Hearing the commotion, Mu Run got off the couch, wearing a white bathrobe. Seeing Lan Zhi lying in a pool of blood, she exclaimed in surprise, "Lan Zhi?"
Fu Yunchen said, "She said she's Wei Yingzhuo's person, what do you think?"
Mu Run frowned and thought for a moment, then walked up to Lan Zhi, pulled open her clothes, revealing a bluish-purple Gu mark. "No wonder she didn't want a physical exam. It seems that the Northern Jin Dynasty doesn't use the Heart-Eating Gu much anymore. Firstly, they don't have any Gu seeds; almost all of them were taken away when the Central Jin Dynasty split up. Secondly, the cost is too high; losing just one mother Gu can kill all the offspring Gu controlled by that mother Gu. Therefore, I'm more inclined to believe she's from the Central Jin Dynasty."
Fu Yunchen looked at the soup that Lan Zhi had thrown on the ground. Although he hadn't tasted any poison, he still felt that something was wrong.
"What, is the water poisonous?"
"There was no poison. The problem is, if there was no poison, why did she have an abnormal reaction after I took a sip, and why did she immediately choose to commit suicide after I spoke?"
Mu Run picked up a shard of porcelain with a little soup still on it and said to Fu Yunchen, "Should we have someone check it?"
"Give it to me." Fu Yunchen took the shard of porcelain, then looked at Mu Run's weary face. "Go back to the main hall and rest with the children. I'll clean up here."
"How can I sleep?" Mu Run looked at Lan Zhi lying on the ground. "She's Zhao Niangzi's niece. Should we investigate Zhao Niangzi?"
"I'll send someone to investigate. If you can't sleep, just lie down." Fu Yunchen habitually raised his hand to pat her head and say "good girl" again, but he subconsciously withdrew his hand just before it touched her.
He looked at his hands, a hint of doubt flashing in his eyes.
Mu Run's attention was still on Lan Zhi's corpse, so he didn't pay attention to Fu Yunchen's changes in movement.
...
Hongmi and Sister Cai soon found out about Lanzhi's situation.
They rushed to the main hall, met with Mu Run, and apologized to him.
"There are no thieves who can be thieves for a thousand days, only thieves who can guard against thieves for a thousand days. Consider this a reminder to everyone. The people in the village must be carefully investigated before they can serve the king."
"Yes, this servant will certainly remember." Madam Cai looked ashamed.
"Sister-in-law, what did she do?" Hongmi asked.
"He was just pretending to be a servant, serving tea and water; he didn't do anything else. Besides, the remaining water has been tested and found to be non-toxic and harmless." Mu Run was also puzzled.
"If it was just overstepping her bounds by serving tea, she could simply be kicked out of the palace. Why did she react so strongly?" Hongmi thought for a moment. "I should go and check on her body."
"Yes, follow your intuition."
Redmi has been released.
Lady Cai said, "Your Highness, should we send Lady Zhao to the palace to ask her some questions?"
Mu Run replied, "No need, the King should investigate. But I'll trouble you to personally examine the remaining palace maids, especially their chests, for any Gu marks. By the way, there's something that can cover up marks—a human skin mask. Hongmi is more familiar with these, so you two can check them together."
“Yes,” Cai replied.
“Sister-in-law.” Hongmi returned, with Yang Yang behind her. “Sister-in-law, Yang Yang has something urgent to report, but the King is not in the palace.”
"What is it?" Mu Run asked.
Yang Yang bowed first, and then, seeing that Mu Run was safe and sound, he breathed a slight sigh of relief. "Brother Zhong Jiu has returned from the Zhongjin Imperial Palace."
Mu Run's heart skipped a beat, and she had a gut feeling that there might be some progress in Lan Zhi's matter.
