Chapter 9: Unable to Kill the One I Love (2)

The Chen family discussed it and invited matchmaker Grandma Chen to propose marriage early the next morning.

Granny Chen was Chen Wei's great-aunt. She had mentioned two girlfriends to him, but Chen Wei rejected them after meeting them once. Now that she heard that he had a girlfriend, her eyes lit up: "Whose girl is she? She must be very pretty."

She didn't know Chen Wei yet. This guy only loves beautiful girls. Several matchmakers nearby failed to find him a partner, so he must be looking for an outstanding girl.

Chen Wei thought of Xiang Meimei's pretty face and that he would be able to marry her today, and he started to smile foolishly again.

Aunt Chen didn't even bother to talk about him. She turned his face away and said, "Aunt, it's Xiang Hongqi's second daughter from the steel factory. Her name is Xiang Meimei."

The matchmaker has many connections, and Granny Chen figured it out as soon as she thought about it: "Oh, her father is a level six worker. Our Dawei has good taste and picked such a good one. Not bad, not bad.

Speaking of his six children, it's the same with you, but Xiang Meimei doesn't have a job. Are you willing to let Dawei suffer..."

Mother Chen sighed: "Aunt, he has been admitted to the propaganda department of the steel plant and is now a formal employee."

Everyone could hear the sadness in her tone.

As a mother-in-law, who doesn't want to dominate her daughter-in-law? She just wanted to let her son see more, but this time, she can't dominate him at all.

Granny Chen has been a matchmaker for so many years, but it's rare for such a comeback. She patted Chen Ma soothingly and said, "Niece-in-law, what's the fuss about this... By the way, how much is your betrothal gift? The regular workers here are not less than 250."

"We know the market price. You told us when our eldest daughter got married. Aunt, I've prepared this amount." Aunt Chen gestured to four with her hand, her eyes shining. "You can't say it's too little, right?"

Four hundred, that's quite a lot.

But marrying high definitely comes at a price, and Granny Chen is used to it: "Then what about the old rules? Is the red envelope 6 yuan or 2 yuan?"

If the two people have never met, and need a matchmaker to mediate them multiple times, it will be more expensive, 6 yuan, which is the matchmaker's hard work fee.

If two people have already fallen in love with each other, the matchmaker only needs to come to their house to show his appreciation, which is a couple of dollars to share in the good luck.

Mother Chen guessed that her silly son had been dating someone for a few months and was still urging her to come home, so he must be interested. However, she was afraid that the girl's family would object, so she had to say:

"It should be 2 yuan. Come first. If it doesn't work out, I'll give you 6 yuan and then we can make peace."

Granny Chen probably understood, and stood up and stretched. "Okay, I'll go to Xiang's house. You two wait for my notification. If I send a message, don't go empty-handed for dinner tonight."

Her words were ambiguous, but what she actually meant was that if she succeeded, she should remember to bring the betrothal gift.

Aunt Chen nodded repeatedly, she was already prepared.

Inspired by the red envelope, Grandma Chen walked as fast as the young people and arrived downstairs of Xiang's house in an hour.

No matter how good her memory was, she couldn't possibly know which building and floor Xiang Hongqi lived on. She grabbed a little kid and asked him. They were all in the same yard, so everyone more or less knew where to live. The kid pointed her in a direction.

I asked another woman and got the following reply:

"Hey, are you looking for Xiang Hongqi's house? What a coincidence. Come on, he lives upstairs from me. I'll take you there."

The tube-shaped building had four floors in total. Granny Chen was led to the west room at the end of the top floor. The woman warmly ushered her in and greeted Zhang Ji, who was sitting inside pasting matchboxes. The first thing she said was, "This person from the Hongqi family said he wanted to see you."

After all, Grandma Chen didn't want her nephew to be rejected and ridiculed when proposing marriage, so she said safely that she wanted to buy a defective kitchen knife from the steel factory and would buy it at a low price without a ticket.

Seeing that the two men were really trying to negotiate the price of the kitchen knife, the woman leading the way finally lost her excitement of watching the fun, grabbed a handful of melon seeds that Zhang Jidi stuffed into her, and went downstairs.

After everyone left, Granny Chen finally smiled: "To be honest, I'm from the Chen family at the match factory. Chen Wei asked me to propose marriage to your second daughter, Xiang Meimei."

My daughter went to the movies last night. Zhang Jidi was not blind, so of course he knew that she was with a gay man. When he turned around, he saw that his daughter had buried her face in her chest, and he felt a headache.

"You guys are just hanging around here, stop causing trouble for me," Zhang Jidi thought to himself. "Girls can't stay home when they grow up." He turned to Granny Chen and said, "Children can't bear to hear this. Let's go in and talk."

The two entered the master bedroom, and Grandma Chen took the initiative: "My nephew said that your daughter is capable and outstanding, and his family will offer this amount of betrothal gifts."

She held up four fingers, with her thumb tucked into her palm.

Zhang Jidi's eyelids twitched. This was really not a small amount of money. Four hundred yuan was enough to buy a temporary worker. Her third son Xiang Lidang was almost 14 years old and was about to graduate from junior high school (primary school is five years long, and junior high school is two years long). If he couldn't find a job at the age of 16, he would have to go to the countryside!

Xiang Lidang has always been a pushover, with his children's ranking and academic performance being top-notch, but he has difficulty finding a job.

If I buy him a job, and my other children are also of marriageable age, will my brothers and sisters just ignore them?

Although it is impossible to get all the money, it is easy to take one third of it.

Zhang Jidi's mind raced, but he sighed, "Meimei is still young, we want to keep her for a few years."

I just found a job and got married without paying a penny to my family. This would set a bad example for my two younger sisters.

"Yes, she's a little young. She's already fifteen, sixteen in lunar age, and seventeen next year. But getting engaged and married will take at least a year. Girls' blooming period is short, and they'll be over twenty in no time. We can't afford to miss out on a good son-in-law."

I don't ask you to get married now. You can settle down first and get married in a year or two. How can you pick the ready-made peaches in your house?

Zhang Jidi was not happy to hear this: "A daughter is sought after by hundreds of families. She has a good foundation. When she goes to the Propaganda Department, I will just wait for her to drink tea with my brother-in-law."

Xiang Meimei had never met a good man, but when she went to the Propaganda Department, many of her colleagues introduced her to good men.

"How can it be the same? Life is just a partnership without love, but only with love can life be sweet and prosperous."

The young couple has agreed, and you as the mother-in-law cannot interfere.

After the confrontation between the two sides, the woman finally gained the upper hand.

After all, when it comes to marriage proposal, the matchmaker cannot make a final decision. It would really offend people. It is much easier for Zhang Jidi to find a man for Xiang Meimei. It is the parents' order and the matchmaker's words. There is nothing the mother can do if she doesn't agree.
