Standing in the courtroom, Liu Lao Er whispered to Mu Run, "I asked someone to inform Qiao Dongzi. He should be here soon, so don't worry, sister-in-law."
Mu Run replied, "Does Qiao Dongzi have any connection with the Prefect of the Capital?"
Liu Lao Er suddenly looked sad, "It's not that he has it, it's that he'll go to the eldest brother, and the eldest brother has it."
"Will he come?" Mu Run thought of Fu Yunchen, and her heart suddenly pounded. He had told them more than once to leave the city immediately, but she wanted to buy something halfway through. And this delay was just bad luck, stepping on a landmine... If that guy knew, he would definitely be angry.
The Prefect of the Capital, still half asleep, entered the courtroom, sat down in the grand chair, and looked expressionlessly at Mu Run and Liu Lao Er standing below.
"Who are you here? What have you done? Tell me the truth!" asked the Prefect of the Capital.
Mu Run replied, “I am Fu Mu Shi. I went to Jin Gui Lou with my husband’s sworn brother Liu Er to buy jewelry. As soon as we entered, we were stopped by the shop assistants of Jin Gui Lou. They were rude and even insulted and cursed us. My husband’s brother and I were so angry that we said a few words back. Then he picked up a broom and beat me. My ears were even beaten until they bled. There were many onlookers at the time, as well as several roadside vendors selling sundries. You can send someone to investigate.”
When he spoke, he showed his injured ear to the clerk who was taking notes.
The clerk noted it down: "There is indeed an injury."
Mu Run continued, "My brother only fought back when he saw that I had been beaten. Everything I have said is true. Please investigate, Your Honor."
The advisor asked, "Fu Mushi, where are you from?"
Mu Run replied, "Xiangcheng." This was what Liu Lao Er had told her on the way to the yamen.
"Where is Xiangcheng?" the advisor continued to ask.
"North Street." North Street is a mixed bag, with all sorts of people. Local officials almost never go there to inspect, so even if they try to access household registration records, they won't find anything.
The advisor looked at the Prefect of the Capital, "Sir, what do you think?"
The Prefect of the Capital was confused again. Only after hearing the clerk's words did he raise his eyes, pick up the gavel, and slam it down on the judge's desk, producing a deafening sound.
"Bring the victim along," said the Prefect of the Capital.
The clerk took Mu Run's statement and walked over, whispering a few words to the Prefect of the Capital.
The Prefect of the Capital frowned, seemingly impatient. "Why is it him again? Go away, go away, ask him what he wants?"
"Yes." The clerk put down the statement and left in a hurry.
Mu Run and Liu Lao Er looked at each other in bewilderment.
"You didn't kill him with that kick, did you?" Mu Run asked Liu Lao Er in a low voice.
Liu Lao Er wasn't too sure either, "Judging from how arrogant and domineering he is, he probably wouldn't."
The Prefect of the Capital glanced at Mu Run and Liu Lao Er below the court, picked up Mu Run's confession, and read it through.
"What are you people doing?" asked the Prefect of the Capital.
Liu Lao Er replied, "I used to be a fisherman. My sister-in-law has only been married for a short time. She sews and mends, and takes good care of her husband and the household."
She really doesn't know how to sew or mend... Mu Run thought to herself.
"When did you arrive in the capital? What have you been doing in the capital?" The Prefect of the Capital's gaze fell on the three words written in the confession: "Buying jewelry."
Liu Lao Er said, "I came here two months ago. I'm a peasant, I do all kinds of work, I'm a handyman."
Mu Run replied, "I was still looking for work half a month ago."
"And what's this about buying jewelry?" asked the Prefect of the Capital, Mu Run.
"I want to dress up nicely, maybe that will make it easier to find work," Mu Run replied casually.
Where is your husband?
What should I say? Mu Run looked at Liu Lao Er.
Liu Lao Er said, "My eldest brother..."
"I didn't ask you, Fu Mushi, you answer?" The Prefect of the Capital stared sharply at Mu Run.
