"Let's find a place to rest first." Fu Yunchen looked around and pointed to an inn not far away. "That'll do."
Mu Run lightly jumped off the rock and ran towards the inn first.
Qiao Dongzi led the carriage, watching her back as she walked away. "She's been so energetic all the way here."
"Hmm." Fu Yunchen's eyes suddenly flashed as he looked at a dilapidated courtyard.
Qiao Dongzi noticed this too, but pretended not to know and continued walking forward.
Mu Run walked to the inn's door and knocked.
After a long while, a weak, elderly voice was heard, "Who is it?"
"Old man, we are merchants passing through and would like to rest here. Do you have any rooms available?"
The door creaked open.
An old man with a beard and hair in his fifties and dim eyes appeared in Mu Run's eyes. "Yes, we have empty rooms. Please come in, young lady."
"Okay, thank you, old shopkeeper." Mu Run then greeted Fu Yunchen and Qiao Dongzi.
The three entered the inn.
Looking at the dusty tables, chairs, and benches, you'd have to clean them first if you wanted to sit down and rest.
Mu Run rolled up his sleeves and got to work, wiping a rag in one hand and a broom in the other, and soon he had cleared out a table and four stools.
"Please sit down, eldest brother, and third brother as well." Mu Run casually changed the way he addressed them.
The old shopkeeper came over carrying a pot of boiling water. "We don't have any tea in the shop. This is just freshly boiled water. Please make do with this. It's free."
"Thank you, old shopkeeper. I was just thirsty. Do you know what food you have here?" Mu Run asked.
“There are still some vegetables in the kitchen. Why don’t you cook them yourself, young lady? I was packing up to go back to my hometown in the countryside to take care of my wife. I can’t take all these things with me,” the old shopkeeper said to Mu Run.
Mu Run asked in surprise, "The old shopkeeper is leaving?"
"Okay, you can stay here as you see fit. Just make sure to close the door when you leave." The old shopkeeper took out a neatly packed bundle from the counter.
Qiao Dongzi took out a few pieces of silver from his silver pouch, weighing about four or five taels. "Thank you, old shopkeeper. We can't stay for free. Please take this silver."
"That's too much," the old shopkeeper said, looking at the silver and quickly refusing.
Finally, Mu Runqiang stuffed it into his hand, saying, "Take it. It's only right to do business."
"Alright, thank you, young lady and gentlemen." The old shopkeeper put away the silver, then hesitated for a moment before saying to Mu Run, "Young lady, listen to this old man. There's no need to trade here. Don't go east after leaving the city; there are black witches there who kidnap people to make medicine. In fact, the disappearances of people in the town one by one are also related to the black witches. They look down on this half-dead old man, which is why I've been clinging to life until now."
Mu Run glanced at Fu Yunchen.
Fu Yunchen asked, "Thank you, sir. The road is difficult to travel; it's best to leave early."
"Oh, oh, take care, you three. I'll be going now." The old shopkeeper slung his bundle over his shoulder and left.
There were only Mu Run and two others in the inn.
"Hey, what do you think of me being the boss's wife?" Mu Run sat down at the counter.
Qiao Dongzi: "Then who's the boss?"
“Him.” Mu Run pointed at Fu Yunchen.
Fu Yunchen: "...Go to the kitchen and cook."
Mu Run curled her lip and walked towards the kitchen.
Qiao Dongzi walked to the door and looked around. He saw two furtive figures loitering near the inn.
"The boss has been targeted."
"Perfect, saves me the trouble of going to them."
Mu Run went into the kitchen.
The walls were mottled and yellowed from smoke. A bamboo basket hung from the roof beam, containing two pieces of cured meat and some dried vegetables. There was still a little rice left in the rice jar, enough for a bowl of porridge. Two dark, unremarkable wild yams and some vegetable scraps lay on the ground, and the water jar in the corner was half full of clean water.
"Okay, let's get started." Mu Run washed her hands, picked up the kitchen knife, and began cooking.
Fu Yunchen and Qiao Dongzi discussed their next plan.
Suddenly, the aroma of food wafted from the kitchen.
Qiao Dongzi was incredibly surprised. "This girl really knows how to cook? I'll go take a look."
I got up and went to the kitchen.
Fu Yunchen sat motionless on the stool, letting the fragrance in the air slowly overlap with the fragrance in his memory...
