Chapter 11 Youthful Vigor

Yu Yao turned around and saw Tianya and her grandmother.

Hu Lingyu's eyes were still red. She looked to be in her forties, with fair skin, a tall stature, and short, ear-length hair. She looked elegant and gentle.

Looking at her, Yu Yao inexplicably thought of the saying: Time cannot defeat beauty.

Especially her phoenix eyes gave her a sense of déjà vu.

But upon closer examination, there were no clues.

Such beautiful eyes, if she had seen them before, she would find it hard to forget them; perhaps she had seen them in the original owner's memories.

Yu Yao shook off the jumbled thoughts in her head and asked疑惑地问道, "Comrade, is there something you need?"

Hu Lingyu, holding Tianya's hand, smiled and said, "Thank you for saving Tianya earlier. It's almost noon, and the state-run restaurant is nearby. I'd like to treat you to a meal."

These days, resources are scarce, and everyone is struggling. Eating out requires both money and coupons, so treating someone to a meal is considered a respectable way to express gratitude.

"Comrade, saving someone is just a small favor, there's no need to thank me." Yesterday, when she saw Director Yu off, she asked her to help her ask the brigade secretary for half a day off.

After finishing my business, I'll rush back; at least I can earn some work points in the afternoon.

"No way! You're Sweetie's savior. How can I let you leave without even having a meal? No way!"

"Auntie, thank you for the invitation, but there's really no need for a meal. Actually, I only took half a day off. I still have to go to the fields this afternoon to earn work points, so going there now will allow me to catch the oxcart back to the brigade."

After hearing what Yu Yao said, Hu Lingyu had no choice but to give up, but she still felt uneasy about letting her savior go back like that.

Just then, Tianya tugged at Hu Lingyu's sleeve, "Grandma, give the peach shortbread to the pretty sister."

Oh right, how could she forget that?

Hu Lingyu quickly opened her backpack and stuffed the items inside into Yu Yao's basket one by one. "You can't refuse these things anymore, please accept them."

Peach shortbread, canned fruit, fruit candy, and malted milk powder.

These items cost more than ten yuan each, while at that time a city worker's salary was only thirty yuan. These items were almost half a month's salary for a worker.

Despite the generous gift, Yu Yao refused to accept it, saying, "It's too valuable, I really can't accept it."

"Please accept them, comrade. It's so heavy for me to carry all of them back." Hu Lingyu looked at her pitifully, as if she would burst into tears if Yu Yao refused.

Sweetie tugged at Yu Yao's clothes, looking at her with pitiful eyes, and said coquettishly, "Pretty sister, please accept it."

The two, one big and one small, looked pitiful, like two adorable rabbits.

This person is clearly well protected by their family and has no sense of caution towards strangers.

Helpless, Yu Yao picked up the peach shortbread and returned everything else.

"I'll accept the peach shortbread, but I don't need anything else. That's enough."

"All right."

Although Hu Lingyu felt it was a bit stingy to give her savior only half a pound of peach shortbread, she dejectedly took back the other items when she saw that Yu Yao refused to accept them.

Suddenly, something occurred to me, and I perked up again.

“Our benefactor, you’re carrying so much stuff, let us help you carry it and take you there.”

Yu Yao pointed to the oxcart not far away, "That's our brigade's oxcart."

Hu Lingyu looked at the coachman waving to Yu Yao not far away and sighed, "So close..."

"Yu girl, come over here quickly, the oxcart is going back to Baihe." The oxcart driver was a distant cousin of Yu Yao's, and he was calling out to Yu Yao loudly.

"Comrade," Yu Yao said, picking up the things from the basket, "I'm leaving now."

"Goodbye, pretty sister." Sweetie waved.

So cute, another day of tricking her into wanting to have a daughter.

From afar, Yu Yao saw a large group of other people on the oxcart, all there to sell goods at the commune's supply and marketing cooperative. One of them was the same person who had grabbed Zhu Pozi's worn-out shoes by the Baihe River that day.

His nickname seems to be "Big Mouth Liu".

Yu Yao thought for a moment, then went to the roadside and picked a large bunch of weeds. She covered the eggs, peach crisps, and other items with several layers of grass to make sure they were completely covered before stopping and hurrying over.

As it turns out, Yu Yao's approach was remarkably prescient.

As soon as she boarded the oxcart with her basket, the older women all turned their attention to the basket covered with straw.

"Miss Yu, what did you buy? It seems there wasn't a basket before you came." Liu Dazui said, reaching out to brush the straw off the basket.

"I didn't buy anything." Yu Yao blocked her hand, moved the basket to the other side, and found an empty seat.

Liu Dazui pouted and muttered under his breath, "Can't I even look? What's there to be so smug about?"

The other older women looked down on Liu Dazui and smiled as they invited Yu Yao to sit next to them, saying, "Yu Yao, sit here, it's spacious here."

The seat was at the very edge of the oxcart, where your feet could only dangle in the air, but it was quiet. Yu Yao thanked the lady who offered her the seat and sat down.

The oxcarts of the brigade swayed and rattled as they headed toward Baihe Brigade.

On the other side, Hu Lingyu and Tianya watched Yu Yao leave, then turned and headed towards the Dongfeng Guesthouse.

She had only taken a couple of steps when Hu Lingyu suddenly cried out and turned around to look for the oxcart, but it was nowhere to be seen.

Her face was full of regret. "I forgot to ask my savior's name. I don't know if I'll ever have the chance to see him again."

Sweetie held her grandmother's hand, her face showing disappointment.

"I really like this pretty older sister. She's a great hero just like my uncle. And she's beautiful and gentle. I wish she could be my aunt."

Hearing her granddaughter's words, Hu Lingyu's eyes lit up.

Putting everything else aside, this girl is beautiful, generous, and has her own opinions. How come she didn't think of this aspect?
