After leaving the police station, the three did not immediately return to the guesthouse.
They went back to the old tenement building to see if they could find any other clues.
Unfortunately, there are no clues about the tenement building.
Some of those people were transferred or left, leaving only a few behind.
If we could have found out anything, we would have found out back then. After so many years, it's even less likely we'd be able to find it now.
The trail went cold again.
Wu Wanying was somewhat frustrated.
Yu Yao comforted her, "Mom, don't worry. Since the murderer has shown his true colors, we will find him sooner or later."
Wu Huaiqing also said, "My sister is right. It's getting late. Let's go back to the guesthouse first. Aunt, you should eat too, or your stomach will hurt again."
Wu Wanying actually felt quite useless. If she had thought of coming up the mountain to look for her child back then, she might not have been separated from her child for so long.
Seeing the children comforting her like that, she didn't want them to worry, so she nodded.
Unexpectedly, they received a call from Xiao Fu, the police officer, early the next morning.
They said they found some suspicious points while reviewing past case files and wanted to ask them about them.
The three arrived at the police station.
"Officer Fu, have you made any discoveries?"
Officer Xiao Fu took out the case file and said, "Look here."
"Not long after you left the tenement building, one of the aunties from your compound went back to her hometown and casually mentioned to her sister-in-law that her child had been taken away by her maternal grandmother. That day, this auntie happened to be delivering clothing patterns to a garment shop near the textile factory and had seen that woman. This auntie remembered what the woman was wearing at the time."
“We have contacted the island police about this matter. The island police came to your place, and at that time your family said that the child had been found. I'm sorry, although it's a bit rude to say this, but from how you were interacting yesterday, it seemed like the child had only been found recently.”
Last night, when I got home, I talked to my family about this. I was happy for Wu Wanying and Cui Zhizhou, but as we talked, I realized something was wrong.
He returned to the police station that night and reviewed all the case files. He found some suspicious points, which is why he sought confirmation from them.
Twenty years of estrangement cannot be bridged by spending just a few days together, and Yu Yao and Wu Wanying can never have the same level of understanding and relaxed relationship as a mother and daughter living together.
Having served as a police officer for so many years, Fu Gongan is extremely observant and noticed it right away.
It's a fact that Wu Wanying and Yu Yao don't care.
He immediately replied, "It's alright, Xiao Fu, you're right about that. We only reunited this month. We didn't find each other before."
Fu Gong'an frowned. "So, you didn't find the child back then, then the person who told the police that they found the child has a big problem. Regardless of whether she is the murderer or not, she bears responsibility for this."
The police actually came to our door back then?
This fact was unexpected by Wu Wanying. Who was it, and why did they say they had found the child when they hadn't?
Could this person be the murderer who took her child?
Police Officer Fu: "Do you have any suspects among these people?"
"It's hard to judge. Back then, we didn't have family housing. We lived in a large courtyard rented by the shipyard, along with seven or eight other families. Without further evidence, everyone in that courtyard is a suspect."
We probably need to consult the local police to get more information before proceeding.
This means they'll have to return to the island. Fortunately, they've accomplished their main purpose for coming to Qin Province, so going back won't be a problem.
Wu Huaiqing had a procurement mission on this trip, so after discussing it, the three decided to let him stay in Qin Province, while Wu Wanying and Yu Yao returned to the island to confirm.
The two took their luggage directly to the train station, bought tickets for the next available train back to Guangdong Province, and then took a ferry back to the island.
After disembarking from the ship, the two went to the dock where vehicles were parked and found Wu Huaiqing's sidecar motorcycle.
Wu Wanying frowned and asked worriedly, "Yu Yao, should we take the bus? We've waited twenty years, what's a little longer?"
Yu Yao comforted her, "Mom, don't worry, I won't do anything reckless. I'll try it first, and if it doesn't work, we'll take the bus."
It wasn't that she was overconfident, but she had experience riding electric bikes and driving cars before. Unlike bicycles, these three-wheeled motorcycles don't fall over, so riding them shouldn't be too difficult.
Yu Yao pushed her motorcycle to the open space outside the dock, took a deep breath, and gently turned the handlebars.
Just as she expected, it was easier to learn to ride a motorcycle than a bicycle.
After riding around a few times, Yu Yao felt it was okay, so she let Wu Wanying get on and rode directly to the island's police station.
The police officer in charge of this matter back then is on leave and won't be back to work until tomorrow.
Yu Yao had no choice but to take Wu Wanying to the family compound first. "Mom, we're here."
Wu Wanying invited Yu Yao: "Yu Yao, come in and sit down. You've never been to my house before."
"Mom, I won't go today. I'll go back to the island first and see if Lu Ze has any other ideas. Your birthday is coming up soon, and I'll bring Lu Ze back to my parents' home to officially visit you then."
Hearing her mention her family home, Wu Wanying was visibly happy. "Alright, you go back first. Mom will be careful when she gets back and won't give anything away."
After the mother and daughter finished speaking, they looked at each other and smiled.
"Ride your bike slowly on the road."
"Mom, I understand. You should go home and rest early too."
Wu Wanying watched Yu Yao's figure disappear before heading towards the family building. Not long after, she ran into the family compound.
Three or five family members were chatting and gossiping while holding newspapers. When they saw her, they all took out their newspapers and asked her, "Teacher Wu, is the advanced military spouse Yu Yao mentioned in this article your daughter?"
