Chapter 24 Nobody

Through observation, Liu Nian discovered that even if the skeleton didn't kill the infected at this stage, it could still successfully sever parts such as the infected's arms with a single strike, thus rendering the infected unable to fight.

Level 2 ghouls are even more terrifying, eating while fighting. Although they can be attacked by infected, their own skin blocks the attacks. Moreover, since they are undead, they cannot be infected by the virus carried by infected.

Amidst the roars and screams that echoed around him, Liu Nian diligently slaughtered the infected swarming around the edge of the truck bed. The mage's fragile physique meant he was relegated to a support role; in this one-sided massacre, the two ghouls were the main force, each capable of crushing an infected's head with a single claw. Next came the skeletons; they were immune to the infected's attacks but could attack them. Although also a necromancer, Tiffany was practically slacking off the entire time, truly the queen of procrastination.

The system notifications continued to sound, and the number of infected around the vehicle dwindled with each hit. After piercing the eye socket of another infected, the battle came to an end.

Jumping off the truck bed, Liu Nian felt a slippery sensation under her feet, as if she had stepped into a patch of mud. After taking only a few steps, her foot slipped, and she almost fell on the carpet covered with the remains of infected people.

The remains of the infected in the front row had become deformed and twisted from being trampled on by the infected behind them. Liu Nian had accidentally stepped on the tissue and organs of an infected person. Although they were already immune to these scenes, moving these corpses to find the fallen cards was still quite dramatic.

Perhaps as compensation for Liu Nian, there were actually two cards this time.

Finally, Liu Nian had the armor he had been dreaming of, and he instantly materialized the card.

A suit of armor made entirely of bone appeared in Liu Nian's hands. It was quite heavy, and he couldn't even hold it in one hand. The armor had distinct joints, and it felt rough to the touch, making his hand sting.

I awkwardly put on the armor, stretched my arms, and took a couple of steps. It was a bit heavy, but at least I felt safe.

Once the initial excitement wore off, Tiffany finally had enough magic points to fully restore the skeleton's health. Liu Nian then walked back down the street.

"Run? Go ahead and run again!" a rude voice rang out.

The camera pans to a woman running ahead, followed by three men. The words just spoken were from one of the men.

Judging from the large beads of sweat on the woman's forehead, she had clearly run a long distance. Her face was covered in a dark stain, obscuring her features. Her clothes, soaked with sweat, outlined the woman's graceful figure.

The men behind him were less chasing and more teasing, playing with him at a leisurely pace, like cats catching mice.

The leader was a bald man in his thirties; he was the one who had spoken, and his mouthful of yellowed teeth, stained from smoking, was visible. He wore a floral shirt, jeans, and sneakers. The other two looked to be in their twenties; one had a pointed, monkey-like face, and the other had a face full of menacing features—they looked like villains from a movie.

"Xiaohan, why are you doing this to yourself? Wouldn't it be better to follow me and live a life of luxury? Otherwise, once I win you over, I'll show you what I'm capable of." The bald man said with a lewd grin.

“That’s right, that’s right. It’s your good fortune that Brother Ma has taken a liking to you. Don’t be ungrateful,” the man with the pointed mouth and monkey-like cheeks chimed in.

"You have food and drink to eat, something others would beg for. Don't be ungrateful," the chubby man with the discount said, not wanting to be outdone.

The woman named Xiaohan, who was running ahead, remained unmoved and ran even faster.

Seeing the woman's lack of understanding, the bald man named Brother Ma became furious and ran off like the wind. His two henchmen exchanged a glance and quickened their pace to follow.

As they chased and fled, Xiaohan saw the man getting closer and closer. In her panic, she stumbled and fell to the ground.

When Ma saw Xiaohan fall, he ran to her without stopping and reached out to grab her.

Recalling her harrowing ordeal after being arrested, Xiaohan was filled with terror and cried out, "Help!"

Brother Ma grabbed the woman's hair, pulled her up, and started walking back, laughing loudly, "Go ahead and scream, no one will come to save you no matter how loud you scream."

The other two henchmen ran to Brother Ma's side, one on each side, and pulled Xiaohan back.

"To abduct a woman in broad daylight? What kind of show is this?" a voice came from behind the crowd.

Upon hearing this, Brother Ma looked behind him and saw a man wearing strange armor and holding a spear walking out of the street corner toward the crowd.

The person who came was Liu Nian. When he approached the street, he heard cries for help and thought that someone was being chased by infected people and was calling for help. Based on the principle of saving as many people as possible, he quickly came to check.

As a level 5 Novice, Brother Ma had killed hundreds of infected, yet all he possessed was a kukri. He naturally knew that the man before him was also a Novice. Although his level was unclear, the drop rate of cards was well-known. Having one card in his hand and another on his person meant he was either a high-level player or a lucky Novice. Neither of them was someone Brother Ma could afford to offend.

It has to be said that you can't judge a book by its cover. This Brother Ma is quite a character; he came up with an idea in the blink of an eye.

“Friend, it’s not what you see. Her family owes me a lot of goods, and her mother voluntarily married her off to me as my wife to pay off the debt. I have a written agreement.” Brother Ma pointed at Xiaohan and said to Liu Nian.

“What he said isn’t true. My mom was forced to sign it, so it’s not true. Besides, I’ve already paid back what I owed him. But they’re like vampires, with interest compounding, so we can never pay it all back,” Xiaohan argued loudly, looking at the man in front of her.

Watching the two arguing, Liu Nian couldn't tell what was true or false for a moment. After thinking for a moment, she interrupted them and asked, "What do you owe him?"

"Three catties of rice."

"How much has been repaid?"

“Five pounds of potatoes, a carton of milk, six cans of fish, ten pounds of rice, and we still owe him six pounds of rice. My family had nothing to eat, so they made my mom sign the papers.” Xiaohan cried uncontrollably as she recalled the past.

Is she telling the truth?

"How could that be?" Perhaps lacking confidence, Brother Ma felt a moment of unease.

Liu Nian understood and said to the bald man, "Tear up the IOU, and let's pretend it never happened and call it even, okay?"

"Alright, since you've asked, brother, I'll give you face." He spoke with magnanimity, but the expression on his face as he tore up the IOU betrayed him.

After confirming that the IOU was correct, Liu Nian remained silent.

After releasing Xiaohan's wrist, the bald man glanced at Liu Nian and said, "Is this okay?"

Liu Nian nodded.

The IOU was torn into tiny pieces and flew in the wind. Bald Ma gave Liu Nian a deep look, but ultimately said nothing. He then said to his men, "Let's go."

Xiaohan rubbed her wrist, which had been gripped so hard, and stepped forward to say to Liu Nian, "Thank you."

Once Liu Nian was sure that Brother Ma and his group had gone far away and said nothing more, she turned and left.

A voice came from behind: "Can you tell me your name? My name is Ye Xiaohan."

Liu Nian turned her head and glanced at Ye Xiaohan: "Nobody's here."

Having said that, he disappeared around the corner without waiting for a reply.
