Chapter 14 Supply and Marketing Cooperatives

Lin Qing returned to the educated youth settlement, ate the remaining porridge, and then headed towards the commune.

When I passed by Liu the carpenter's house, I bought a basket from him and carried it on my back.

It takes more than two hours to walk from Chaoyang Brigade to Shengli Commune.

The oxcart had already gone to the commune that morning, so Lin Qing had to walk there by herself.

At this moment, Lin Qing especially missed the transportation of the 21st century, and it seemed that bicycles were also imminent.

Lin Qing planned to check if they had any bicycles at the supply and marketing cooperative. Although buying a bicycle at this time would be a bit conspicuous, she couldn't just compromise herself to avoid trouble! Besides, she had the system's protection; if she was careful, there shouldn't be any problems.

Just when Lin Qing was about to despair, they arrived at Victory Commune.

Lin Qing first went to the post office to call her parents to let them know she was safe, and then went to the supply and marketing cooperative.

Upon entering the supply and marketing cooperative, one is greeted by a small building made of red bricks, which resembles the architectural style of the Republic of China era.

The top of the small building appears to be modeled after Gothic architecture from the Republican era, yet it also possesses an oriental charm. A large five-pointed star is carved in the center, flanked by circular openings made of gray tiles. A stone plaque is inlaid below the star. The five large characters "Victory Supply and Marketing Cooperative" are carved from left to right.

The small building's load-bearing structure is made of blue bricks, with a thousand pounds of weight pressing down on the two lowest brick pillars. The two large doors, made of wooden planks, are open outwards.

Stepping into the supply and marketing cooperative, the aroma of soy sauce and brown sugar fills the air. Rows of clean and tidy counters come into view. Behind each counter is a banner that reads: "Serve the people; combine education with production."

They have everything here, from large agricultural machinery and electrical appliances to small items like needles, thread, and buttons. From daily necessities to agricultural supplies, from pots and pans to fabrics and grains. And the counters are filled with colorful candies, all kinds of snacks, and cigarettes and alcohol.

The supply and marketing cooperatives were like a magician's treasure chest, offering everything one could possibly need.

Unfortunately, there was no bicycle that Lin Qing had been longing for, nor any valuables such as a watch or radio.

Lin Qing squeezed through the crowded people to the counter, where she bought two flashlights, a thermos, and some steamed cakes, biscuits, and other food items.

Finally, they arrived at the fabric counter and bought 20 feet of army green fabric and 20 feet of blue fabric. Lin Qing didn't know how much fabric she would need to make a suit. She seemed to have seen online that it would take about ten feet. To be on the safe side, she decided to buy 20 feet.

Lin Qing had never bought fabric before and didn't know how much to buy. He wanted to buy two outfits for Gu Nanxun, but there were no ready-made clothes for sale here, so he had no choice but to buy fabric and have it made.

After buying the items, Lin Qing left the supply and marketing cooperative.

Lin Qing found a secluded spot and entered the space, where she found a military green quilt and mattress. She also took out the kitchen utensils, pots, pans, and other kitchenware that the system had rewarded her with, and packed them together with some daily necessities. In addition, she took some emergency medications. She then ate dinner in the space, finally taking two servings of braised pork, one serving of stewed meatballs, and a bowl of rice.

Once outside the space, Lin Qing put the little creature into her basket, along with the food she had prepared. Then she packed the quilt and mattress, making it look like they had been mailed from the post office.

Finally, Lin Qing spent 1 yuan to find an oxcart, which drove directly to Gu Nanxun's house.

"Clap clap clap..."

"Comrade Gu, may I come in?"

"Come in, Lin, the educated youth."

Since Lin Qing left, Gu Nanxun had looked towards the door more than once. On this hot afternoon, he suddenly had someone he was looking forward to.

Lin Qing went into the house, put the basket on the ground, and then put the quilt and mattress on Gu Nanxun's bed.

"Comrade Gu, these are the quilts and mattresses I sent from home. They are all new and unused. I don't need them right now, so you can use them for now."

“I also bought you two bolts of cloth, one green and one blue. Tomorrow I’ll ask an aunt in the village who knows how to sew to make you two outfits.”

"There are also some daily necessities that you need right now..."

Lin Qing was busy as soon as she entered the house, her little mouth chattering nonstop! She had been running around all afternoon, and her cheeks were flushed red from the sun, making her especially adorable.

"Lin Zhiqing, why are you so good to me?"

Gu Nanxun pinched his palm with his fingernail and asked nervously.

Since returning home with both legs crippled, even his own family stopped caring for him, but he never expected to feel warmth from a fellow educated youth he had never met.

“Both of my older brothers are soldiers. I have always admired and respected soldiers since I was a child. Besides, you have given me too much money for medical expenses. I can’t just take so much money from you for nothing. Let me take care of you for a while. I am a doctor, so it is only right for me to take care of you.”

"Then I'll have to trouble you, Xiao Lin. If you don't have enough money, just tell me. You should know I still have money; I'm not short of it."

"If you want anything, you can tell me. I have a comrade who works in the county town. If you need anything, I can ask him to get it for you."

Although it wasn't right to trouble a young girl like this, Gu Nanxun couldn't help but want to get closer to her.

I need to be careful not to tarnish the girl's reputation.

It's all because of my bad legs. Thinking of this, Gu Nanxun couldn't help but feel sad.

“If you take such good care of me, the villagers will gossip, and it won’t be good for your reputation.”

Gu Nanxun said worriedly. He was very conflicted. On one hand, he wanted to get close to Lin Qing, but on the other hand, he was afraid that he would damage Lin Qing's reputation.

“It’s okay. I just told you that you are my brother’s comrade-in-arms and that my brother asked me to take care of you.”

Gu Nanxun felt selfish. He knew it wouldn't be good for the girl's reputation, but he couldn't bear to give up that little bit of warmth. Thinking of this, he couldn't help but feel depressed.

"By the way, Comrade Gu, I asked Uncle Carpenter to build a stove for you outside the door. There are too many people at the educated youth settlement, so it's not convenient for me to cook. Also, my tastes are different from theirs, so I don't want to eat with them. Can I cook here for you while my house is still under construction? Of course, as a token of my gratitude, I'll take care of your meals until your leg heals."

Seeing that Gu Nanxun was a little down, Lin Qing quickly changed the subject.

"Can my leg really get better?" Gu Nanxun couldn't help but ask, having heard the little girl say more than once that her leg could be healed. If only his leg could be healed, he could protect the little girl.

"Of course, you have to trust my medical skills. The reason your leg is bad is because the cells and nerves are damaged. As long as I give you acupuncture, I can activate the cells and treat the damaged nerves. So don't worry, your leg will definitely get better, it's just that the time is uncertain."
