As if sensing her confusion, Xiao Hong took the initiative to explain:
"Although many foreign books are now banned, confiscated, and treated as poisonous weeds, this only applies to foreign literature. Technical books from our Big Brother are still acceptable to read. These are also reference materials used by domestic food factories today, so there's no need to worry about them being investigated."
"However, to avoid misunderstandings from others, you can just read it at home and don't take it out. If you don't know Russian, just ask Lu Ze; he speaks Russian very well."
Yu Yao nodded to express her gratitude, "Thank you, sister-in-law. You've worked so hard. These books are very helpful to me."
Industrial technology started late in those days, and there weren't many complete sets of related technical books printed. It was already quite remarkable that so many books could be found in such a short time.
Xiao Hong waved her hand, "We're family, no need for formalities. As long as it's useful, that's fine. It's getting late, I have to go to work tomorrow, you should go to bed early too."
After saying that, Xiao Hong walked towards her room, but after taking only two steps, she turned back.
"I almost forgot, Mom asked me to tell you that you don't need to rush to get up tomorrow morning. You've had a long journey today, so sleep in a little longer. You can go to the department store after you've woken up."
"Okay, sister-in-law, I understand. Take care, sister-in-law."
After taking a shower, Yu Yao lay on Lu Ze's bed, the blanket covering her chest and stomach.
My thoughts inevitably drifted to Lu Ze.
When Lu Ze went out that evening, she inadvertently caught a glimpse of Song Yiming.
She was shocked by the blood on Song Yiming's body, but she didn't say anything for fear of alarming her parents and making them worry.
It's understandable to feel a little worried when you're alone right now.
I wonder how things are going with Lu Ze? Has the matter been resolved?
Although Lu Zeping lived a peaceful and uneventful life in the book, she had already transmigrated into the book, and she was unsure whether the future would change.
Never mind, I'm going to sleep now.
She turned over and closed her eyes.
Perhaps it was the change of environment, but she was having trouble sleeping in the same bed and couldn't fall asleep even after lying in bed for half an hour.
She simply turned on the light and started reading a book on canning technology.
Sure enough, I felt sleepy after watching for a short while.
Yu Yao yawned, put the book on the bedside table, turned off the light, and went to sleep.
The next day, it was broad daylight.
Yu Yao got up full of energy and went with Hu Lingyu to another house in the compound, which was the house that the organization had allocated to Uncle Yue.
Yesterday, Yue Shan went out to see an old friend and didn't come over for the family reunion dinner. Today, since she was at home, Hu Lingyu brought her over.
"Uncle Yue, Lu Ze said you like to drink, so I just bought some at the department store. I don't know if it suits your taste." Yu Yao handed the gift to Yue Shan.
Yue Shan took it and looked at it, then smiled and said, "Guizhou Moutai, good wine indeed. This must have been chosen by Lu Ze. That kid really knows me best; he knew I was craving good wine from my hometown and immediately sent it to me. Madam Chief, Yu Yao, come in quickly. There are a lot of things in the house, don't bump into anything."
When Yu Yao went inside, she saw that the room was filled with logs of all sizes.
Besides rosewood, there are many other types of wood that Yu Yao doesn't recognize.
Yue Shan asked her, "Have you decided what kind of furniture you want to have made?"
Yu Yao nodded and took out her drawings. "I need a bed, a wardrobe, two dressers, two rocking chairs, and a desk. I have drawings of what they should look like."
"Let me take a look." Yue Shan took the blueprints, looked at them, and thought they were fine. "It's not something difficult to make. Once it's finished, I'll have someone send it to you."
Yu Yao was very happy. "Then thank you, Uncle Yue."
The two were going to the state-run department store, so they said goodbye to Yue Shan and left.
This time, Hu Lingyu took her to a department store on Zhongshan Fifth Road, which was much larger than the one they had visited last time.
The tall building is entirely comprised of various sales areas, spanning two full floors.
Upon entering the department store, Hu Lingyu led her straight to the shirt counter and fabric section, where she quickly bought a whole bunch of fabrics, pointing at the dazzling array on the shelves.
"Give me five feet of this blue twill fabric and five feet of that white floral print fabric, seven feet of this light red fabric, and one of those Dacron floral shirts and one of those pale yellow dresses."
Seeing that she was still looking, Yu Yao quickly stopped her, saying, "Mom, that's enough."
Hu Lingyu thought she was worried about not having enough cloth coupons, so she patted her hand and said, "Don't worry, Mom brought a lot of coupons. Your sister-in-law gave me some before she went to work so I could buy things for you. You don't need to worry about not having enough."
"Mom, you forgot? We haven't even used the fabric we bought last time. If we buy more, I won't be able to carry it all."
Hu Lingyu wasn't worried at all. "It's okay, the post office is right across from the department store. We can buy things and send them back to the island."
As she spoke, she pointed to a white and a green dress, both of which she thought would look good on Yu Yao.
After much persuasion from Yu Yao, Hu Lingyu finally stopped buying fabric and clothes, and then moved on to other counters.
Hu Lingyu was buying things in the department store with great enthusiasm, just like a domineering CEO in a novel who buys things for the female lead. Except this one isn't a domineering CEO, but a domineering mother-in-law.
Yu Yao followed behind her, feeling as if Hu Lingyu might turn around at any moment and throw out a black card for her to swipe at will.
I bought a lot of canned snacks, especially in the non-staple food section.
"These are all foods produced by Haixing Food Factory. Some are exported overseas to earn foreign exchange, and the rest are sold in department stores. Try them all later; they'll help you with your job application."
Yu Yao looked at the canned food and made notes on each one.
When she came out of the department store, she was carrying so many bags that she could barely carry them all.
