Chapter 347 One Wave Subsides, Another Rises

However, passersby usually only glanced at it before immediately looking away.

There are so many lonely and disheartened people in this city.

Because of the rising body temperature from brisk walking, combined with the oncoming breeze, the damp fabric clung to Yu Ning's skin, creating an uncomfortable sticky feeling.

For tonight's banquet, the bandage that had been tied around the tiger's mouth was torn off because of appearance concerns.

Now, the wound, soaked in water, is white and swollen, and the pain is so intense that the hand twitches slightly uncontrollably. Yet, Yu Ning stares at it for a long time, her expression calm as if it weren't her own flesh and blood.

A moment later, she moved her other hand, trying to take out another band-aid from her bag.

But the outstretched hand paused for a second before falling back to its original position.

Everyone waiting at the bus stop noticed a girl who looked like she had just been pulled from the water, who suddenly turned around and left without saying a word.

The passerby who had been watching Yu Ning's shadow for a long time secretly breathed a sigh of relief.

Thank goodness, he said it's not too late now.

In her mind, 050 mercilessly mocked her, telling her that she had disobeyed her and obediently completed the task, only to end up in such a miserable state.

But after mocking her, 050 noticed that Yu Ning, who was usually argumentative, was surprisingly silent. After a moment of awkward silence, she snorted and disappeared into a corner of her mind, no longer speaking.

Watching the pale-faced human girl purse her lips and slowly climb the stairs, stepping on her shadow, Yu Ning reached her front door. Her breath trembled as she loosened her grip on the handrail.

Under the intermittently lit corridor lights, her hand holding the keys paused.

Yu Ning's dark, unwavering pupils stared calmly at the doormat—covered with crooked, gray footprints.

She closed her eyes and took a deep breath, her chapped lips bleeding.

I'd rather the world just end; I really don't want to do this anymore.

The hallway lights, which had been malfunctioning due to the prolonged silence, once again plunged into darkness, until the long-silent girl, holding a key, inserted it into the slit, and the metallic clanging sound awakened the lights.

As soon as the door opened, an impatient voice came from inside.

"You're back so late, where have you been gallivanting around?"

Yu Ning weighed the schoolbag in her hand, did not respond to the man's words, and calmly closed the door behind her.

The man who had just spoken, the original owner's father, emerged from the bedroom with a furrowed brow and a very gloomy expression.

"Why didn't you say anything after I asked you for so long? Are you mute?"

The unshaven man didn't even glance at the girl in front of the door. After coming out of the room, he went straight to the sofa and sat down. Only while pouring a beer did he glance in the direction of the door.

The man didn't care at all why his daughter came back in such a disheveled state; instead, he kept focusing on the time Yu Ningwan came home.

As Yu's father tilted his head back to drink, he glanced at her casually and said sarcastically, "You won't be like your mother, running off with some random man, will you?"

The original owner's mother was clearly a legitimate woman who remarried through a legitimate blind date after her divorce, unlike the despicable claims made by this man.

After finishing his beer, the man realized that Yu Ning hadn't said a word the whole time, and that he felt like a clown performing a one-man show. He immediately slammed the glass down on the table with a loud "thud!"

"I'm asking you a question! You don't respect your father anymore, do you?!" he demanded angrily.

Since the question had been asked so bluntly, Yu Ning casually bent down to take off her shoes, making one last effort to maintain her public image, and softly replied, "Internal competition training."

They made no mention of her part-time job.

Upon hearing this, Yu's father's gloomy expression softened slightly. He poured himself another glass of beer and smacked his lips, exhaling the foam on the top layer: "Do well on the exam and bring back that bonus, otherwise it's just a waste of time."

After changing into slippers, Yu Ning leaned against the wall to get up, her gaze sweeping over the messy living room before looking into the house.

The man just came out of her bedroom.

From the doorway, the floor in one corner of the room was littered with various daily necessities, as if a robber had ransacked the place.

It took her two whole nights to tidy up the house.

Yu Ning's drooping hand clenched into a fist without making a sound.

Mr. Yu noticed her looking around, but he didn't care at all. He even leaned back shamelessly and put on an elder's air as he looked at her: "You've been working these days, right? Where's the money? Your boss won't withhold your wages just because you're young, will he?"

However, it was unexpected.

"I didn't go to work because my hand was injured."

Yu Ning answered with her head down.

The man who was holding out his hand to pay immediately changed his expression upon hearing this, but not because Yu Ning was injured. He sat up straight and pressed on aggressively: "You're not working anymore? What about the living expenses your mother sent you before? I remember you saved them. Where did you put them?"

Even 050 couldn't help but curse in disgust, "That old bastard is shameless!"

Having run out of pretense, Yu Ning turned her head to look at him, and chuckled as if she had heard a joke: "Didn't you already take all that money?"

Don't you have any self-awareness? How dare you ask me?

A clear look of embarrassment flashed across Yu's father's face. He was usually quick to use money and hadn't kept such detailed records. As if to cover up his awkwardness, he shouted, "And what happened after that? She never gave you any more money?!"

The facts are indeed quite similar.

At the beginning of this year, after the Spring Festival, the original owner's biological mother secretly contacted her, gave her one last thousand yuan, and then said with remorse that she was moving to another city to avoid Yu Ning's father coming to her door, and that they should never contact each other again.

The original owner agreed at the time and did not pester or try to keep him.

Shortly afterward, he fell down the stairs.
