Chapter 4 Job Change

Once outside the residential building, the infected person who had been blocking the entrance had disappeared.

Liu Nian cautiously peered out along the corner of the wall. Sure enough, most of the infected people were attracted by the distant broadcast and circled around the telephone pole below.

"Luckily, my residence isn't on that road, otherwise it would have been quite a thrill."

Despite his feelings, taking advantage of the fact that the infected person wasn't paying attention, Liu Nian quickly slipped into the alley across the street.

Before long, they returned to the intersection they had passed before. The infected people who had surrounded the intersection had long since disappeared, leaving only a skeleton on the ground.

The broadcasts are no longer heard here; instead, the occasional roars of the infected have replaced them.

Several infected individuals were scattered haphazardly on the street.

As darkness fell, the rustling of the wind and grass around the alley inexplicably made Liu Nian feel terrified, and he couldn't help but think of the remains at the alley entrance.

"Hang in there, we'll be there once we cross this street," Liu Nian encouraged herself.

As Liu Nian tiptoed out of the alley, the gentle breeze that greeted her gave her goosebumps.

"Wind? Wind! Oh no..." Liu Nian thought to himself, "This is bad."

Sure enough, before Liu Nian finished speaking, the infected person downwind on the street turned to look in their direction.

"Roar roar roar..." Unfortunately, some of the infected spotted Liu Nian and roared as they ran towards him.

The sound instantly triggered a chain reaction, and the infected people upstream on the street also looked in this direction, following the sound.

Infected individuals also emerged from the buildings across the alley and joined the infected individuals on the street.

"We're doomed." Liu Nian said with a wry smile as he looked at the infected people rushing towards him down the street.

Despite the talk, we still have to run.

Originally, I planned to turn around and run back into the alley, but things didn't go as planned. Several infected people appeared from the corner of the alley and blocked my way back.

"This is what an ambush from all sides looks like. Is Heaven trying to kill me?" Liu Nian said dejectedly.

Unwilling to give up, Liu Nian tried to find a glimmer of hope, and the office building not far across the street caught her attention.

That is currently the only building where no infected individuals have been found.

"No time to hesitate, let's take a gamble." Liu Nian ran towards the Gaslight Building across the street.

The once peaceful street was instantly shattered by the roars of the infected, and countless infected surged toward Liu Nian like a tide.

After shaking off an infected person who tried to pounce on her, Liu Nian successfully entered the building before a large group of infected people could block her way.

Without stopping, the sound of shattering glass followed closely behind as the infected people quickly broke through the glass door behind them.

Hearing the noise behind her, Liu Nian ran even faster.

Inside the lobby, Liu Nian looked up at the green sign in the center of the lobby; the stairwell was on the right.

Liu Nian dared not take the elevator; it would be troublesome if a scene from Resident Evil happened, and the infected behind it wouldn't give him time to wait for the elevator.

Liu Nian could only blindly run towards the stairwell on the right.

Clang

Pushing aside the obstructing spring door, ignoring the pain in her shoulder, Liu Nian ran up the stairs without stopping.

I silently prayed to God that I wouldn't encounter any more infected people in the stairwell.

The infected people behind him followed the sound into the stairwell, desperately chasing after Liu Nian in front of them.

Ignoring the constant, heaving breaths, this was a battle against death; a moment's slowness would mean being devoured.

First floor, second floor, third floor, I don't know how many floors I climbed.

Finally, before I ran out of energy, I saw the iron gate leading to the rooftop.

Lady Luck finally smiled upon Liu Nian; the iron gate to the rooftop was unlocked and had a handle that pulled inwards.

"bump"

Perhaps the finish line was in sight, Liu Nian exerted force with his feet again, quickly pulled open the iron gate, and closed the rooftop door before the infected could catch up.

The infected people behind him watched helplessly as Liu Nian disappeared from sight, and unable to stop themselves, they all crashed into the iron gate, blocking its position.

Upon entering the rooftop, Liu Nian cautiously looked around; no one was there.

After confirming that the infected person was not yet capable of breaking through the iron gate, Liu Nian finally felt relieved.

His legs suddenly gave way, and he slid helplessly under the iron gate. His chest heaved violently, and his rapid breathing made his lungs burn with pain. His legs felt as heavy as lead, and he couldn't lift them.

He raised his sleeve to wipe the sweat from his forehead and realized that his clothes were already soaked with sweat during the chase and were clinging to his skin.

After a long while, feeling that he had regained some strength, Liu Nian slowly stood up.

By then it was completely dark. With the help of the dim light of the streetlights, looking out from the rooftop, the entire city seemed to be shrouded in darkness.

Every now and then, a burst of light would erupt somewhere in the city, leaving only scattered lights shining throughout the entire city.

"I wonder when the power system will collapse? Will things get even harder in the future?"

He shook his head, banishing the thought from his mind; a person whose future is uncertain has no right to think about the future.

It's more practical to think about how to spend the night first.

Although it was the height of summer, the temperature was still a bit low at night. A gust of night wind blew by, and Liu Nian couldn't help but shiver.

"This is bad, I'll catch a cold sooner or later if this continues," Liu Nian thought.

The rooftop is a rectangular building, with only the iron gate at the entrance and the railing along the edges.

"There's not even a place to block the wind. I wonder if they'll survive the infected attacks and eventually starve to death on this rooftop."

Just as Liu Nian was about to find a place to rest, a rectangular box in the center of the rooftop caught her attention.

"Could it be that you're seeing things?"

Liu Nian took out her phone, walked to the box, and used the dim light of her flashlight to examine the box.

To be precise, it's a box, bright yellow metallic, with no patterns on the surface, about the size of a computer case.

Just as Liu Nian curiously reached out and touched the box, a clear female voice echoed in his mind: "Opening the golden treasure chest."

Before she could finish speaking, Liu Nian was horrified to discover that she had lost control of her body.

By the time they came to their senses, the treasure chest had already vanished.

Just when I thought it was my imagination, a card lay quietly in my outstretched palm.

"Elementary Job Change Certificate," Liu Nian read the words on the card aloud.

After the reading was finished, the eerie female voice came again: "Would you like to change jobs?"

Ignoring the strangeness, Liu Nian answered, "Yes."

"Analyzing player physical attributes..."

"Character panel is being generated..."

Player: Liu Nian Race: Human

Strength: 4 (normal adult male value is 5)

Agility: 4 (normal adult male value is 5)

Intelligence: 6 (normal adult male value is 5)

Mental state: 7 (normal adult male value is 5)

Physical fitness: 4 (normal adult male value is 5)

After the panel was generated, the card in Liu Nian's hand turned into a wisp of green smoke and disappeared without a trace.

Liu Nian's character panel was instantly filled with all sorts of job descriptions.

Unfortunately, Liu Nian's physical condition does not meet the requirements for most career transitions.

Suddenly, Liu Nian's eyes lit up. Looking at the familiar job description, wasn't this the perfect fit for her?

Then I decisively clicked the job change button on the panel.

"Once you change jobs, you cannot change them again. Do you want to confirm your employment in this profession?"

"yes"

As the panel disappeared, a flood of unfamiliar knowledge instantly filled Liu Nian's mind.

As if pricked by countless needles, Liu Nian felt like his head was about to explode, and his body's protective system began to activate.

Liu Nian's vision went black, and she fainted.
