiting, and his legs were shaking like a sieve.
After waiting for another hour, the secretary stood up from the stone and said, "Let's make a phone call!"
“Beep, beep, beep…”
No one answered.
The secretary hung up the phone and picked it up again.
“Beep, beep, beep…”
Still no one answered.
His expression grew increasingly ugly.
Something is wrong, very wrong. Dahua recalled every detail of the past few days.
Suddenly I remembered that I met Sister Hu on the road yesterday. She said something strange in a mysterious way.
"I hope you can finish harvesting all the trees tomorrow!"
At first glance, it seems normal, a blessing, an expectation, and good words.
Dahua thought so too at the time.
But now that I think about it carefully, Sister Hu's expression seemed a little subtle when she spoke.
Like what? Like taking a bite of a sour orange without saying anything, smiling and waiting for you to take a bite too.
By now the secretary had made the fifth call, but still no one answered.
"Secretary, please continue fighting here. I'll go ask cousin Li Dali."
With that, Dahua hurried home and rode away on his motorcycle.
When Dahua broke into Sister Hu's office, she was trimming her nose hair in front of a round mirror. The mirror was propped up by a pile of books. She put her index finger against one of her nostrils and carefully poked the scissors into it.
"Sister Hu!" Dahua roared.
Sister Hu was so scared that her hand shook and she almost poked her nose.
Seeing that the person coming was Dahua, her face changed just as she was about to get angry, but she still looked cute.
"Oh, I was so scared, my heart was pounding." She stroked her chest and threw him a seductive glance.
"Sister Hu, Li Dali didn't come to collect the trees today. Do you know what happened?" Dahua asked.
"Oh, how should I know? I don't know, and you want me to know?" As she spoke, she gently patted Dahua's arm.
Dahua was thinking about something and didn't pay any attention to her actions.
"You must know that. You said yesterday 'I wish we could get all the trees!'"
"Is this sentence wrong? Tell me what's wrong with it?"
Dahua was stunned and couldn't explain what was going on.
"Hey, we are colleagues. Now, don't say I won't help you. I'll accompany you to his house." As she said that, she pulled Dahua with her white and smooth hand and walked out.
The motorcycle started and Sister Hu sat on it sideways.
"Sister Hu, it's not safe for you to sit like this. You have to sit astride." Dahua said.
"Oh, how can a woman sit astride? It's uncivilized. I'll just sit sideways. It's okay. I'll hold your waist and you'll be safe!"
Before he could finish his words, she pressed her entire chest against him and gave him a tight bear hug.
Dahua was so anxious that he felt like he was on fire. He really didn't have time to talk to her any more, so he could only let her go.
"Hey, Dahua, drive slower. Their house doesn't have legs. Look how I'm shaking. Ouch..."
As the motorcycle went uphill, Sister Hu was so scared that she hugged Dahua's waist tightly and pressed her soft chest against him.
As the motorcycle went downhill, Sister Hu became even more frightened. She clenched her hands tighter, and her face and chest rubbed against his back.
When they arrived at Li Dali's house, the door was closed. Dahua knocked hard, but no one answered.
"What's going on?" Dahua asked.
Sister Hu stood behind him with her arms folded, saying, "How should I know? I'm not even looking at him. I just said I'd go with you to find him. If he's at home, I'll talk to him and ask him about it. If there's no one around, there's nothing I can do!"
Dahua felt a lump in his chest and had no way to vent it, but she was right. It was not her fault that Li Dali was not at home!
"Oh, by the way, he came to me yesterday and asked me to pass something on to you. Look at my brain, I completely forgot it!"
"Then let's go back quickly!" Dahua hurriedly took Sister Hu back to the office.
It's almost dinner time now, and most people are not at home. I'm just wandering around getting ready to eat.
