When the boat first entered the Ghost Gate Cave, there was still some reflected light on the water's surface, but gradually the light disappeared, and it became as dark as night.
Guo San'er lit the oil lamp on the boat, illuminating a small area.
"The reason why the dogwood boat travels at night is because there is a kind of fish in the river of Ghost Gate Cave that can glow. We call it the light fish or the guide fish. The boatman can travel by the light of the light fish. But the light fish does not come out during the day, so there is no dogwood boat."
Mu Run suddenly realized, "So that's the reason."
Guo San'er: "The Guangyu is quite good-looking. You can take a look if you have the chance."
Mu Run nodded. "Can we eat it?"
"..." Guo San'er laughed and said, "Of course you can eat it. I've heard that the meat is delicious and top-quality. However, we boatmen never touch it, and we will stop poachers if we see them."
"Hmm, if someone gives you directions and then you eat them, wouldn't that be retribution?" Mu Run was holding a cream puff, about to eat it... Suddenly the boat rocked, and she quickly dropped the cream puff and grabbed the gunwale.
"Please be seated firmly, sir. We're entering a bend here. Without the Light Fish to guide us, I'll have to rely on my experience, so it might be a bit bumpy."
"Okay." Mu Run gripped the gunwale tightly with both hands, and the bag of cream puffs that had been on her lap tilted, causing the cream puffs to tumble and fall into the river...
A dark shadow followed their boat. Every now and then, the shadow would surface and devour the cream puffs that had fallen onto the river.
Having sailed for many years, Guo San'er had a gut feeling that something was following his boat and that it was very dangerous. Fine beads of sweat gradually appeared on his forehead.
Mu Run felt that the boat was going faster and faster.
Looking back at Guo San'er, she noticed his face was unusually pale and asked, "What's wrong? You don't look well."
"It's alright, please sit down," Guo San'er replied.
"Maybe... we're not sitting comfortably anymore." Mu Run saw a huge black shadow following their boat from behind. "Trouble is coming."
Guo San'er glanced back discreetly, and upon seeing it, he almost dropped his paddleboard. "It's a ghost fish."
"What ghost fish?"
"Ghost Gate Cave gets its name from it. Its head is shaped like a ghost and it devours passing ships. However, it hasn't appeared for a hundred years, and everyone thought it was dead."
"Looks like we're really lucky today, we've encountered a rare fish that only comes around once in a century. What should we do?" Mu Run asked.
"Leave it to fate." Guo San'er rowed the boat with all his might.
Suddenly, Mu Run exclaimed, "Eh~!" "My... cream puff!"
She finally realized that her cream puffs had spilled into the water. And, it seemed that the mahi-mahi was eating her cream puffs!
With a thought racing through her mind, she turned her back to Guo San'er and opened the bundle, actually taking out a large bag of cream puffs from her spatial storage.
They threw them into the river one by one.
Sure enough, the ghost fish came along with her cream puff.
"..."
Guo San'er also noticed her actions, "Are you feeding the ghost fish?"
"If this way we can avoid being eaten and leave the cave safely, sacrificing a few snacks is nothing. How much further?"
“It used to take an hour, but now… less than half an hour.” With ghost-headed fish behind them, they dared not row slowly anymore.
"Okay, Guo San'er, keep it up!" Mu Run threw another handful of cream puffs into the water.
The ghostfish ate with great gusto, occasionally wagging its tail and creating ripples, even helping Guo San'er row the boat.
