"Which man in this manor doesn't know that the Princess Consort has a great beauty by her side? Sooner or later, the Prince will take her away. Our mistress is intolerant of such things; she'll be sent away eventually. Alright, I can't talk to you anymore; I still need to serve Her Highness." (New)
"Okay, sister, go inside quickly. I'll go check at the door to see if Madam Wei has arrived yet."
Madam Wei, the third wife, was Yan Yuelan, the second eldest daughter of Madam Yan. Two years ago, she married Wei Cheng, the third son of the Marquis of Anning.
When Xiangzhu arrived at the gate, she saw Madam Wei getting off the carriage. She hurriedly stepped forward to greet her, saying, "Madam Wei, I am honored to meet you. My princess is already waiting for you in the inner courtyard."
Madam Wei looked up at the golden plaque of Prince Sheng's Mansion. If it weren't for her parents' favoritism, the mistress of this place should be Yan Yuelan, not some third madam who didn't even have a chance to inherit the title.
"I heard there was a happy occasion at the Prince's mansion yesterday?"
Xiangzhu thought to herself, "This person really has sharp eyes and ears; he already knows about what just happened."
"Yes, there was a small but joyous occasion at the manor yesterday. Please come in, Madam."
Madam Wei glanced at her sideways, and seeing that she looked ordinary, she didn't look at her a second time. "If you are honest and dutiful, the master will not treat you badly. If you have ulterior motives, don't blame the master for not showing you any mercy."
Xiangzhu bowed and said, "This servant understands."
Upon hearing that Madam Wei had arrived, Madam Yan immediately came out of the house to greet her personally, a warm smile on her face. "Second Sister has arrived, please come in and have a seat."
Madam Wei also smiled broadly, "I just got some fresh pomegranates. I know you love them, so I brought them over for you to try."
"Thank you for your concern, sister." Madam Yan took Madam Wei's hand and walked into the house, instructing the maids not to come and serve her.
Xiangzhu stood at the door and breathed a sigh of relief.
Qitong, who was standing nearby, asked with a smile, "What's wrong?"
Xiangzhu then recounted how Madam Wei had reprimanded her, and finally whispered, "You didn't see how arrogant she was. Anyone who didn't know better would think she was a princess."
Qi Tong pulled her a little further away, saying, "You were right, this person almost became our master."
"Is that so?" Xiangzhu was unaware of the reason behind it.
Madam Wei cried, her tears falling like raindrops, a sight that evoked pity. "Sister, what kind of life am I living? Wei Cheng is a spendthrift! He was swindled out of four thousand taels of silver in business! That was borrowed from the manor. If he can't pay it back, how will our third branch of the family face us, and how will my sister face anyone in the future?"
Now that Madam Yan was in charge of the entire Prince's mansion and had plenty of money, she immediately said when she heard that her own sister was in such a predicament, "What's the big deal? I'll give it to you, sister. We can't let anyone look down on the Yan family sisters."
Madam Wei held Yan's hand, "I'll definitely pay you back when my sister has enough."
"Sister, take it. We'll talk about it later." Madam Yan called out towards the door, "Someone come here."
When Madam Wei heard that the money was available, her crying subsided considerably. "In times of crisis, only my sister can be relied upon."
Madam Yan grasped Madam Wei's hand in return and said, "What are you saying, sister? If you ever need anything from me, just let me know."
"Thank you, sister." Madam Wei wiped her eyes with a handkerchief. "Let's not talk about these upsetting things. How are you now? Has the Prince come into your room?"
Yan sighed.
