Fu Yunchen's expression became slightly unnatural for a moment when Mu Run looked at him.
“Of course,” Mu Run replied.
Fu Yunchen responded softly, then took her hand and continued walking forward.
Mu Run added, "She is a part of me, but I am not her!"
Fu Yunchen held her hand, and it trembled slightly.
Mu Run pulled her hand away from his, "I'm a little tired."
"I'll take you back to rest," Fu Yunchen said.
Mu Run nodded. "Mm."
After sending Mu Run back, Fu Yunchen went to the front court to handle state affairs.
Mu Run, however, did not rest. Instead, she took Hongmi for a walk in the Imperial Garden. She asked her what had happened during the time Hongmi was unconscious.
Although she didn't specifically ask Fu Yunchen, Hongmi still emphasized things about him. Especially the fact that every year on the night of the Ghost Festival, she would open the Bridge of Fate to search for her soul.
Each trip lasted seven days, and upon returning, I was completely emaciated and extremely weak. I only recovered somewhat on the last two trips.
Hongmi was puzzled. She had only been in bed for seven days, her soul seemingly leaving her body, yet it felt like she had endured some immense ordeal. Fu Yunchen had also once gone seven days without food or water, and aside from a slightly pale complexion, his body had hardly changed.
Ziwu then told Hongmi that crossing the Bridge of Fate was not so easy. The reason it was chosen to be the Ghost Festival on the 15th of the seventh lunar month was because the gates of the underworld opened on that day, allowing both the dead and the living to enter. Furthermore, when crossing the Bridge of Fate, one would be blocked by the karmic obstacles created by those one had killed.
Only by passing all the trials of destiny can one possibly find the direction indicated by the thread of fate. By then, the soul is often very weak, and it requires immense willpower to persevere.
However, each time, the only time I face a very tough test is when I go there; the return trip is usually smooth with almost no obstacles.
Mu Run recalled the events that Feng Que's soul had encountered on its journey back with Fu Yunchen. It wasn't without its obstacles… Fu Yunchen protected Feng Que's soul through hellish volcanoes, icy rivers, and finally across a sea of vengeful spirits before crossing the Bridge of Fate. Each tribulation was utterly terrifying; a moment's carelessness could have meant certain death on the journey, never to return.
Feng Que's soul accompanied him through all those trials and tribulations, so Fu Yunchen must have developed feelings for it.
However, after his soul returned to its original body, he immediately fed her the memory bead, which was tantamount to personally erasing that pure soul.
She is herself, yet she is not herself!
As for what he was really thinking, perhaps only he himself knows best.
...
After talking about Fu Yunchen, Hongmi then talked about herself.
She and Ziwu got married and adopted many children, all of whom were orphans, whom they treated as their own.
“I never imagined I could get married, let alone to such a wonderful man. I am incredibly grateful for every day I live now.” Hongmi’s smile was one of unprecedented happiness.
Mu Run was also pleased with her, and turned to look at her waist, "Your pipe is gone too."
“I’ve given it up,” Hongmi replied. “I can’t let the kids see this, so I simply gave it up.”
"That's great. I told you before, but you just wouldn't listen."
"Isn't that just getting by? By the way, sister-in-law, did you reincarnate or something?" Hongmi asked curiously. She knew that Murun's soul could be resurrected by possessing another body. However, it would only be in a recently deceased body, and it wouldn't involve possession or anything like that.
Mu Run replied, "It's reincarnation."
