0084 Star-Snatching (2)
Although I was the first to see her, I wasn't the first to get to her. In any case, we were separated by a playground, and in the crowd, someone pushed someone else, shoving me into the gap by the fence.
A sharp pain suddenly shot through my right leg as I moved. I felt a surge of irritation looking at the crowded people in front of me, so I pushed everyone aside and saw the girl lying quietly on the track.
A sharp pain shot through my heart, and her pale face made me think of her as a wounded cat.
I picked her up and ran all the way to the school clinic; she was so pitifully light.
It wasn't until I placed her on the hospital bed in the infirmary that I saw my hands covered in bright red blood, and I panicked for a moment.
The doctor in the school clinic drew the white curtain and told me to wait outside. I saw her take alcohol and a tray inside, and I really wanted to ask her how she was doing.
I still find it funny when I think back on that scene. We were both so naive back then, and I treated her fainting as a life-or-death situation.
Years later, when I was lying in a hospital bed, I found myself completely at peace. But by then, everything had changed, and neither had the people.
About five minutes later, the female doctor pulled back the curtain and asked me, who was in a great hurry, if I had any money with me.
This question really stumped me. I checked my pockets; I had just come from the race, so naturally I didn't have any money with me.
I saw her lying quietly on the bed behind the doctor, and I regretted not being more careful and always keeping some money on hand for emergencies.
The doctor chuckled at my embarrassed look and took out some change from her drawer, handing it to me: "Go to the supermarket next door and buy a pack of sanitary napkins."
I stood there stunned, the doctor's words sounding like alien language.
Her bloodstains still remained on my arms and palms, though they had dried.
So that was...
"Sanitary napkins, you know what they are, right?"
Seeing my dazed expression, the doctor asked me again.
The knowledge from my physiology class flooded my mind in a jumbled mess at that moment. I blushed, nodded, and then shook my head.
I felt extremely embarrassed, especially when the doctor looked at me with that strange, somewhat reproachful gaze.
I think she mistook me for an incompetent "boyfriend" of the girl in bed. In fact, she did mutter something to me under her breath, which made my already flushed face turn even redder.
She placed what she was carrying on my arm and told me that there was brown sugar water and ginger in the second drawer of the cupboard, and asked me to boil some water to make some.
I first rinsed off the bloodstains covering my arms, leaving marks from my fingertips rubbing them. So I washed for a long time, but the area was still red, only now it had turned into fresh blood under my skin.
I secretly glanced back at the girl still lying in the hospital bed and heard my own heart pounding like a drum.
The doctor returned quickly, bringing with him a neatly square pink cotton towel.
She handed me the things, and in my haste, I forgot to even say thank you.
Fortunately, because it was the sports meet, students kept coming into the school hospital, and the doctors were too busy to pay much attention to me.
When I looked back, I saw her dazed after waking up, her adorable appearance exactly the same as a year ago.
I felt as if I had fallen into some kind of boundless sea.
Her name was on the dark green school badge.
He Lingling.
"Huh?" She raised her little head.
"Does it still hurt?"
Those bright, beautiful eyes blinked in front of me, but the words that came out of her mouth made me furious.
"Hey, tell me quickly, is the game over yet?"
I was absolutely frantic; she was actually concerned about that lousy sports meet.
I angrily shoved the ginger tea I had just brewed into her hand, and only after turning away did I dare to let out a soft sigh of relief that I had been holding back for so long.
My palms felt slightly sticky, and I heard someone calling my name.
I desperately wanted the voice to be louder, because at that moment, I so wished she would know my name too.
