The students sitting by the window whispered among themselves, gossiping:
"It's a girl, and quite pretty. Is she here to confess her feelings again?"
"Oh my god, she's totally my type! Why do I feel like I've never seen her before?"
A female student with pigtails exclaimed excitedly, but with a hint of doubt. Could she be a new transfer student?
The male classmate who had spoken up to help call for help earlier sat down with a slightly flushed face, his eyes still unable to resist glancing towards the back door.
The girl standing there wore a loose, ordinary blue and white school uniform. Her back was straight, and her long, fair neck was exposed at the neckline. She waited quietly in place, like a graceful little white flower.
Xie Jingcheng stood up, pushed the chair blocking his way toward the desk, and strode to the door, almost stepping over the threshold.
He didn't speak, but his slightly lowered phoenix eyes clearly showed a questioning look.
Upon seeing him approach, the girl who had been waiting quietly brightened her bright eyes slightly, her dark eyes curving upwards, the delicate corners of her eyes drooping, making her appear charming and touching.
She smiled gently: "Hello, classmate Xie. I apologize for bothering you. I wonder if you still remember me. My name is Yu Ning."
As soon as the sound fell, the onlookers who had been waiting by the window were thrown into a frenzy, letting out gasps that they tried to suppress.
"She's Yu Ning??"
"That girl who knocked out the class monitor and was in the top ten of the grade? Holy crap, she's not only a top student, but she's also so beautiful, she's almost as pretty as our class beauty."
The girl who was talking about Yu Ning sitting behind her during a certain monthly exam was nudged by the person next to her with an elbow: "Is this the one you described as plain-looking and gloomy?"
The girl retorted hesitantly, "I didn't say she was ugly... I just said I couldn't see her face clearly..."
The calmest and most composed person in the room was Xie Jingcheng.
Because in his memory, there was no such person as Yu Ning.
The boy in front of her was very tall. Yu Ning tilted her head slightly and saw a hint of bitterness flash across his indifferent eyes. It was so quick that it was like a fleeting moment, but it was enough to catch the eye of anyone who saw it.
She then smiled naturally: "Thank you for saving me from those people. I just slipped and fell when I went downstairs, so I didn't have time to thank you."
She paused, then lowered her voice slightly: "And I'm very sorry for the trouble that the rumors that started because of me caused you."
When she mentioned saving people, Xie Jingcheng finally had a faint impression. A girl with thick bangs, looking down and cowering in the corner flashed through his mind, a stark contrast to the confident look in front of him.
Xie Jingcheng was just passing by and helped out casually, and didn't take it to heart... No, actually he did take it to heart to some extent, because he later went to the police station because of it.
Xie Jingcheng gave a succinct "Mmm," his calm phoenix eyes revealing five unspoken words—
Is there anything else?
Yu Ning's gentle smile froze for a moment.
She looked at Xie Jingcheng, who had given her a single word with a blank expression, and inwardly screamed in despair.
Hmm? Hmm? Hmm? ?
You think a simple "hmm" is enough?
Aren't you the school bully? The arrogant, reckless school bully from those novels! I've laid so much groundwork, and you just give me a "hmm" and call me a day?
At this point, you should disdainfully say, "Is just saying thank you enough? Shouldn't you give me some kind of gift or compensation?" Then I should act flustered and firmly refuse unreasonable demands to showcase the resilient and unyielding spirit of a modern-day innocent and naive heroine! Shouldn't the plot of a novel be like this?!
What a waste of my amazing acting skills just now!
A cold, mechanical voice rang out in a sarcastic tone:
[Host, your acting just now only reached the passing grade according to the program; it was far from being superb.]
[Shut up! One more word and I'll send you to your grave!]
Yu Ning's inner turmoil erupted like a volcano, but to outsiders, she only seemed stunned for a moment before suddenly remembering what she was holding. She raised her hands, and a simple gift bag appeared between the two of them.
"This is a wristband I sewed myself. Thank you for your help last time." The girl smiled sweetly, and many of the boys who were watching the commotion blushed secretly.
Xie Jingcheng did not lower his head, his voice calm: "No need."
"Well... okay then."
Yu Ning remained completely unmoved.
It's good that you didn't accept it. If you find out later that it's just a cheap, generic wristband with the label cut off and the logo removed, it'll be harder to clean up the mess.
Luckily, she bought it cheaply and didn't lose much money.
The girl reluctantly withdrew her hand, but stopped Xie Jingcheng just as he was about to turn around, asking softly, "By the way, I remember you hurt your hand last time, is it better now?"
Along with her voice came her fingers, which she stretched out in a moment of panic.
However, Xie Jingcheng immediately avoided her gaze with a frown, his sharp eyebrows lowered as he gave her a cold look, "It's already been bandaged."
When the word "bandage" was mentioned, his slightly clenched fingers twitched slightly, but his cold and sharp eyes remained completely unmoved.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to, it was just a subconscious reaction..." Yu Ning waved her hand hastily, a faint blush of embarrassment spreading across her fair cheeks. She smiled and said, "Well, it's been more than two months, it should be healed by now."
She glanced at it and, seeing no scars, breathed a sigh of relief and smiled, "Looks like it was handled very well back then."
Just when everyone thought there would be no further response, Xie Jingcheng paused for a moment, then said, "Hmm."
Yu Ning paused for a moment, then smiled and said, "Class is about to start, so I'll be going now. Goodbye, Xie."
She lowered her slender neck slightly, gave a shallow bow, and then jogged away, as if she were really in a hurry to get back to class.
What a joke! Didn't you see Xie Jingcheng was about to turn back? If she's so clueless and keeps trying to chat, she'll be left standing at the door, which would be embarrassing and damage her image.
But she heard the questioning voices of a group of students watching behind her: "Isn't it a long break now? There's no class going on."
Yu Ning paused for a moment while jogging: "..."
Damn it... she forgot!!!
