Chapter 231 Returning to China in Time
Lin Ruoyan actually had no recollection of what the meal was. She felt a little nauseous, probably because she was too nervous while rushing.
She could see that the president was in high spirits. Not only did he give a speech, he also performed songs and dances with the band. It was like entertaining guests at home, warmly entertaining people from all over the world in his own way.
The people sitting in the front circle were all of some status. They ate the food on their plates very cleanly and expressed their goodwill in high spirits.
Although the food was much simpler than one would imagine for a state banquet, perhaps even inferior to first-class airplane meals, and the weather outside was not cool, the overall atmosphere was lively.
The president was also very happy.
Lin Ruoyan took a couple of bites and thought it might be because the night air had turned hot and humid, so she had no appetite at all. Fortunately, her seat was in the back row, so few people noticed her lack of appetite.
After dinner, the Chinese were all assembled on a bus. This time, the bus was filled with Chinese nationals, including the counselor. He greeted some familiar business representatives and told them to head to the airport, where a chartered flight would be available to take them back to the capital overnight.
The counselor was accompanied by a secretary, who walked with him and distributed small fans. The car was old and the air conditioning wasn't very effective, so everyone fanned themselves. When he reached Lin Ruoyan, he paused and whispered, "Don't worry, President Lin. The threats along the way and in the capital have been resolved. However, those people have hired international assassins, so it's best for you to return via Country D."
After saying this, he left quickly without giving anyone a chance to ask further questions.
Lin Ruoyan asked Lu Wei softly: "Why do you want to go to Country D?"
Lu Wei was initially puzzled. From a safety perspective, returning home via Europe was definitely safer than flying across the Pacific from America, but why choose Country D over Country F? After a moment's reflection, Lu Wei suddenly said, "Perhaps Country D has other arrangements in place for them. Even if there are assassins, they're nothing to fear."
Lin Ruoyan no longer questioned it. She was very tired. The car window could not be opened. The heat in the car was getting hotter and hotter, and she felt drowsy.
Lu Wei looked around for her comrade who wasn't on the bus and took out her phone to send the code. This phone was the one she used locally, and it had the contact information for the embassy and some local contacts added. Her comrade had been transferred to the embassy to handle security, and since he wasn't on the bus, he was likely making arrangements along the way or handling a problem somewhere else.
The bus soon arrived at the civilian airport in Province B. It was already approaching midnight. No one had chosen to stay in Province B. Firstly, the trip from the capital had been so sudden that most people hadn't brought a change of clothes. Secondly, everyone vaguely felt that returning to their familiar hotels would be safer.
The embassy reportedly arranged a flight for the return to the capital, with all the Chinese nationals on board, flying back to the capital together that evening. The airport there also arranged for a pick-up to ensure everyone returned to their hotel in a timely manner.
Lin Ruoyan felt very tired after all the trouble in coming to the president's hometown to have a meal. When she got off the bus, she suddenly felt a little dizzy, which was rare for her.
She had never been prone to motion sickness, nor did she find the local weather hot and humid. She thought she might have been on planes and cars for too long recently, and didn't take it personally. However, the discomfort she felt made her reluctant to continue flying.
She has a project in Province B. Although Chen Jun is currently still handling the formalities in the capital, Province B has already set up a campsite, and she can spend the night in her own small campsite.
The embassy representative urged, "Let's go together. I heard we have other activities tomorrow in the capital. If we don't take the charter flight today, we won't know when we'll be able to get back to the capital by taking a regular flight tomorrow."
Lu Wei glanced at the message her comrade replied and nodded slightly.
Lin Ruoyan knew Lu Wei had confirmed the route back to the capital was safe, so she gritted her teeth and insisted on boarding the charter flight. At least the entire plane was full of Chinese nationals, so everyone could look after each other. If she were left alone in Province B, she might be targeted again if she left tomorrow.
It was already early morning when she arrived in the capital, and she developed a fever as soon as she returned to the hotel.
Lu Wei took out the various medicines she had brought from China, but she first used physical cooling. After a careful examination, she found a faint red spot on Lin Ruoyan's arm that looked like a mosquito bite. She cautiously took a photo and emailed it to an expert she knew who was proficient in this area of analysis. She also called her that night to inquire about the situation.
The specialist said this wasn't a mosquito bite, but a needle infection, and that they couldn't rule out the possibility of poisoning. Based on Lu Wei's symptoms, they recommended anti-infective medication.
At this time, Lin Ruoyan was already a little confused due to the fever and kept talking in her sleep.
Lu Wei didn't choose the hospital that matched the hotel. Instead, she asked Chen Jun to drive her. She carried Lin Ruoyan and drove to the embassy overnight. The embassy had a special medical team, using special drugs brought from China. Lu Wei called an old comrade to explain the situation, which was how this special arrangement was made.
When Lin Ruoyan woke up again, she realized that she was in an unfamiliar ward.
She lay on a single bed in the room, surrounded by monitoring equipment. As soon as she opened her eyes, medical staff knocked on the door and came in to check on her. They were all Chinese, speaking a language she could understand.
The nurse said that the family had been notified, and Lu Wei entered the room a few minutes later.
Lin Ruoyan noticed that Lu Wei hadn't changed her clothes. She was still wearing the same clothes she wore when she returned from Province B that day. She looked very haggard. She asked, "Where is this?"
"Shanghai," Lu Wei said. "You fainted shortly after arriving at the embassy that day. They handled the situation correctly, confirming you were most likely poisoned, not infected by a mosquito bite. So, we took the nearest flight through Country D to Shanghai. The flight to Beijing was ten hours late, and we were afraid we'd be too late."
The doctor said, "The toxins have been basically cleared. Fortunately, you arrived in time. If you had been later, there would have been other sequelae."
“What will be the aftereffects?”
The doctor said nothing.
Lin Ruoyan guessed that perhaps the doctor was not authorized, or perhaps the situation was not as serious as she thought. But fortunately, she had woken up and felt much better after sleeping for so long.
Some of the monitoring equipment in Lin Ruoyan's ward was removed, so Lu Wei could stay here to accompany her for a longer period of time.
Lin Ruoyan said: "You go and rest, I'm fine."
Lu Wei said, "I've already contacted my company, and they'll send someone to relieve me. I'll rest after they arrive. Boss Lin, that sneak attack and poisoning method was so covert that even I didn't detect it. I'm sorry, I failed in my duty. Although we've returned to China, the threat of international assassins still exists."
Lin Ruoyan asked again: "Do my brother and my son know my specific situation?"
Lu Wei said, "The antidote you were injected with was newly developed, and we had to get President Dalin's approval over the phone before we could use it. Mengxi only knew that you were sick and returned to China, and we didn't tell him the details."
