Second place went to Wang Chuntao's braised beef canned food, which received 43 votes.
After the results for canned meat were announced, another vote was held for canned seafood, canned vegetables, and canned fruit.
Five out of Yu Yao's nine canned food products made it to the second stage: original beef, braised beef, anchovies, braised ribbonfish, and longan.
The second person who passed the most canned food tests was Wang Chuntao, who passed three types of canned food tests: braised beef, anchovy, and pineapple.
Fang Qiaoqiao couldn't wait to have everyone take out their slips of paper so she could see how many they had guessed correctly.
Fang Qiaoqiao spoke first, "Let's start with canned meat. I guessed two right. Ayao, Comrade Wu, Commander Lu, how many did you guess right?"
Wu Huaiqing opened his palm. "I guessed four correctly."
Yu Yao also guessed four correctly. She and Wu Huaiqing both guessed the same one wrong. Fang Qiaoqiao didn't even recognize this one.
The taste test representatives were so deceptive; they acted so convincingly that their acting skills could win an Oscar.
With over a thousand people in the staff auditorium, Yu Yao was certain that very few people had guessed correctly.
Lu Ze remained silent, prompting Yu Yao to ask curiously, "How many did you guess correctly?"
Lu Ze handed her the note in his hand.
Yu Yao opened it, and after seeing the numbers inside, her eyes widened. Then she continued to look at the other categories, and after finishing, she looked at Lu Ze in disbelief.
"Commander Lu, how many did you guess correctly? Why do you look like that?" Fang Qiaoqiao leaned closer and looked at the slip of paper in Yu Yao's hand. After seeing the answers, her expression was even more exaggerated than Yu Yao's, and her voice cracked with excitement, "Commander Lu, you actually guessed twenty correctly?!"
Not five, not ten, the top five from each group, a total of twenty.
They guessed them all correctly!
Fang Qiaoqiao looked at Lu Ze with disbelief. Could a human being do that?
Even Wu Huaiqing couldn't help but show a surprised expression.
He had known Lu Ze for a long time and knew him quite well. He knew that Lu Ze was the most outstanding regimental commander in the island troops and had won the title of "King of Soldiers" three times in a row. He figured that Lu Ze was probably right about most of the time.
But no one expected that Lu Ze would be able to guess twenty correctly.
That must require incredible observation skills.
They were able to meticulously analyze the subtle clues to determine the taste testers' genuine evaluations of the canned food, and finally, based on the actual reactions of each group of taste testers, identify the top five most satisfied taste testers.
It wasn't just one person, it was sixty people.
Not only do you need excellent observation skills, but you also need a good memory, the ability to analyze data, and the ability to judge the final result.
Even Yu Yao, with her amazing sense of smell, only guessed fifteen correctly and made five wrong judgments.
When the people around heard that there were twenty, they all looked over.
"What? I must have misheard. I actually heard someone guess twenty correctly."
Someone nearby asked, puzzled, "What, twenty?"
"What else could it be but twenty? There were four groups in this canned food competition, and the top five from each group were selected. Someone actually guessed the top five from each group by observing the expressions of all the taste test representatives."
The surrounding workers all gathered around, asking Lu Ze questions.
"Comrade PLA soldier, did you really guess every single one correctly?"
Fang Qiaoqiao snapped out of her daze and showed the note in her hand to the people around her. "Look, this is his answer!"
The worker who received the slip of paper looked at each set of numbers written by Lu Ze and compared them one by one with the serial numbers in red on the podium. He became more and more excited as he matched them. "They are correct. Every single one matches. He really guessed them all correctly."
The others passed the note around and exclaimed in admiration.
A female comrade, knowing that the PLA soldier was Yu Yao's husband, casually asked, "Comrade Yu, how many did you guess correctly in total?"
Yu Yao was taken aback by the question and paused for a second before saying somewhat embarrassedly, "I only guessed fifteen correctly, which isn't many."
The number fifteen once again drew everyone's attention.
"My God, is this what they mean by 'comparison is the thief of joy'? Getting fifteen right isn't a lot, but what about someone like me who didn't get a single one right? How am I supposed to live?" someone wailed from the crowd.
"Like attracts like. They're a perfect couple, each one smarter than the last."
"Yes, that's amazing! Comrade Yu Yao has set a record for the most canned goods to reach the finals since the canned food research and development competition began. Comrade PLA has set a record for guessing correctly. Looking at it this way, they really are a match made in heaven!"
Everyone looked at Yu Yao and Lu Ze with envy. The couple was not only good-looking, but also incredibly intelligent. It seemed that outstanding people were surrounded by other outstanding people.
We're all human, but that's the difference.
Soon, news of the finals spread throughout the auditorium and the factory, along with the story of Yu Yao and Lu Ze.
Everyone who heard it praised it.
When it was time to watch the movie in the evening, Yu Yao and Lu Ze walked towards the threshing ground where the movie was being shown. Along the way, people recognized them and greeted them.
Fang Qiaoqiao teased them, "You and Commander Lu are celebrities in our food factory now. Everyone says you two are a perfect couple."
Cultural life was extremely scarce in the 1970s. People had few entertainment options, and watching a movie was a major event for everyone.
The film projectionists were members of the island commune's film projection team. Their daily work consisted of either copying films at the island cinema or showing films at various forest farms, factories, or communes.
When Yu Yao and the others arrived, they saw the film projection team arriving in an empty factory vehicle. Adults and children crowded around, some helping and others cheering.
