Chapter 31 Selling Rabbits

Liang Dahua never thought that he would be able to do business one day.

In the end it was all thanks to this wild rabbit.

Dahua got up earlier than usual and, full of energy, went to the mountains to cut grass for the pigs, carrying a basket on his back. When he returned, it was still dark, but Qiuhua was already working hard.

Dahua came out of the pigsty and washed his hands at the well. Smoke billowed from the chimney. He walked to the fence to check on the rabbit. The little one was huddled in a corner, staring warily around.

"Dad is cooking?"

He walked into the room and found only Xiaohua and Chunhua still sleeping soundly.

"It's time to prepare it, go eat it quickly."

"Don't worry, I'll take a break."

Dahua sat down on a bench, saying he was going to take a break, but his hands couldn't stop working for a moment. He kept knocking on the dining table and looking at the legs of the bench.

"Brother, I see you can't sit still. Go eat and sell rabbits."

"Hey, I'm a little anxious. I want to sell it quickly so I can buy rice."

Dahua went to the stove to see that the porridge was ready. His father was pouring out bowls of it and leaving them to dry on the side. Dahua helped bring it to the table. Before he even sat down, he picked up the bowl and put his mouth close to it, slurping it up. The big mouthful burned his heart, and he quickly put the bowl down, beating his chest and stamping his feet in pain.

"Hey, slow down, why are you in such a hurry? It won't hurt to waste a little time. Your stomach is going to be burned!" Seeing how uncomfortable he looked, his father couldn't help but scold him.

Dahua was so hot that he couldn't speak. It took him a while to recover. He picked up his chopsticks and kept stirring the bowl, blowing into it from time to time.

"I'm in a hurry. I have to walk to the street after eating, which will probably take another hour. If it's late, there will be fewer people on the street, and I don't know if I can sell anything."

He blew on it and then picked up the bowl and took a small sip. It was still a little hot.

"If no one buys it, we can just eat it ourselves. Don't be impatient, take your time. You can't be so hasty when eating porridge. Be careful not to burn your lips."

Dad was right. Dahua felt a burning pain in his mouth all the way. He hurried to the street and sat down next to a vegetable vendor. He licked the roof of his mouth with his tongue and it felt astringent. It was obvious that his skin was burned.

People passing by would take a look at Dahua's rabbits, which were strong and looked quite plump. But even after dozens of people passed by, no one stopped to ask about them.

Dahua was a little anxious. Time was passing and he had to go to work in the team soon.

Just as he was thinking about whether to change places and find more people, he saw a man riding a bicycle with a large horizontal bar coming towards him from a distance. The vegetable vendors were also attracted by his attention. The man was wearing a clean Liberation Jacket, looked to be about fifty years old, and had a little girl following him.

The bicycle stopped in front of the vegetable street. Xiao Niangyu jumped off the back seat and walked slowly behind the bicycle. The vegetable vendors all greeted her, and it must be that one of them could make a business deal with her.

"Little lady, can you buy some vegetables? I grew them at home. Look, these vegetables are delicious!"

Xiao Niangyu bent down to take a look. The vegetables seemed a little wilted and not very fresh. She shook her head and continued to walk forward behind the bicycle.

"Do you want sweet potatoes? These yellow-heart sweet potatoes are incredibly delicious. Would you like to buy some?" The sweet potato seller had already weighed them. Neither the man pushing the bicycle nor the little fish objected, which meant they agreed to buy them.

The two weighed a lot of sweet potatoes, put them in a basket and hung it on the handle of the cart, and continued to move forward. The little girl had sharp eyes and saw Dahua and his rabbit.

"Hey, where did this rabbit come from? Is it raised at home?" The little fish spoke confidently, not timid at all.

Dahua, on the other hand, seemed a little petty, too embarrassed to look at others. He stared at the ground and said, "It's a wild rabbit, caught outside."

"Dad, let's buy this rabbit and raise it."

The man pushing the bicycle looked at the rabbit and disagreed: "This rabbit can't be kept alive. Why not buy it and kill it and roast it for meat?"

"I don't eat rabbit meat, I just want to raise it. Look how fun it is, Dad."

Little Niangyu begged, and her father relented a little, saying, "Do you really want to buy it? Can you raise it alive?"

He was talking to himself, but Dahua thought he was asking him a question and quickly replied, "Wild rabbits are probably hard to feed. It's better to roast them."

When Xiaoniangyu's father heard this, he couldn't help but look up and take a closer look at the honest young man selling rabbits.

"The young man is quite honest and doesn't talk nonsense, but this wild rabbit can't be kept alive!"

This made Xiao Niangyu anxious, and she hurriedly said, "If you can't keep it alive, then buy it back first. If you can't keep it alive, then cook it and eat the meat. You can eat it, but I won't."

Little Niangyu really wanted this rabbit. Her father thought about it and asked, "How much is this rabbit?"

"Give me five dollars."

Dahua had no idea how much a rabbit should be sold for. He felt that five dollars was a lot of money. But the uncle didn't bargain and just gave him the money. He immediately felt that he had suffered a loss.

But the words had been said and the money had been taken out, so Dahua had no choice but to accept the money honestly.

He held the rabbit's ears, tied it up with the straw rope he brought with him when he went out, and handed it to them. The uncle put the rabbit in the basket. The father and daughter looked at the rabbit, bought some vegetables, and rode away on their bicycles with satisfaction.

Although Dahua felt that he had lost out, he couldn't help but feel excited. He exchanged a wild rabbit for five yuan, and he was so happy! He took the money and immediately went to the grain store to buy rice.

It was already past noon when Dahua finished buying the rice. His stomach was growling with hunger. He carried the bag of rice and strode home quickly, thinking that maybe there would be something to eat at home.

But he was hungry and was in a hurry, so he felt tired before he had gone far. He happened to walk to a stone bridge not far from the market. There was a stone pier covered with moss. Dahua didn't care whether it was clean or dirty. He sat down and immediately felt more comfortable.

"Ding-ling-ling..."

A bell rang, and the father and daughter who bought the rabbit appeared on the other side of the river. It turned out that they were walking back after buying vegetables, but halfway through they remembered that their mother had asked them to buy rapeseed oil, so they turned back.

There were narrow roads on both sides of the river, and it was a bit muddy because it rained last night. The father and daughter, one riding a bicycle and the other sitting in a car, came here unsteadily. The steering wheel of the car was unstable and swayed from side to side. Unexpectedly, the front wheel sank into the mud. The cyclist exerted force with his hands, and the wheel came out, but the car lost control and rushed into the river with both of them.

Dahua stood up and ran to the river. The loud sound of falling into the water attracted several people, but no one came to rescue him. The uncle on the bike was relatively calm and must be able to swim. He held his daughter with one hand and splashed in the water with the other.

But the little mermaid was very frightened and was in a panic. She kicked and flapped her wings in the water, and the uncle was almost exhausted.

Dahua took off his clothes without saying a word and jumped down.
