The room was so quiet that only the two of them could be heard breathing.
Lu Ze was backlit, so his expression was obscured, but Yu Yao could still feel his gaze.
He was looking at her.
This realization made Yu Yao's heart skip a beat, and she quickly turned over.
The bed creaked again.
Yu Yao froze.
Isn't this bed too flimsy? She didn't move much, so why is it making creaking noises?
If someone who didn't know the situation heard them, they would have thought they were doing something else entirely.
How embarrassing.
After a while, Yu Yao found it uncomfortable to sleep in one position.
She looked back at Lu Ze's position.
Seeing that he wasn't moving, she assumed he was asleep and turned over again.
Squeak.
Yu Yao closed her eyes, then opened them again a moment later, staring blankly at the ceiling.
I've been busy all day, so why can't I fall asleep?
I tossed and turned, and the bed creaked and groaned.
"If you're not comfortable with it, I'll sleep on the chair."
Lu Ze's voice rang out from the darkness, startling Yu Yao.
Yu Yao felt awkward, thinking he had fallen asleep. "It's okay, I just have trouble sleeping in a new bed, it has nothing to do with you."
After saying that, I closed my eyes and silently sorted out what I needed to do next. Instead, sleepiness gradually overcame me, and I fell asleep quickly.
Grandpa Lu and Hu Lingyu took Tianya to bed early.
After putting the little girl to sleep, Hu Lingyu couldn't help but ask Lu Huiyun, who was reading the newspaper.
"Do you think things will go smoothly for them tonight?" It's a shame she specifically chose to stay next to them, to avoid awkwardness if a stranger stayed there.
They're an old couple, and Lu Huiyun still doesn't know Hu Lingyu. "You're just worrying unnecessarily. They've only known each other for a short time. You may not know, but don't you know how slow your own son is to warm up to people? You have to give the young couple time to develop their relationship."
"What do you know? The best way for a man and woman to cultivate feelings is to fight in bed and make up before they fall asleep. If you keep dragging things out like you did back then, it'll be too late."
Hu Lingyu snorted.
Lu Huiyun's face darkened: "Why was I so hesitant back then?"
Hu Lingyu was about to say something when she heard a creaking sound coming from next door.
She nudged Lu Huiyun: "Did you hear anything?"
"What's that sound?" Lu Huiyun didn't hear it and continued reading the newspaper.
"It seems like it's gone again."
Just as he finished speaking, another creaking sound came.
This time, Hu Lingyu finally realized that the sound was coming from the bed as someone moved around on it.
She smiled brightly, it seemed things were going well between them, so she was relieved.
The creaking sound was intermittent and lasted for less than ten minutes before it stopped.
That's all?
Hu Lingyu couldn't believe it. She got up, leaned against the wall, and held her breath to listen carefully.
Lu Huiyun asked her helplessly, "What are you doing? How can you eavesdrop on your son and daughter-in-law like this?"
"You don't care about either of them at all!"
Hu Lingyu lowered her voice, "Do you know how long the bed creaked just now? It only lasted ten minutes."
Lu Huiyun frowned. "Maybe it's because this guesthouse is soundproof. You'd better come back quickly. What kind of behavior is this?"
Hu Lingyu sighed and walked back.
"If only it were truly soundproof. Is it because my son is too old? He's only just turning thirty, how come he can't do it already?"
Twenty-seven, that's seven years older than Yu Yatou.
The next morning.
Yu Yao woke up feeling refreshed. She had thought she would have insomnia all night, but unexpectedly, she fell asleep.
Perhaps because she went to bed early, she was exceptionally energetic in the morning.
Just then, the door opened, and Hu Lingyu's voice rang out: "Yu girl, Lu Ze, are you awake? Breakfast in the cafeteria is ready, let's go eat together."
"Mom, I'm here." Yu Yao braided her beautiful hair into a plait and went out the door.
Hu Lingyu peeked inside but didn't see Lu Ze. "Where did Lu Ze go?"
Yu Yao had no suspicions. "He went out to exercise."
Lu Ze went out for a run early this morning.
Hu Lingyu secretly observed that Yu Yatou was in such good spirits that she didn't seem to have slept well last night.
Why.
"Mom? What's wrong? Why do you look so worried? Did something happen?"
“Mom’s fine. Um,” Hu Lingyu hesitated for a moment, but still held Yu Yao’s hand, “Yu Yao, Mom has something to ask you.”
"What is it, Mom? Just ask."
Hu Lingyu asked in a low voice, "You... um, what time did you go to sleep yesterday?"
Yu Yao recalled, "I think I went to sleep before nine o'clock."
Hu Lingyu's heart skipped a beat.
Sure enough, ten minutes passed, the timing was perfect.
The two went downstairs and ran into Lu Ze, who was returning from his exercise.
Hu Lingyu looked at her son's physique and couldn't understand it.
Despite his muscular physique and daily drills and troop leadership, he's all show and no substance—all bark and no bite!
No, she had to think of something. She remembered that her old friend had some folk remedies.
After breakfast, Yu Yao and Lu Ze had to go back to Baihe Brigade. Their train back to Guangdong Province was early the next morning.
Before leaving, the captain needs to issue a new letter of introduction and certificate.
When she arrived at the brigade office, the people there were having a meeting. They greeted Yu Yao warmly and told her to come back and visit often when she had time.
After giving instructions for today's work, the captain called Yu Yao and Lu Ze to his office.
It involves transferring household registration, which requires quite a few documents. In addition to the brigade, you also need to go to the public security bureau.
In the early 1970s, the state had very strict household registration management, and there were huge differences between rural and urban household registration.
In rural areas, food depends entirely on the weather. After the grain tax is paid, the remaining amount distributed to each household depends on the harvest from the land that year.
