Chapter 255 The Mage's Trial (Part 4) tushumi.cc

Liu Nian wanted to push forward as much as possible and avoid standing on low ground.

We're currently halfway up a high mountain, and it feels like being stuck in this awkward position is not conducive to troop deployment.

Ranged units are easy to deal with; simply place them on the small mound where the enemy's ranged units were standing, with them positioned on either side.

The melee troops were divided into three small squares, which were arranged in front of the ranged troops.

This place is no longer a swamp, and the extremely annoying terrain debuff is no longer on the panel, which made him breathe a sigh of relief.

But the distinctive sound of footsteps on muddy ground approaching from afar made Liu Nian a little nervous.

The troops in the fog on the other side were getting closer and closer, and finally the vanguard appeared in Liu Nian's field of vision.

These are a group of undead lizardmen. It's easy to tell they're undead; you can tell from their broken bodies and lifeless eyes.

As for the lizardmen? Liu Nian had to observe them carefully for a long time before he could tell.

Leading the way was a group of heavily armored units wearing rotten iron armor and wielding broken shields or decaying decapitation blades, which were crammed together in a staggered formation to form the front line.

One after another, lizardmen carrying bows and arrows emerged from the mist. They wore tattered leather armor but no helmets.

Looking further ahead, Liu Nian could not see anything; the fog blocked his view.

What is certain now is that the opposite side is also a dense, dark mass, roughly the same number as Liu Nian's troops, about a hundred strong.

Liu Nian was somewhat relieved to not see any cloth armor or light armor units, as there were no mage-type units among them.

Hopefully, no more units will appear inside the fog; I can't handle any more.

The raven seemed to hear Liu Nian's inner cry and warned him with its cries that there were no other units following.

Just as I was starting to relax, another lizardman emerged from the mist.

Standing nearly two meters tall, it was a size larger than the other lizardmen, and its heavy armor was thicker and more complete than that of the other units. Wearing a masked iron helmet, Liu Nian could not see its face. Holding two one-handed swords, it slowly walked to the center of the lizardmen formation.

It seems to have some command capabilities. After its arrival, the enemy's entire formation became more complete, unlike the previous disorganized formation.

As for information about the other side, Liu Nian couldn't gather any of it. Their level was above level five; he only knew the names of their powers.

Liu Nian did not launch a rash attack; with more people on the other side, he could only adopt a defensive posture.

The opposing team adopted conventional tactics, with a row of melee classes in the front and a row of archers in the back.

A row of shield guards and a row of swordsmen advanced in the front.

Liu Nian's formation was divided into six small squares, with the ghoul legion in the center of the front row and skeleton warriors on both sides.

Archers and mages stood on the earthen slopes on both sides of the back row, while Liu Nian, Tiffany, and the rest of the mixed troops were in the middle.

As for the flying units, Liu Nian concealed them in the mist, where they could be used as surprise attacks to disrupt the enemy's ranged units.

In battle between two armies, it is customary for long-range forces to fire several volleys first.

Since they are all undead units, the hit rate of ranged units is just so-so.

Liu Nian's side clearly had more ranged classes than the enemy's. The flag bearer designated an area for them to gather and fire, trying to cripple a portion of the troops before engaging in close combat.

The opposing archers were fewer in number but elite; their arrows dealt more damage than Liu Nian's archers, but not ridiculously so, and remained within Liu Nian's acceptable range.

After all, with such a large number of them, it's impossible for them to have high damage output. How would other classes even be able to compete?

They were also clever, bypassing the skeleton warriors with damage reduction and directly shooting at Liu Nian's front-line ghoul legion.

Even with their thick skin and tough flesh, ghouls were no match for elite archers, and after several rounds of fire, they began to suffer casualties.

Seeing that the enemy's mid-section was beginning to suffer losses, the opposing lizardman general launched an attack.

The mixed force of shield bearers and swordsmen in the front row began to advance despite the rain of arrows overhead.

The skeleton archers' arrows were deflected by the shield guards' heavy shields, and even when an archer occasionally hit a dual-wielding undead lizardman, there were no immediate casualties.

Eleven skeleton mages actually dealt more damage than archers. Undead units have almost no magic resistance, except for high shadow resistance.

During the approach, various melee units from both sides fell from time to time.

Meanwhile, as Liu Nian watched their front and back rows spread out further and further, he quietly directed his flying units to flank and harass the enemy's ranged units.

At the same time, the three square formations in the front row advanced simultaneously, while the skeleton warriors on the left and right flanks circled around to flank the ranged classes in the rear.

The downside is the dispersed troop strength, but the upside is flexibility.

If you split your forces, the front line formation will be disrupted; if you don't split your forces, one of the back lines will always be breached by me.

Seeing that the skeleton warriors on both flanks had already circled around the halfway point and were rushing towards the original assembly point, and that the enemy had not yet reacted, Liu Nian was secretly pleased.

Both Tiffany and Liu Nian, the two mages, were powerless against undead units. The damage caused by Death Cloud was limited, and Death Ripple was completely ineffective.

They can only use bone spears for single-target damage, which is pathetic.

The lizardman general opposite him watched Liu Nian pull this stunt and carefully considered his countermeasures.

Should we split up to deal with his melee units? Or should we work together to take down the ghoul army first, and then break through the ranged classes in the back row?

Before he could figure it out, a commotion broke out among the lizard archers in one corner, and a squad of transparent ghosts, accompanied by a beautiful black shadow, had already arrived.

The number of them was limited, so the unrest they caused was also limited. Moreover, the rear ranks were not entirely unprepared, and several squads of melee lizardmen began to move towards the area where the disturbance was taking place.

However, they are not very useful. Ghosts ignore collision volume and can freely insert themselves into ranged teams. Vampires are also flying units and can attack without landing.

This put the surrounding melee lizardmen in a dilemma: if they tried to get in, their formation would be disrupted; if they didn't, the lizardmen would stick to them like glue.

If you leave it alone, it's quite painful for six flying units to focus their attacks on a single ranged unit.

Ignoring them, the surrounding lizardmen pulled out daggers, short swords, and other melee weapons to attack them, but many of their attacks were nullified.

They even watched helplessly as their daggers pierced through the bodies of ghosts and plunged into their teammates.

As for vampires, they are even more troublesome. Either the attack misses, or after hitting them, they instantly absorb the soul fire from the archer's eyes, and the damage to their body is instantly restored.

What to do? The lizardman general scratched his head in distress, only to touch the cold metal.

Awkward, I've been dead for so long I forgot I'm wearing a suit of iron armor.

Ultimately, it decided to ignore the ranged units, prioritize killing the ghoul legion, then wipe out the enemy's backline units, and finally capture that wretched necromancer. Once he was dead, all the undead units would disappear.

After engaging the enemy, the ghoul legion was slowly surrounded by the opposing lizardman legion. Even though they had been enhanced, they were no match for the elite lizardmen.

Lizardman shield guards deal average damage, but lizardmen wielding dual swords deal very high damage and are adept at combo attacks; usually, a ghoul can be taken down in just a few strikes.

Ordinary ghouls can only withstand one round of attacks, while elite legion ghouls can barely withstand two rounds.

In the time it takes to drink a cup of tea, the ghoul army had already been decimated.

The lizardman general was very satisfied with the result. He separated a group of melee classes to hunt down the remaining ghouls, while directing the other melee units to continue advancing.

The enemy's ranged units only dealt a little damage to the shield, no big deal, it thought smugly.

The skeleton warriors on both flanks had completely shaken off the melee lizardmen in the front row and began to engage the melee classes guarding the ranged lizardmen.

Now it's a battle of who can break down the opponent's ranged classes first, and whoever does so will win the fight.
