July 7, 1985, the first day of the college entrance examination.
It was a hot day, and there were dozens of people in the examination room. The hot air was filled with the heat exhaled by everyone, and the temperature in the classroom seemed to be slowly rising.
The invigilator wiped the sweat from his forehead with his already damp hands, leaving his face covered with a greasy feeling.
She glanced around and could only see the dark tops of everyone's heads. All she could hear was the rustling sound of writing. She nodded slightly in satisfaction.
“Sizzle—”
Suddenly, a discordant voice came from behind.
As she walked, she looked back and the skinny student looked at her like a frightened bird.
It was already hot and my hands were sweating a lot. When I was writing, my hands rubbed against the paper, making it much more damp. If I made a mistake and rubbed it hard, a large piece of the paper would be torn.
For a moment, the rustling sounds in the examination room stopped a lot, and several pairs of eyes turned over.
"Do your own paper!" she shouted sternly, and everyone turned around again.
Wu Xin never stopped writing from beginning to end.
He was doing his homework in an orderly manner, and the outside world was isolated from him.
The little incident just now did not attract his attention.
Just after half the time had passed, someone turned the paper over, closed it on the table, put his head down and closed his eyes to rest.
The invigilator turned around and came back, knocking on the table in frustration.
The candidate turned over without raising his head.
There was still a quarter of an hour left, and several people in the examination room put down their pens.
The pen in Wu Xin's hand seemed to be waxed, and the tip of the pen slid rapidly across the test paper, occasionally stopping for a brief moment of thought.
This was the tenth time Qiuhua stood up and walked to the calendar.
There was a big "7" written on the calendar in front of her, and she turned two pages back.
"You've almost torn the calendar to pieces." Xiaojuan came back from outside holding Guoguo.
"If you're so worried, why don't you go to school and wait for him to come out?"
Qiuhua put down the calendar, took Guoguo and said, "He's fine. I'll wait for him at home."
Xiaojuan nodded and said, "Wu Xin will definitely have no problem with his studies, but this is a major event in life, wouldn't it be better to pick him up?"
Qiuhua blinked her big eyes. Guoguo kept struggling by shaking his chubby little legs, so she had no choice but to put the little guy down.
With five minutes left before the end of the exam, Wu Xin put down his pen and carefully looked over the test paper one last time.
When the bell rang for the end, the candidates breathed a sigh of relief.
There was no evening self-study during the exam period, and everyone stayed in the dormitory.
There are eight beds in the dormitory, but there are only six people living there.
During the three years of high school, one student left every year, and now there are only three people left, including Wu Xin.
One is the mayor's son, whose surname is Hu. He is much worse than Wu Xin in academic performance, but he has a cheerful and straightforward personality and is popular.
The other one is the last in the class, with the worst grades, poor personal hygiene, and is always crying.
Although no one said it on the surface during the exam, they were actually very nervous and couldn't concentrate on studying at all.
Sometimes someone in this dormitory shouts a line of a song, and sometimes someone in that dormitory recites a poem.
"Hey, Lao Hu, why do you always win?" The last one threw the cards in his hand on the table.
Student Hu proudly spread out the cards in his hand and showed them to him one by one.
The last one in the group was unconvinced and said: "If you do it again, you won't be so lucky next time."
"Come on, come on. No matter how many times you try, you won't win! You loser!"
Student Hu was shuffling the cards with a smile on his face, but when he looked up, he found that the last-place player had red eyes.
"Hey, hey, hey, what are you doing? Playing cards can make you cry. Are you a man? You have so many tears!"
He sniffed hard, holding back his tears, and said aggrievedly, "Who told you to call me the last one? Besides, I didn't do well on the test today, and I'm feeling really bad!"
"I'm sad that you don't read books and force me to play cards!"
"Then I won't play anymore!" The last guy pushed the cards aside and climbed onto the bed.
"Really not going to fight?"
“…”
"If you don't want to fight, then don't fight!"
Student Hu was not angry. He put away his cards and climbed onto Wu Xin's bed.
He pulled the book from Wu Xin's hand and said, "Stop reading. Aren't you tired of reading all day?"
"Not tired."
"Hey, let me ask you, are you really engaged?"
Wu Xin looked at him. This was the fourth time he asked himself this question.
He crossed his arms and asked, "Why, do you like Xie Wan?"
Student Hu pounded the bed helplessly and said, "Brother, my dear Brother Wu, the whole class knows that I like Xie Wan, and they also know that Xie Wan likes you. Why are you asking me this question now?"
"I've answered you three times, yes, I'm engaged."
Student Hu touched his chin and saw a little stubble. He hadn't had time to shave yet.
"Why do I just not believe it? You're a plaster statue, you can't even fart with a stick. You? Are you engaged so soon?
So, what's your partner's name?"
Wu Xin picked up the book and held it in front of him, saying, "No comment. But if you want to pursue Xie Wan, you can go ahead. I will definitely not be an obstacle to you."
"Why not? You're my biggest obstacle!"
“…”
"Don't look at it anymore. Let me ask you, do you know which school Xie Wan is going to apply to?"
Wu Xin put down the book in his hand, exposed his forehead and shook it.
Student Hu looked dejected.
"But she asked me last time if I wanted to apply to medical school."
"Medical school!" Hu's fighting spirit was rekindled, but the little flame soon waned again. "She still wants to be with you!"
"I've already told her clearly that I'm engaged and there's no possibility for us. Just let her go. You two are a perfect match."
Student Hu rubbed his head and grinned, "You make sense, haha!"
"I never thought that among all the students in our class, you, a cold-faced plaster statue, would be the first to get engaged."
The last one also squeezed over and said, "Hey, I also want to find a partner. Can you give me some advice?"
Wu Xin simply put the book down: "I don't know where the feelings come from, they just flow naturally."
"……What's the meaning?"
Student Hu slapped him on the head and cursed, "You're so clueless and still want to find a partner? You'll just stay single!"
"Why, why should I be single? Even he has a partner!"
As he spoke, his tone became tearful again.
"Alright, alright, first, you need to stop crying. Also, wash those socks that have been piling up on your bed for two months. Just these two bad habits of yours would make even the little mermaid shy away from you!"
The last one in the group pouted and didn't dare to cry anymore.
When I turned off the lights and was about to go to sleep, I heard rustling sounds coming from the bed next to me.
"You're the last one, eating in bed again! Do you still want those two rows of yellow teeth of yours?"
"I've made up my mind. I'm going to eat all this. I'm going to change my ways starting tomorrow!"
"Okay, okay, okay, keep your voice down, you have an exam tomorrow!"
“…”
The next morning at dawn, the last-place student got up from bed, gathered the smelly socks piled at the end of the bed, and took them outside to wash.
This is the second day of the college entrance examination.
