Chapter 364 Hubert Brand

The maids, whose foreheads bore the word "slave," bowed and retreated.

But his eyes were secretly fixed on the most gentlemanly duke in this overseas power, who rarely ordered his slaves around and never mistreated them.

For these upper-class people in the open sea, verbal abuse and whipping of slaves were daily ways to vent their frustrations. They were violent, yet they also enjoyed the mental relaxation that these slaves brought them.

Brand was a rare leader who did not mistreat slaves, so he not only had high prestige in the army, but also enjoyed goodwill among the slaves.

Although the slaves' goodwill was of no use to him, he always kept a bottom line for his own life. He had once crawled up from the ground, and he knew clearly that sometimes even an ant could cause fatal harm.

Therefore, he would think more carefully or be more tactful when dealing with people, which made the other dukes particularly dislike him, thinking that he was too pretentious or too petty.

The other dukes and earls were mostly from noble families. They were already nobles before the apocalypse, and even after the apocalypse, they wouldn't have easily switched sides if the king hadn't been so powerful and led his people to overthrow the previous dynasty.

Fortunately, after the defection, the new king still recognized their titles and did not strip them of them, but the contempt in their hearts remained.

Everyone knows that three of the five dukes today rose from humble beginnings, and even the king comes from a small family.

However, they dared not discuss it openly. As the saying goes, in the post-apocalyptic world, strength reigns supreme, the powerful rule the world, and the weak are subject to tyranny. These are the unchanging rules of time.

Aside from the country they had just entered, they heard that most of the common people here lived very comfortably. They imagined the pleasure of dragging these people down to the ground, making those who had once lived well serve them and become their slaves. This was exactly what every family of overseas powers wanted to do.

From the moment they stepped onto this continent and no one stopped them at the beach, they knew this was the perfect opportunity.

After conveying the king's arrangements, Brand returned to his residence, where he sat in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows, swirling the juice in his glass.

His skin was very fair, almost pale, with bright red lips, deep-set features, and slightly wavy golden hair, making him look like Cupid from ancient Greece.

He leaned back lazily in his chair, thinking about how he had disfigured his face with a sharp weapon to prevent the nobles from coveting it, how he had been born in a slave factory, and how he had often been touched on the face and buttocks as a child.

As he grew a little older, someone noticed his face and offered him a job as a magazine model with very generous pay. He was tempted, but he was still somewhat wary.

But he was forcibly taken to the car, and what happened in that car was a dark period he would never forget in his life.

When he was thrown off the bus like a rag doll, all he could remember were the faces of those people, because his gaze made them uncomfortable, and he almost had his eyes gouged out.

His beautiful golden eyes were once tried to be gouged out, but he quickly closed them and lowered his head, letting the people on top of him kick him again and again. He tightly hugged his head, hoping not to die and to live.

He always had this thought in his mind: don't give him a chance, otherwise he will take revenge on everything.

After his face was grabbed again, he used a sharp stone to slash his face until it was mangled. He remembered that when he was dragged to see the owner, the owner was almost scared to death.

He was beaten up again and thrown out. He lay on the ground for a long, long time, barely clinging to life, before he came to his senses.

He recalled a beautiful star he had once read about in the newspaper saying that beauty is not a sin, but the greatest gift from God.

Unfortunately, excessive beauty in a life at the bottom of society often leads to an accelerated death or various forms of abuse.

However, he didn't fully understand all of this until he was fifteen. After disfiguring his face, he returned to the depths of the underground black market to work, scavenge garbage, and do all sorts of dangerous jobs.

Because his face was disfigured and he was too ugly, he could only work and live in dark places for many years. He found a job washing dishes in the kitchens of gambling dens or restaurants. He would often sit in the innermost, darkest corner, constantly washing the leftover food and dishes.

His only real space was the tiny faucet at the very back; the rest of the area belonged to other staff members.

He was usually quiet and reserved. The wages here were among the lowest in the city; you didn't even dare to complain if people refused to pay you. This was the black market, the darkest place. He scavenged leftovers to barely fill his stomach. These were all gifts from his employers.

Until the world changed, people hid inside in fear, saying that there were monsters outside, and that many monsters would eat people, etc.

Even the dark corner where he usually stayed was crowded with people. He eventually got a headache and returned to his usual little corner, where he usually slept. It was just a narrow passage with a dilapidated iron door that was symbolically locked.

He was burning up until he heard people coming his way. He kicked open the dilapidated iron gate, and a group of people rushed in screaming.

Suddenly someone pointed at themselves and said, "There's someone here with a fever!"

If most people have this symptom, they will definitely turn into monsters in the outside world the next moment.

Or he might get lucky and become a superhero with superpowers, but those people sneered, "What superpowers could this little bastard have? Throw him out and feed him to the monsters outside, buy us time to run inside and hide."
