“Since this is a confession session, I think it would be more appropriate to have some lychee wine with it.” Yu Yao picked up the wine bottle on the table and asked Lu Ze, “Would you like a glass?”
Lu Ze nodded. "I'll do it."
Yu Yao did not refuse. Seeing that Lu Ze had poured two glasses, she picked up her enamel mug, took a sip, and slowly said:
"The reason I know about Pansha Island and that Song Yiming is not because I am a spy or an enemy agent, but because of a novel."
Lu Ze frowned slightly. "A novel?"
“That’s right, it’s a novel.” Yu Yao looked at him, took a sip of lychee wine, and looked at the newspaper on the wall, as if she could see her past self living in the 21st century through the void.
It felt both strange and familiar, a mix of emotions.
"To be precise, it's a novel set in the 1970s. You and Song Yiming are characters in the novel, each with your own destiny."
Lu Ze's voice was calm: "So you know Song Yiming isn't dead because of what's in the book?"
“That’s right,” Yu Yao looked at him with a hint of self-deprecation on her face. “Is it hard to believe? I can understand if you don’t believe it. After all, I wouldn’t believe it either if I hadn’t transmigrated into the book.”
Lu Ze's expression remained calm as always. "What do you mean by 'transmigrating into a book'? You... aren't a character in the book?"
No wonder he's the future bigwig in the novel; he's incredibly perceptive.
“I am not a character in the book. I am a person living more than 50 years in the future, in 2024. I died suddenly due to an accident and woke up as a character in the book. The content of this novel was automatically in my mind.”
“Ayao, since you know that Song Yiming is not dead, why was your first reaction wrong when I first mentioned Song Yiming’s sacrifice?”
"Because I only knew that you would have two right-hand men by your side in the future, and one of them wasn't given a full name in the book, only that he was called Song Gou Dan. It took me a while to remember that there was such a person. Hearing your confirmation, I realized that Song Gou Dan in the book is actually Song Yiming..."
Lu Ze had considered that Yu Yao might give many reasons, but he had never thought of this one.
"Yu Yao, this answer is beyond my comprehension. Let me think about it."
After they became a couple, this was the first time Lu Ze had called her by her full name, and he did so very solemnly and seriously.
Yu Yao knew he needed some time to process and digest the information, so she nodded and said okay.
“Lu Ze, I know this is hard for people to believe. If I hadn’t experienced it myself, I wouldn’t believe it either. I understand if you don’t believe it.”
Although she would be disappointed.
"Ah Yao, give me some time."
Lu Ze glanced at his watch. "It's getting late. I'll take you to work."
Yu Yao instinctively refused, "You forgot, the serial killer has been caught, the island is very safe recently, I can go by myself."
Although she understood Lu Ze's suspicions, she still felt somewhat uncomfortable because of his distrust.
She can't accept it emotionally, and she needs some time to process and deal with it.
She needs more time to think about what she should do if Lu Ze still finds her identity suspicious.
"I have a meeting this morning, so I'm leaving now." Yu Yao pushed her bicycle out of the courtyard gate.
Lu Ze stood in the courtyard, watching her departing figure, a hint of reluctance flashing in his eyes: "Ayao, it's not that I don't trust you, but I have no choice but to do this."
At the very beginning of the island's establishment, the spouse of a high-ranking leader was turned by foreign reactionary forces, which not only caused huge losses to the island's troops but also resulted in serious casualties.
This is not an isolated case.
Two years ago, a battalion commander's childhood sweetheart came to join the army. It turned out to be a foreign spy in disguise. The battalion commander discovered the suspicious points but concealed them due to personal reasons, which ultimately brought huge consequences to the organization.
With the lessons of the past right before his eyes, how could he not be cautious?
Lu Ze is not afraid of being deceived or hurt, but he cannot risk the army or the organization.
The word "loyalty" was deeply etched into his mind from the very first day he put on his uniform. From that moment on, he was not just himself, but a member of the organization.
As a regimental-level officer, Lu Ze had the authority to investigate the files of military personnel and their families. He wanted to take another look at the political vetting documents from that time.
Upon arriving at the archives, Lu Ze said to the comrade in charge, "Please retrieve all of Comrade Yu Yao's files for me."
"Commander Lu, please sit here and register."
Not long after, the staff in the archives took out a file bag and handed it to Lu Ze, who then left.
After he left, Commander Zheng came out of another office, picked up the registration form on the table, and his gaze fell on the reason in the last line.
With Commander Zheng's sharp eye, he naturally saw through the concealment and exaggeration, and his brows furrowed deeply.
Once you're in this position, it's hard for anything to escape his notice.
Especially since Lu Ze was someone he had watched grow up and promoted himself. It could be said that even Old Master Lu and Hu Lingyu didn't understand Lu Ze as well as Commander Zheng.
He would never look at Yu Yao's file without a reason.
Back in his office, Commander Zheng dialed a special number and instructed the person on the other end: "I need detailed information on Lu Ze and Yu Yao during this period, including who they've been in contact with, what happened, and whether there were any unusual occurrences. No detail is too small."
Before hanging up, he added, almost as if possessed, "Also, reinvestigate Yu Yao's past; I need more detailed information."
After hanging up the phone, Commander Zheng sat in his leather chair, took out a cigarette from his drawer, and lit it.
The stars shone brightly or dimly, shrouded in smoke.
