Yu Yao was stunned, somewhat incredulous, and tentatively asked, "Lu Ze, is that you?"
Lu Ze reached out and stroked her face, whispering, "It's me, A Yao, I'm back."
Confirming that Lu Ze had returned, Yu Yao's nose and eyes suddenly stung with tears. She placed her small fist on Lu Ze's chest, and her voice trembled as she spoke:
"Why did it take you so long to come back? Do you know how long the baby and I waited for you? Do you know how worried we were about you? Waaaaah..."
In the end, Yu Yao burst into tears.
Lu Ze looked at her belly, feeling tenderness as he pulled his lover into his arms and kissed her forehead repeatedly. "I'm sorry for making you and the baby worry."
Yu Yao leaned against him and cried incessantly, her tears falling onto Lu Ze's chest, burning his heart.
His steely will crumbled at this moment in the face of his lover's tearful complaints.
Yu Yao cried for a while, then suddenly cried out, "It hurts!"
Lu Ze turned on the light and his pupils dilated when he saw Yu Yao's protruding belly.
Then, drawn by Yu Yao's groans, he helped her sit on the edge of the bed and asked anxiously, "What's wrong? Where does it hurt?"
Yu Yao frowned. "It's my leg. I just got a cramp in my calf."
"Lie down, I'll give you a massage."
Lu Ze skillfully helped Yu Yao lie down, his large hands kneading her calves to relieve her pain. "Are you feeling better?"
Yu Yao nodded. "Much better."
Lu Ze breathed a sigh of relief and continued the massage.
Looking at his wife's haggard face and legs that had become swollen from edema, Commander Lu, who appeared calm even in the face of a collapsing mountain, secretly had tears welling up in his eyes.
It's heartache, gratitude, and above all, cherishing it.
Lu Ze massaged her legs for a while, and Yu Yao felt much better. "Lu Ze, that's enough, you don't need to massage anymore. You must be exhausted from rushing back, come up and lie down for a while."
Lu Ze stood up. "I'm in a hurry to get going and haven't washed up yet. You go to sleep first, I'll go wash up."
Looking at the stubble on his chin and his bloodshot eyes, Yu Yao couldn't bear to make him go to wash up again. She took his hand and said, "It's okay, the baby and I don't mind."
Lu Ze knew she was a clean person and that she was worried about him, so he said, "It's okay, I'll just take a quick shower and be right back."
He was covered in sweat and dust, as well as the blood of his enemies; he was filthy and didn't want his loved ones and baby to be affected.
Seeing his insistence, Yu Yao nodded, "Then come over quickly."
"Um."
Lu Ze grabbed a change of clothes, went to the bathroom, quickly took a shower, dried his hair, and went into the house wearing his military trousers.
As soon as he lay down, Yu Yao snuggled into his arms, resting her head on his shoulder and placing one hand on his chest.
The familiar scent of soap filled her nostrils, the comforting sound of his heartbeat reached her ears, and she felt the warmth of his body beneath her palms. Only then did she feel the reassurance that Lu Ze had truly returned.
Yu Yao asked him, "Lu Ze, it's so late, why didn't you stay another day before coming back?"
Lu Ze looked at her tenderly, "I missed you and the baby so much. Luckily, there was a ferry back to the island in the early morning, so I took the ferry back."
He held her close, his gaze lingering on her prominent belly, and said, "How come your belly is so big? Have you seen Dr. Cai?"
Yu Yao glanced at her stomach and then remembered that Lu Ze didn't know she was carrying twins.
She took his hand and placed it on her belly, smiling as she said, "This is Daddy. Daddy's back. Big Treasure and Little Treasure, come and say hello to Daddy."
Lu Ze seemed to have suddenly gone mad, completely stunned. After a long while, he stiffly turned his neck and asked his lover.
"You just said... Da Bao and Xiao Bao?"
Seeing his expression, Yu Yao smiled gently. "Yes, Da Bao and Xiao Bao. Dr. Cai said I'm having twins, two babies."
"Twins? Two babies?"
Lu Ze repeated her words as if possessed by a machine.
Yu Yao nodded. "The doctor said that the other baby was quite naughty and hid, so they didn't find him. Were you surprised and happy?"
"Happy, happy," Lu Ze replied calmly.
Yu Yao was dissatisfied and looked up at him, "You don't look happy at all? Don't you love me and the baby anymore?"
Lu Ze chuckled, kissed her forehead, nose, and finally her lips. "Silly girl, how could I not love you and the baby? I'm just so happy that I'm momentarily stunned."
"That's more like it." Yu Yao smiled with satisfaction.
Looking at her astonishing belly, Lu Ze was happy, but a faint sense of anxiety and worry lingered in his eyes.
Yu Yao had a lot to share with Lu Ze, and many questions to ask him.
The bedroom was cozy and peaceful in the quiet night.
Yu Yao wanted to ask Lu Ze how the mission went, but after she asked, no one responded for a long time.
Looking up, I realized that Lu Ze had closed his eyes and fallen asleep.
Yu Yao gave a gentle smile and stared at Lu Ze without moving.
Her playful fingers traced his forehead, across his high, prominent nose, and finally down to his chapped lips and stubble-covered chin.
He had to travel in the early hours of the morning after finishing his mission so he could get back to see her and the baby as soon as possible. He must be exhausted.
Yu Yao yawned and glanced at her watch.
It's 3 a.m. now, and there are still three hours until the reveille. I can still sleep for a while.
Yu Yao turned off the light, took a blanket and covered herself and Lu Ze's chest and stomach, rubbed against his chest, and closed her eyes to sleep.
The next day, the familiar song "The East Is Red, the Sun Rises" played on the radio. Yu Yao slowly woke up and subconsciously touched the spot next to her.
